Elvis Costello @ Greek Theater 8/18/09

Elvis Costello’s not shy when it comes to genre-hopping. Folks who are only interested his “straight” rock and roll incarnation as leader of the Attractions/ Imposters (same difference give or take a bass player) need to do a little research before shelling out for tickets, to make sure they don’t end up on the wrong end of a jazz orchestra or an acapella choir. Those people may have opted out of this most recent trip fronting the Sugarcanes, a crew of traditional bluegrass musicians, each one a celebrated player in his own right. But the loss is their own. While the drumset-free, accordion-rich stage setup might have looked a little odd, there was no mistaking who the dude at the mic was.

Tonight In Rock: Chris Cornell, T-Bone Burnett, Joe Lally, Maria Taylor

Tonight Soundgarden front man Chris Cornell will be headlining the Wiltern. Fort Worth-bred songwriter, musician and producer T-Bone Burnett is poised to perform for a sold-out crowd at McCabe's Guitar Shop. And, lastly, Fugazi bassist Joe Lally will be gracing the Echo for this week's edition of Part Time Punks. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Troubadour to catch Birmingham-bred folk songstress Maria Taylor (LAist Interview). LAist favorites Whispertown 2000 (LAist Interview, Review, #2) are slated to kick things off.

Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin) and Alison Krauss (Union Station), whose critically-lauded, Gold album 'Raising Sand' continues to be a top-seller worldwide, play two shows at The Greek Theatre on Monday, June 23 and Tuesday, June 24 (you can buy tickets here: 6/23 | 6/24).
