The St. Patrick's Day Guide to Guides

Hopefully, you've chimed in on our map of pubs in the Los Angeles area. In any case, every business is yearning to take your green in exchange for green on this happy day of Shamrock Shakes and the such. If you're staying in, The Rundown has a great list of store-bought beers you can find at Whole Foods and BevMo curated by LA-based "beer expert" and author Hallie Beaune. Over at the LA Times, Charlie Amter rounds up the irish pubs and where the holiday themed drink specials can be found (even non Irish bars like Liquid Kitty are getting on the game, and maybe it's a good idea to check them out, they'll be less crowded). The Scene also has a list and over at LA.com, they offer a handful of their picks.

Eat Me! I'm Irish!

This post is in no way meant to malign corned beef and cabbage, which is actually really good when made properly. But it's always nice to try something new. Last year the Beef Braised in Guinness went over well. This year we are here to bring you even more Irishy goodness.

The Return of the Guinness Cupcake

No one really likes green beer or Shamrock Shakes. And corned beef and cabbage is iffy at best.

It's hard to compete with St. Patrick's Day, something Jason Collett can testify to as he played to a thin crowd numbering in the few dozen at the Troubadour. It seemed the allure of corned beef and Guinness was just too much.

What was just a St. Patty's Day bar fight that included a pool cue knocking one man unconscious has turned into a murder incident. As of yesterday, the Monday afternoon fight in a bar in Orange County's city of Cypress left Steven Keith Toole, 45, in critical condition and on life support. As of yesterday morning, he was pronounced dead police announced today.

It was a beautiful day downtown this afternoon for the St. Patrick's Day Parade and Pershing Square celebration. Because most of the city has a job and today was a Monday, here is what happened, virtual style...

It's 8:30 a.m. and by the count on this list, at least five Irish bars are open right now: Brennan's Pub, Casey's Irish Bar and Grille, Clancy's, O'Brien's Irish Pub, Patrick Molloys and Tom Bergin's Tavern. Whoops, make that six (derrr, the morning O'Doul's is already kicking in).

Many people do not find corned beef and cabbage very appealing. That's because most people (and most bars) boil the corned beef and vegetables together, resulting in a greasy, unappealing mess. Remember, it is still a brisket, so you want to treat it as such. Imagine throwing a big T-bone into a boiling pot of water; it would taste like crap too. The secret is to cook the corned beef in the oven, and to cook the vegetables separately. That keeps them from becoming greasy.

Just in time for St Paddy's Day, we check out some of the Irish coffees around town. Screw green beer. That stuff will kill you. After drinking many Irish Coffees in the name of serious scientific research, I have discovered a good Irish coffee relies on two relatively simple elements: the freshness of the coffee and use of real heavy cream

Legend says that Echo Park got its name from workers building the original reservoir said their voices echoed off the canyon walls. However...

All right, you alchie lads and lassies, your day is near, the one time of the year where the bars open up for breakfast and people won't look at you twice for having a little whiskey with your morning cuppa. Take the day off so you can start drinking early to beat the mad crowds and avoid the long lines. These Irish pubs can accommodate your pre-dawn cravings as they open up in the a.m. for St. Patrick's Day next Monday.
