TV Junkie: Comedy Central's 'Night of Too Many Stars' Photo Gallery

On Saturday October 2, 2010 at the Beacon Theater in NYC we went to Comedy Central's "Night of Too Many Stars: An Overbooked Concert for Autism Education" charity event. Before going into the theatre we went to the red carpet where we snapped photos of several performers and attendees including: John Oliver, Sarah Silverman, Ricky Gervais, Olivia Munn, Jim Gaffigan, Steve Carrell, and Lewis Black (more photos in my Flickr gallery). Watch for our interview video with several of these folks. more ›

Weekend Movie Guide: Battle of Mediocrity

Weekend Movie Guide: Battle of Mediocrity

Steve Carrell is one of the funniest guys on television but it looks like he's dropped another turd on the big screen. It's never a good sign when the preview to a comedy is unable to generate more than a few, soft giggles from audiences, but that appears to be the case for Get Smart. Anne Hathaway is a marvelously appealing actress, but she looks awfully uncomfortable in the role of an action hero. And Dwayne Johnson? Pass. more ›

Weekend Movie Guide: All Angels

Weekend Movie Guide: All Angels

David Gordon Green is in the very first rank of American filmmakers. As far as I'm concerned, every movie he makes is an automatic must-see on opening weekend. Snow Angels debuted last week in New York and opens today in Los Angeles. What sets Green's films apart from so many others is the lyrical melancholy that hovers over every scene and the carefully observed and rich humanity that inhabits every frame. tells two stories about love--one in ascension and one in decline. See it and be rewarded. more ›

Weekend Movie Guide: The bad, the ugly and the good

Weekend Movie Guide: The bad, the ugly and the good

After the disaster that was . Carell stars as a widower who inadvertently falls in love with his brother's girlfriend--hey, who fucking hasn't?! Celebrated French hellcat, er, actress Juliette Binoche stars as said girlfriend (which is good). Dane Cook is the brother, though, which is bad. Which is awful. Which sucks so hard there's no way I'm seeing this movie. more ›

DVD Tuesday: Penguins, Zombies, YHWH...

DVD Tuesday: Penguins, Zombies, YHWH...

Surf's Up was actually better than Happy Feet but, as my grandpa used to always tell me, the second Penguin-themed animated movie never does as well as the first. 28 Weeks Later may lack the novelty of 28 Days Later, but it's just as tense and terrifying. The fate of Robert Carlyle is truly awful. Amazingly, even Steve Carrell can be unfunny sometimes. YHWH is truly powerful. John Dahl never gets the rich praise... more ›

Little Miss Best Movie of the Year

Little Miss Best Movie of the Year

While it's true that we've reviewed "Little Miss Sunshine" here on LAist earlier this summer, to be honest, we didn't really trust our writer. She was new, she was impressionable, she's young... when she raved about how great the film was we just thought she was jumping on the 93% bandwagon. So we went to the Arclight this afternoon to see if the low-budget independent could live up to the hype. Ladies and gentlemen,... more ›

Get ready to say goodbye to The Office ™

Get ready to say goodbye to The Office ™

TheOffice opened in March of 2004, promising a quiet, zen-like space for writers and artists to work in. The idea was very simple, and they pulled it off very well. There is no talking at TheOffice, no faxing, no copying, no chattering printers, no cell phones. The only sound you would hear would be the clickety-clack of computer keyboards, but they give you Bose Noise-Cancelling Headphones when you check in, so you don't even hear that. You enter a bubble of quiet near the heart of Santa Monica. Plus they have free coffee, tea, and Red Vines. If they offered Twizzlers, that'd really be something. more ›
