Steve Harvey's "Only in L.A." column this weekend heads underground to some familiar LAist territory: The Belmont Tunnel. The one-mile stretch used to be LA's first--and only--subway, opening in 1925 but shut down thirty years later. Harvey notes that once the Red Cars stopped using the tunnel, it was put to work as "a storage site for survival rations, a holding cell for impounded vehicles, a movie set and, unofficially, a giant graffiti canvas and field of study for urban explorers."

Today's "Only in LA" column in the Times checks in with the restaurant to see if the myth still holds. Steve Harvey explains, "The trend supposedly began after some very pregnant women from a birthing class dined there -- and then went into labor. All had ordered the romaine and watercress salad. One theory held that the balsamic vinegar dressing triggered contractions of the uterus." A quick call to Caioti confirmed that ladies looking to get their buns out of their ovens still order up what's called simply "The Salad." They are even offered a journal kept by the restaurant so they can record their visit, and those for whom the so-called miraculous salad works sometimes send in photos of their newborn.

Nick's initials happen to be the same as the abbreviation for "not visible," which happens to be commonly used when Parking Officers cannot see the license plate or it's missing. Too bad for Nick, who scored the license plate, NV, got a delinquency notice everytime it was written on a ticket that went unpaid:

There are lots of comings and goings on the radio this week as Steve Harvey's morning show on The Beat signed off on Friday and Suicide Girls Radio joined the Indie 103 lineup over the weekend. Harvey's popular show continued to do well in the mornings but was very expensive to produce and failed in its efforts at syndication. Former Laker and Best Damn Sports Show correspondent John Salley took over the slot for KKBT this morning.
