Have you had enough of $5 coffee? $99 burgers? $125 martinis? I know I am -- doesn't anybody in this city want to find the cheapest drinks, meals, and booze? Los Angeles Magazine comes through this month with a feature on great deals and bargain finds on everything from martinis to furniture to underpants. We went straight for the food section, of course -- and here are our top food bargain picks from the February issue. What are your picks for best foodie bargains in the city?
LA Mag's Bargain Foodie Picks
A Taste for the Traditional: Sushi Gen
We have a list about a mile long of sushi restaurants in Los Angeles that we want to hit up, and thankfully a gaggle of gal-pals who are game to try new places. Recently we rounded up the troops for a taste test-drive at Little Tokyo's Sushi Gen. We'd done just a tad of research--mainly noting that just about everyone had something positive to say about the high-quality of fish served at this popular, moderately priced sushi joint, including the LA Times, who listed Sushi Gen earlier this year in their feature on Advanced Sushi. Our visit was at lunch time, and even though it was barely noon, the wait was about twenty minutes for a table for four. Had it been less crowded, or fewer of us dining, we would have eagerly opted for the sushi bar. But a table it was to be, and so we sat down and dove into the menu.
LA Mag's Gone Fishin' for the City's Best Sushi
We're beginning to feel a deep kinship with the food folks over at Los Angeles Magazine. Recently they've raised our eyebrows with the "Best of L.A." issue, and before that it was their "Cheap Eats" feature that got our tongues wagging. Now they've gone so near and dear to our heart that we can't help but mention it here. In their September issue, LA Mag is talking sushi-- and if there's anything we love to eat, it's sushi. Writer Patric Kuh shares his own list of the 15 best sushi spots in the city, but he reminds us that it's "not the ultimate list--that list is yours." So we don't feel so bad that we've only tried one spot on his list. We do feel better knowing that Kuh endorses some places like Tama, Sushi Ike, Sushi Tenn, and Sushi Gen that we've been wanting to try, and for giving us even more places to get to. (By the way, does anyone want to contribute to the "Send an LAist to Urasawa" fund? It's only $250 a seat!) So what's on LA Mag's list, you ask?
Food News: Bargains and Tributes at the Times
Today's LA Times online has a great foodie feature called 20 Delicious Deals that lists a variety of spots around town where you can do some good eating for great prices. Unlike the earlier Los Angeles mag piece on 25 under $25, the Times didn't set a price cap, or aim to have full meals at all their spots, but instead selected outstanding single menu items, like a Pain au chocolat at Pacific Palisades' À la Tarte for $2.75 or an asada taco in Studio City at Tortas Mexico for the bargain price of $2.10. They also have some higher end choices and complete meals, of which we've spied a couple spots we'd like to try, like the $10.50 Sashimi lunch special at Sushi Gen, or the Sunday night three course supper at the elegant and popular Lucques, which runs $35 per person. Delicious, indeed!
