Rains Come, Roads Close

More rain is headed our way and LA Now reminds us that with new rain, old road closures remain and several areas are closed to fix damage from last week's storms. Interstate 5 at Route 14 and Routes 330, 18, 78, 133 and 241 all have closures. A wind advisory is in effect through the Grapevine and campers and trailers are advised not to travel until the advisory expires. Check the roads before you drive and stay safe out there. For up-to-the-minute road conditions tonight call Caltrans at (800) 427-7623. more ›

Wet Wednesday Worries For Weasonable Angewenos

Wet Wednesday Worries For Weasonable Angewenos

It's not yet time to burn your rubber boots in toxic protest, more rain is headed for your brain. Sometime after midnight, we're gonna chug-a-lug and shout, because scattered showers are forecast tonight through Thursday, reports the National Weather Service. New Year’s, however, in a fit of irony and pun-ism, will likely be, ahem, dry, and chilled. more ›

While you're busy chiding your East Coast friends about how fantastic our LA climate is and making them all wish they lived here as they plod through their weekends battling rain and snow and very low temperatures, stormy weather is heading our way and it's going to strike soon. Photos: What the Storms Looked Like from Space

NASA has been monitoring the storm from above and has released two satellite images from earlier this week. The first one shown above is from Wednesday via NASA's Aqua satellite. "Over the Pacific Ocean and the California coast, clouds assume the shape of a giant apostrophe, looking vaguely like a hurricane missing most of its center," the agency explains. "The storm's shape suggests a low-pressure system drawing in strong winds from nearby areas. Patches of clear sky allow glimpses of California’s Central Valley and Baja California." more ›

LAistory: The Santa Monica Pier

On September 9th, the Santa Monica Pier celebrated its Centennial. Fireworks lit up the sky and thousands of people gathered to honor a landmark that seems to be synonymous not only with Santa Monica, but with Los Angeles, and our love affair with having fun at the edge of the Pacific Ocean more ›

Sunday Photoist: Remember the Rains This Week?

Sunday Photoist: Remember the Rains This Week?

This photograph, submitted earlier this week to our LAist Featured Photos pool on Flickr, show's an office-eyes' view of those menacing storm clouds that swept over Los Angeles earlier this week and let loose a torrent of rain. Thankfully the December rainstorm allowed us to add to our rainfall total and escape having this rain year (not the same as a calendar year, it turns out) go down as the driest on record. That dubious honor goes to the last rain year. In any event, this photograph shows that proverbial calm before the storm, and might remind us to be thankful we're neither buried in blizzards or blazing hot right now. more ›

A Hard Rain's A-Comin'--Drive Safe, LA!

A Hard Rain's A-Comin'--Drive Safe, LA!

Overnight rainstorms brought at least a dozen motor accidents on slick roads and freeways, and the light rain that is gracing the Los Angeles area right now is "expected to intensify later in the day, prompting forecasters to issue a flash flood watch for fire-denuded areas of Los Angeles and Orange counties" according to KNBC.com. These areas are particularly vulnerable to disastrous mud slides as well. The watch goes into effect at noon today and will last through the night. more ›

Trojans' Second Drop This Week

Trojans' Second Drop This Week

After the Trojans' plummet in the polls following the loss to Stanford and the release of the first BCS poll, many thought the team couldn't or wouldn't drop any further. Not so, as the AP is reporting that a chartered plane with 82 players aboard, headed to Indiana for tomorrow's Notre Dame game experienced an extreme drop while flying through a severe thunderstorm. Weather was so bad that the pilot had to abandon his first... more ›
