In wake of the city of Bell sky high salary scandal, everyone wants more transparency. State controller John Chiang will post all city and county salaries from around the state online in November, but to get elected state officials to post their own salaries, as well as their staffs', that's a harder proposition. State Senate Approves Bill that Brings East L.A. Closer to Cityhood
After being approved by the Appropriation Committee, AB 711 was approved by the California Senate yesterday, which will give supporters of cityhood in East Los Angeles a loan that will enable them to move forward with the lengthy process, according to cbs2. The emergency bill provides funds for "a study to determine whether cityhood for unincorporated East Los Angeles is financially viable." The next step is for the state Assembly and Governor Schwarzenegger to approve the bill. Backers of the cityhood movement have until Thursday to come up with $45k to contribute to the study fund.
Family Council Says Bill Will 'Further Undermine & Confuse Marriage'
The California Family Council this week went on the offense about a bill making its way through the legislature that would redefine marriage, literally. As they explain, Senator Mark Leno's SB 906 would make "several unnecessary changes to the state Family Code related to the definition of marriage by replacing the term 'marriage' with the phrase 'civil marriage,' attempting to create a new class of marriage."
