Finally, Some Prop 8 Leaders Who Aren't Afraid of a Little Fight

Finally, Some Prop 8 Leaders Who Aren't Afraid of a Little Fight

Back in October, the Yes on 8 "people" challenged California's Superintendent of Schools, Jack O'Connell, to a debate about gay marriage. According to Yes, even the remotest possibility of learning anything about gay marriage is harmful to children. Nothing hateful about that! more ›

Tonight in Rock: Sy Smith, Wyclef Jean, Brand New Heavies

It's a quality night in Echo Park with Super Furry Animals and Holy Fuck are at the Echoplex and if you can swing it, right there at The Echo you'll find The Kooks and The Morning Benders. In Hollywood, Grammy award winning Dirty Vegas front man Steve Smith is slated to play acoustic tonight at the Hotel Cafe (but is not on the calendar anymore, so who knows). more ›

Me-Shawn's Famous Last Words

Former #1 overall NFL draft pick and infamous egomaniac** Keyshawn Johnson was a wideout for the Carolina Panthers as of last weekend. When his team drafted USC receiver Dwayne Jarrett (a fellow Trojan) in the second round, he got excited and started talking about mentoring the new kid. Then Carolina cut Johnson from the team to make room for Jarrett. Ouch. This may be sweet justice as far as Jarrett is concerned. Towards the... more ›

Is It Drafty In Here?

Is It Drafty In Here?

Even though Los Angeles doesn't have an NFL team, that doesn't mean this weekend's draft was irrelevant. Unless, of course, you're Mr. Irrelevant, but we'll get to that in a moment. Unlike most major cities in this country, LA is the only one that suffers a net loss of talent whenever the draft happens. The closest team is the San Diego Chargers, who didn't exactly have exciting picks. Choosing LSU wideout Craig Davis over USC's... more ›

Goin' Pro

Goin' Pro

Surprising nobody, USC's All-American wide receiver Dwayne Jarrett announced that he will forgo his final year of eligibility and enter the NFL Draft. The 6'5" Jarrett had an especially strong second half of the 2006 season, after healing from a shoulder injury, and set the Pac-10 record for career touchdowns (41 touchdowns in 38 games) while becoming USC's all-time receptions leader with 216 catches for 3,138 yards. He crowned his college career by winning the... more ›

Ducking a Bullet

Ducking a Bullet

USC is clearly the most talented team in the country, but if they want to avoid these kinds of mini-scares, then the Trojans need to make a few minor changes. USC isn't getting LenDale White involved enough in the offense, and instead is over-using Reggie Bush. When Oregon jumped ahead early thanks to two turnovers, USC hit the panic button and seemingly tried to use Bush in every play, or go deep to Dwayne Jarrett or Steve Smith. That might have worked every play against Arkansas and Hawaii, but not every team is a pushover. more ›

High Flying Start

High Flying Start

While Leinart is the Trojan making the most headlines after his highly-publicized decision to stay in school, LAist thinks Bush is the key the Trojans offense. We like his chances to win the Heisman Trophy this year. His explosive speed seems virtually unstoppable. But LAist also doesn't want people to forget about LenDale White, who is one of the five best running backs in college football right now, and wide receiver Steve Smith, who looks ready to have a major breakout season. more ›

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!

Admittedly, LAist is surprised that USC was able to roll over Oklahoma so easily 55-19. The Sooners have looked like a great team all year, and for them to play so porous was a surprise. But the Trojans just have more talent than everyone else, Auburn and Utah included. more ›

Sun Dried

Sun Dried

For once we saw the dominant USC team we expected to see all season long, as Matt Leinert flawlessly ran the offense, Reggie Bush did everything as usual, and Dwayne Jarrett finally emerged as a legitimate heir apparent to Mike Williams. more ›

Passing the Test

Passing the Test

The Trojan win was probably the more impressive of the two, given that Colorado State might actually be a better team than Illinois. While USC's defense was unforgiving, Steve Smith gave the Cardinal and Gold some confidence about its Post-Mike Williams era receivers for the first time. The Trojans can now restart that Matt Leinert Heisman campaign. more ›

Not a Bard Start

Not a Bard Start

It was simply the first game of the season, and college football has no exhibitions. In the first half, USC looked like it needed one. But in the second half, the Trojans figured out how to defend the option and held the Hokies to merely a field goal. The Trojan offensive unit improved steadily throughout the game, although the offensive line still needs some work. more ›
