Photo by kristi.nicole via the LAist Featured Photos pool on Flickr One week after being subdued in his cell with a taser gun and lapsing into a coma, 35-year-old Orange County inmate Jason Jesus Gomez has died, officials announced today. Gomez, who was in jail for a probation violation, stopped breathing after officers used the taser on him during a scuffle. Say cheese: LA City Council voted today to approve a contract that will put......

Shock the monkey indeed! One of the weirdest hybrid-electronics to come out of the CES is a personal tasing device -- that also doubles as a 1-gig MP3 player! So useful for those morning jogs, when you're fending off rowdy UCLA students and working out with the new Chromeo record! The MP3 player is actually a separate holster that you fit your taser into -- the whole thing fits comfortably into a pocket or......

Since 2001, about 230 people have died in the U.S. after being shocked with a Taser. One of the most recent incidents was in an unincorporated part of South LA last Friday night when a 32-year-old man died after being shocked twice by LA County Sheriffs. Apparently, Cesar Silver was under drugs or alcohol and fought and struggled with five sheriffs before the Taser gun was brought out. "Eyewitnesses indicated there was a real struggle.......

We know the UCLA taser fiasco didn't start the taser party, but some wacky kids have remixed the audio from the "don't tase me, bro" guy with your favorite MC Hammer track. It made us smile for some devious reason. Hopefully you'll get the same reaction. To us it was just a lighthearted end of a taser-happy week that included an OC cop tasering an autistic child. Dark humor, but humor nonetheless.......

I try to avoid rants here, but some of the cavalier responses to the recent taser stories have made me feel like I need to go above and beyond a simple comment. Accusations were made that the agonized screams of people being tasered were just the person being "dramatic". One commentor actually said, "Torture?" LOL! LOL? Are you kidding me? Try getting tasered LOL! Of the three recent incidents, there is not a single......

Taylor Karras was reported missing by his mother yesterday, after running away from a Westminster social services facility where he was receiving therapy for autism. Around 9:30 p.m., the 15-year-old boy was found just a block from his North Tustin home. Orange County Sheriff's deputies spotted Karras pushing a shopping cart in the street, chased him on foot, Tasered him once, and handcuffed him. Only when a passing neighbor recognized Karras did the authorities......

There are a million reasons LA is better than Gainesville, but both are home to major state universities with their own Taser-happy police forces. Earlier today, 21-year-old Florida student Andrew Meyer was apprehended by police and stunned with a Taser gun at a town hall meeting with Senator John Kerry on the UF campus. It seems he was tailed by the police as he came to ask the question -- challenging Kerry for not......

The UCLA police department identified the officer caught electrifying the student who did not produce his college ID card as Terrence Duren, an 18-year veteran of the UCPD. Duren hasn't had the smoothest career in law enforcement. He came to Westwood after being fired from the infamous Long Beach PD. A few years after being hired by UCLA he was accused of using his nightstick to choke a fratboy and the university asked the......

As you might have seen, LAist has been all over this UCLA taser incident. We showed you the disturbing video as soon as it appeared on YouTube, we gave you the administration's response, we let you know how other blogs viewed it, we let you know how other California colleges thought about it, we even had a staffer stoke you a photo essay of the protest that we feel is better than the LA......

UCLA is policed by the UCPD who follow this taser policy: 301.24 PAIN COMPLIANCE TECHNIQUES (Metroblogging LA) "We are Big Brother. Not the government or the police; American society - LOS ANGELES - is Big Brother. And to that, I say: so be it." (LACityNerd) "The acting Chancellor of UCLA, Norman Abrams, an expert in anti-terrorist law, has, in a statement issued by the University, gone a long way towards justifying the repeated tasering......

It’s beginning to feel a lot like a UC again on campus. For the first time in years, UCLA students threw down their books and returned to their activist roots by staging a major demonstration this afternoon. Students have been shocked and frustrated by the recent tasering of a UCLA student by UCPD officers at the student library, and it has grown to the point where many are feeling the need to voice their......

The reaction across campus to Tuesday night's tasering of a student by UCPD officers is one of shock and disgust. Many question how tasering is appropriate force against someone who fails to even threaten to strike an officer. "I realize when looking at these kind of arrest tapes that they don't always show the full picture. ... But that six minutes that we can watch just seems like it's a ridiculous amount of force......

On Tuesday night around 11pm, Mostafa Tabatabainejad, a UCLA student, was stunned several times with a Taser after he wasn't able to produce his anti-Taser device (his Bruin card) and did not leave the CLICC Lab in Powell Library in a timely manner, the Daily Bruin reports. The video appears to show that the shocking continued while Tabatabainejad was handcuffed. As Tabatabainejad was being dragged through the room by two officers, he repeated in......
