A standoff that began at around 10:40 last night ended just before 6 this morning outside an apartment building in North Hollywood where a man who'd been believed to have shot his wife was holed up. LAPD officers and members of the SWAT team and bomb squad units were "met by neighbor Nick Wilcox, who told them some bullets came through his apartment wall," at the building on the 6500 block of Simpson Avenue, according to KTLA.

     

Joe Moshe, reportedly the suspect involved in yesterday's all-day standoff in Westwood, had called 911 on Wednesday "threatening to blow the White House," the LAPD explained in a statement released last night.

Since this morning, police have been in a standoff with a pursuit suspect wanted on a warrant, reportedly over threats to the White House and possibly other charges. The chase began in Westchester around 10 a.m., heading north on the 405 freeway before entering the Westwood neighborhood when the car entered the driveway of the Federal Building at Wilshire and Veteran. Once there, police blocked him in and he has been refusing to leave the car since Veteran Avenue is closed down near Wilshire and a nearby apartment building was evacuated as a precautionary measure. The bomb squad was called out earlier and at 1:45 p.m., the SWAT Team from downtown was deployed to the scene, according to the LAPD. An armored personal vehicle, which is used when a suspect may have heavier weaponry, was also deployed to the front of the car. UPDATE, 5 p.m.: Standoff still ongoing, suspect possibly identified. UPDATE, 7:45 p.m.: The suspect has been arrested.

A possible arson suspect has barricaded himself somewhere on the 5400 block of Russell Avenue, near the intersection of Hollywood and Western, according to the LAPD. Not many details are available, but police believe he may have a weapon. A good number of police and fire have responded to the situation that is currently ongoing.

A bizarre standoff took place overnight at a home in Arcadia located in the 1700 block of Mayflower Ave. as local authorities responded to a 911 call regarding an armed suspect who had allegedly barricaded himself in the house with hostages. The caller identified himself as someone who had fled the home, according to cbs2. "Arcadia police Captain Gene Gioia said previously a police SWAT team and sheriff's negotiators have been trying for hours without success Monday to communicate with the man."

   

"The reason appears to be anti-war, but I don't know the specifics," Sgt. Lorenzo Duarte. Duarte said of the masked gunman that stopped 101 Freeway traffic for hours starting this morning around 7:10 a.m.

An 11-hour standoff between a man and Pasadena SWAT ended early this morning when the man, who was injured with two gunshot wounds by police at some point during the situation, surrendered himself. Carlos Artivia, 45, was holding his 9-year-old son inside on the 1500 block of North El Molino Avenue. On Sunday evening, LA County SWAT killed a man who shot and injured his wife and was holding his 2-year-old daughter hostage inside his Lynwood home.

A hostage situation led to the death of a suspect in Lynwood, a suburb just south of Los Angeles, last night. Around 9:00 p.m., sheriff's deputies responded to a call and found the wife of the suspect shot and wounded outside of her house. Inside, her husband had taken their 2-year-old daughter hostage. At 11:30 p.m., SWAT entered the household, shot and killed the man and rescued the daughter who was unharmed, according to the Associated Press.

A week ago Wednesday, LAPD's Special Weapons And Tactics Team responded to an incident where a Edward Kaddis, 61, had earlier shot and killed his brother, William Kaddis, 64, according to a statement by the LAPD today.

Yesterday afternoon, LAPD SWAT stormed a house in Reseda believed to be where a 24-year-old man was being held for ransom. The man was rescued with non life-threatening injuries and seven men and one woman were arrested at the home on 18300 block of Schoolcraft Street near Etiwanda Avenue.

• For those who thought oil spills only happened when big tankers in Alaska collided with icebergs, may I point you to the South Bay? Crews were busy Saturday cleaning up about 5,500 gallons of oil that spilled into the wetlands area around Machado Lake. The oil apparently overflowed from an oil-and-water separator at the Cooper & Brain Oil Co. field near PCH at the 110 Freeway. You might remember Machado Lake as the former home of Reggie, the beloved alligator who now lives at the zoo. Good thing, because I've never heard of a black alligator before.
• A mysterious crash in Sherman Oaks early Saturday left one person dead that CHP officials said might have been a burglar being chased by the people whose homes he allegedly robbed. The motorist died when he skidded into a concrete wall on the Sepulveda Boulevard offramp after being chased by the CHP. Four others were hurt.
• For the first time in its history, the SWAT training unit has accepted a woman into its program. Jennifer Grasso, 36, is one of 13 officers selected for the department's 12-week training school, which starts Monday. Congratulations, Grasso. Just remember what Tom Hanks advised another female who was competing in a man's world: there's no crying in SWAT school.
• According to Paid Content, pop culture-focused social media site Buzznet has acquired indie-music blog Stereogum for $5 million. What this means for the future of Stereogum is unclear, but its owners are reportedly staying on to run the site. Now that's what I call indie.
• A change for Disneyland's It's a Small World ride are reportedly in the works. Disney apparently plans to add its name-brand characters to the anonymous cast that currently populates the ride. It has caused a huge uproar among the original artist's family. There is something so poetic about controversy at the so called Happiest Place on Earth.
• Jazz lovers in Long Beach are praising a judge's decision to open the Backstage jazz and blues supper club. An apartment owner had sought an injunction to halt construction, saying the music would force tenants to move. Noise studies did not bore out the owner's claims as the judge kind of blue jazz owners away with his decision.
• Add cantaloupe's to the list of food items being recalled. On Friday, Dole asked consumers not to buy or eat their beige melons picked in Honduras for fear that they were contaminated with salmonella.
• Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz said he will not pay his California baristas more than $100 million in tips a San Diego judge said is owed to them after several employees sued the company. Schultz said there is no money to be refunded from the tips that are usually shared with shift supervisors. Last year, Starbucks was named the 16th best company to work for. Hundreds of disgruntled employees might disagree.

• 45-year-old murder suspect Hovik "John" Mankyan, who engaged police in a lengthy standoff on Good Friday in Palmdale, is reportedly "clinging to life" in the hospital. Mankyan, who is wanted for a 2004 North Hollywood homicide "ingested poison and severed arteries" prior to surrendering.
• Honors on Ice: The Anaheim Ducks will honor SWAT officer Randal Simmons, who died in the line of duty, with a moment of silence before tonight's matchup with the Kings. James Veenstra, the officer who survived the violent standoff, will throw out the first puck.

• So punk rock: 52-year-old Rocco Bannich (aka Rocco Roll of 70s band The Absentees) was sentenced 55-to-life yesterday for shooting at three Long Beach SWAT officers. The maximum sentence was imposed because of his "complete lack of remorse."

10,500 people packed into the Crenshaw Christian Faith Dome this morning for a very special service for fallen LAPD SWAT Officer Randal Simmons. Police officers from as far as Canada have come to Los Angeles to honor him. More waited outside and people began to gather on the streets along the procession route.

I wouldn't normally encourage anybody to go out and gorge on a Whopper, but today, the Burger King downtown at Cesar Chavez and Grand Avenue is donating 100% of its sales to the family of SWAT officer Randal Simmons, who was killed last week in a deadly shoot-out in Winnetka. The fundraiser will be running all day today, until midnight tonight.
