"Brothers and Sisters I have a story for you," announced a skinny man in a white collared shirt. He then relayed to us a tale of a magic man on Hollywood Blvd. who gave him magic coins that got him so high he saw Jesus. He then denounced Jesus and said that the next band would be even better than the son of God, which is a pretty tough introduction to live up to. I'm sure that had electric guitars been around when Jesus walked the earth, he would have been freakishly good at it.

Tonight, as always, local multi-instrumentalist/producer extraordinaire Jon Brion (LAist Interview, #2, Review) will be jamming with friends at the Largo at the Coronet. San Francisco-based singer-songwriter Ben Kweller will be headlining the El Rey Theatre with LAist favorites Local Natives (LAist Review). English/German indie rockers Art Brut are poised to conclude a three night stint at Spaceland with the Blood Arm (LAist Interview) in tow. And, lastly, San Franciscan indie rockers Lovelikefire will be gracing the Bootleg Theatre. But we strongly suggest doing whatever it takes to get into the Wiltern to catch Brooklyn-based indie rockers Grizzly Bear. Fellow Brooklynites Here We Go Magic are slated to kick things off.
"I like all the girls, and all the girls like me!" A cocky line to be sure, but also one that will stick in your brain for days on end. The same can be said about the rest of The Blood Arm's second album, Lie Lover Lie, whose New Wave infused Los Angeles rock grabbed the world's attention three years ago. They're back in their LA studio, wrapping up material on their third disk. They will be debuting these new tunes at the Bordello this Thursday evening. Keeping us up to date on the latest developments lead singer, Nathaniel Fregoso was kind enough to speak to us from the Grilled Cheese Invitational on Saturday. Here is some of what was said.
Tonight LA has its fair share of NYE options. French Rumba Flamenca outfit the Gipsy Kings are slated to headline the newly renovated Conga Room (LAist Review). Long Beach-bred rapper Snoop Dogg is poised to flow at the House of Blues Sunset. Legendary alternative rockers Stone Temple Pilots will be performing at Club Nokia in Downtown. Showtune maestros Pink Martini are gearing up for two gigs, one early, one late, at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. Bob Marley's backing band the Wailers will be jamming at the Roxy. Santa Barbara-based folk rockers Toad the Wet Sprocket will be rocking out at the Canyon Club. Israeli trance outfit Infected Mushroom are set to headline the Hollywood Palladium. Little Radio will be throwing a NYE extravaganza at the Bank with Ariel Pink, Crystal Antlers, Restavrant and Port O'Brien. And, lastly, local indie rockers the Henry Clay People and the Happy Hollows will be coming through Spaceland. But from the bevy of options we strongly suggest heading over to the Echo to party with the Blood Arm. The rollicking quartet will surely kick the New Year off with a bang.

A couple hundred bodies packed Silverlake's Spaceland on Friday night to the "secret", pre-Sunset Junction show by the classic punk band Buzzcocks. The band may have started off with "Boredom" but beer didn't get spilled and bodies didn't start going crazy until "Autonomy" threw the crowd into a frenzy -- at least in the front -- where I got properly shoved and blessed with beer from plenty of enthused fans.
Everyone loves an outlaw and David Allen Coe is as bad as they get. Practically born in prison, Coe has been slinging around racial epithets and dirty songs before it became trendy. And thanks to Red Peters and the fact that he can't be fined, Howard Stern has been playing one of Coe's classics "Fuckin in the Butt". Beneficiary of an opening spot from a recent Kid Rock tour, DAC is showing a new...
