Get Out: Spike Jonze Book Signing, National Bundt Day, Italian Cinema, Japanese Food Festival

Fans of Where the Wild Things Are and Spike Jonze will want to head to FAMILY at 5 this evening as the famed director signs copies of his book Heads On & We Shoot: The Making Of Where The Wild Things Are. About the book, via FAMILY's website: "The book design is heavily image-based, a mix of early sketches, storyboards, character designs, and extensive behind-the-scenes photographs that show both incredible live-action puppetry and computer animation. The text includes forewords by Jonze and Eggers, interviews with the cast and crew, stories from on and off the set, and early drafts of the screenplay."

The Berlin wall was toppled on November 9th, 1989. To commemorate this landmark event, the Wall Project has had several segments of the wall erected on Wilshire Boulevard across the street from LACMA, and local artists, like renowned muralist Kent Twitchell, have contributed art to the panels. Today panels will be erected enough to fully block Wilshire, there will be an evening of activities and entertainment, and at midnight the wall will be toppled, marking the anniversary, which will be broadcast live on German television.

Head down to Olvera Street this evening to see the first night of nine that is the celebration of Dia de Los Muertos. See how the tradition of celebrating and honoring the lives of the dead is carried out in colorful displays. On the plaza you can experience face painting, street theater performances, strolling mariachi bands, Aztec dancers, puppets, ballet folklorico and other fun family activities. Dia De Los Muertos community altars will also be on display in the plaza and in the various shops on Olvera Street. Tonight, and every night through November 2, you can see a candlelight procession at 7 p.m.

              

If you overdid it last night, head over to Rush Street in Culver City for their new brunch menu. If you are looking for the hair of the dog, they have you covered with a bottomless mimosa, a make-your-own Bloody Mary bar and anything else you can imagine. Meet the makers, taste until you're full, and shop a little for your holiday gift lists (and that secret stash of chocolate we know you keep). Although LAist is skipping the sweetness this year, we've had a tasty time there in the past.

The Port of Los Angeles LobsterFest wraps up today from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Ports O'Call Village (1190 Nagoya Way, San Pedro). The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and the FIDM Museum present a show called "The Outstanding Art of Television Costume Design." This 4th annual exhibit puts visitors close up to the costumes that bring favorite small screen characters to life. See over 100 costumes, props and sketches from popular television shows of 2008-2009, including this year’s Emmy nominated designs. The show is free and open to the public today, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., but today is closing day, so don't miss out!

The Black Box Theater presents The Conversation tonight at 5 pm. Diana, a teenage runaway discovers she may have stumbled into a web of deceit and fraud at her safehouse -- a residence for women run by nuns. The play is based on a life-altering fragment of conversation overheard by author Alpha Blair as a teen runaway in NYC. Tickets are $15.

With this in mind, the festival will be implementing more initiatives to make our show zero-waste as well as environmentally and socially sustainable. Spend you Sunday celebrating Earth Day and our oceans at Heal the Bay’s Santa Monica Pier Aquarium, where today from 11-6 they will have displays, presentations and activities focusing on environmental issues for which Heal the Bay is advocating will give visitors a range of areas for involvement. If you want to help pitch in, you can sign up for a beach cleanup between noon-3:30 and gain free admission to the museum for your participation. Special exhibits inside the Aquarium will highlight the environmental problems of marine debris. Artist “Deb Ris,” will display samples of her work, composed of trash found in the marine environment, along with many more special presentations and opportunities to interact with marine life. Lots of other kid-friendly activities, too.

LA Marathon Suffering with New Date, Council Motion Seeks to Bring Back Sunday Option

A motion introduced by three City Councilmembers today will lift a ban that forced the Los Angeles Marathon this year to be held on a Monday holiday instead of a Sunday to avoid conflicts with religious groups. With not many choices at hand, Marathon organizers went with Memorial Day, which predictably proved difficult with low participation, limited broadcast availability and complaints from runners.
