Anne and Steve run to a screening of Iron Man | Photo courtesy of Warner Brothers Steve Carrell is one of the funniest guys on television but it looks like he's dropped another turd on the big screen. It's never a good sign when the preview to a comedy is unable to generate more than a few, soft giggles from audiences, but that appears to be the case for Get Smart. Anne Hathaway is a......

Horton hears some serious dough | Photo courtesy of Twentieth Century Fox With a huge release hitting theaters virtually every Friday, it's rare that a movie tops the box office over successive weekends and yet that's exactly what Horton Hears a Who managed over the Easter holiday. It took in a healthy $25.1M ($86.4M), easily outdistancing Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns which brought in a reliably solid $20M in its debut. Fellow newcomer Shutter......

Fat elephant struggles to save bacteria colony | Photo courtesy of Twentieth Century Fox To no one's surprise, Horton Hears a Who swamped the box office this weekend with a year's best $45.1M. It easily out-distanced 10,000 B.C. which managed to bring in an additional $16.4M ($61.2M) in its second weekend. Newcomer Never Back Down surprised to the high side with a take of $8.6M followed by hold-overs College Road Trip ($7.8M/$24.2M), Vantage Point......

Love Will Tear Us Apart | Photo courtesy of Warner Independent David Gordon Green is in the very first rank of American filmmakers. As far as I'm concerned, every movie he makes is an automatic must-see on opening weekend. Snow Angels debuted last week in New York and opens today in Los Angeles. What sets Green's films apart from so many others is the lyrical melancholy that hovers over every scene and the carefully......

After the disaster that was Evan Almighty, Steve Carell seems to have recovered (albeit slightly) with Dan in Real Life. Carell stars as a widower who inadvertently falls in love with his brother's girlfriend--hey, who fucking hasn't?! Celebrated French hellcat, er, actress Juliette Binoche stars as said girlfriend (which is good). Dane Cook is the brother, though, which is bad. Which is awful. Which sucks so hard there's no way I'm seeing this movie.......

Surf's Up was actually better than Happy Feet but, as my grandpa used to always tell me, the second Penguin-themed animated movie never does as well as the first. 28 Weeks Later may lack the novelty of 28 Days Later, but it's just as tense and terrifying. The fate of Robert Carlyle is truly awful. Amazingly, even Steve Carrell can be unfunny sometimes. YHWH is truly powerful. John Dahl never gets the rich praise......

While it's true that we've reviewed "Little Miss Sunshine" here on LAist earlier this summer, to be honest, we didn't really trust our writer. She was new, she was impressionable, she's young... when she raved about how great the film was we just thought she was jumping on the 93% bandwagon. So we went to the Arclight this afternoon to see if the low-budget independent could live up to the hype. Ladies and gentlemen,......

If you've only seen one of the nominated movies, haven't voted in any pools and are really only tuning in to the Oscars to see Jon Stewart, the, highlights of the evening are not so much the awards as any funny or memorable moments in the ceremony. So far: - Stewart turned his trademark self-deprecation into a funny opening film that poked fun at all the rumors that he was far down on the......

Thankfully, we don’t mean the Steve Carrell US imitation of the hit BBC comedy, but unfortunately we do mean the workspace over in Santa Monica. TheOffice opened in March of 2004, promising a quiet, zen-like space for writers and artists to work in. The idea was very simple, and they pulled it off very well. There is no talking at TheOffice, no faxing, no copying, no chattering printers, no cell phones. The only sound......
