LAistory: The Santa Monica Pier

On September 9th, the Santa Monica Pier celebrated its Centennial. Fireworks lit up the sky and thousands of people gathered to honor a landmark that seems to be synonymous not only with Santa Monica, but with Los Angeles, and our love affair with having fun at the edge of the Pacific Ocean

As weather in Los Angeles is still normal, Central and Northern California could be in for another round of dry lightning storms. There are two areas of thunderstorms across the West over the next day or two that have potential to create new wildfires over California.

This photograph, submitted earlier this week to our LAist Featured Photos pool on Flickr, show's an office-eyes' view of those menacing storm clouds that swept over Los Angeles earlier this week and let loose a torrent of rain. Thankfully the December rainstorm allowed us to add to our rainfall total and escape having this rain year (not the same as a calendar year, it turns out) go down as the driest on record. That dubious honor goes to the last rain year. In any event, this photograph shows that proverbial calm before the storm, and might remind us to be thankful we're neither buried in blizzards or blazing hot right now.

Overnight rainstorms brought at least a dozen motor accidents on slick roads and freeways, and the light rain that is gracing the Los Angeles area right now is "expected to intensify later in the day, prompting forecasters to issue a flash flood watch for fire-denuded areas of Los Angeles and Orange counties" according to KNBC.com. These areas are particularly vulnerable to disastrous mud slides as well. The watch goes into effect at noon today and will last through the night.

After the Trojans' plummet in the polls following the loss to Stanford and the release of the first BCS poll, many thought the team couldn't or wouldn't drop any further. Not so, as the AP is reporting that a chartered plane with 82 players aboard, headed to Indiana for tomorrow's Notre Dame game experienced an extreme drop while flying through a severe thunderstorm.
