I recently finished reading Michael Pollan's "In Defense of Food", and I couldn't wait to get out to the Studio City farmer's market this morning. I stuck a couple of twenty-dollar bills in my back pocket and threw a "Ventura County Fair!!!" tote bag over my arm.

We've heard it all before: eat more fruits and veggies. Incorporate more leafy greens into your diet. Veggies should make up 50% of your dinner plate. Keep apples and oranges around as snacks instead of potato chips and cookies. Blah blah green blah healthy blah vitamins blah. So you make up your shopping list, head to your local grocery store, and stock up. You figure you'll save a lot of money by cooking up your own meals using all this great produce, rather than gorging on those frozen/pre-packaged/canned meals. Right?

It's certainly not the biggest farmer's market around--in fact it's pretty close to fledgling. Operational since last fall, the Toluca Lake Certified Farmer's Market takes over just one tiny block on Sancola, north of Riverside Drive. There are a few produce stands featuring excellent, although somewhat limited, selections of fresh local fruits and veggies, as well as at least one floral stand, craftsmakers with wares from soy candles to jewelry, tamales, baked goods, and...

Okay, so that picture is from a Kaiser Permanente commercial. It's nice to dream though. As a resident of Sherman Oaks near the Ventura corridor, it is so often that I wish the bike path along the LA River would be finished. Once on the bike path, a trip to the Sherman Oaks Galleria or to the Studio City Farmer's Market would be a cinch. Daily trips for amenities such as groceries and office...
