There were a lot of preconceived notions with the Lakers and Celtics that were dashed in the Lakers’ 88-87 overtime victory in the Boston Garden (or TD Price WaterhouseCooper Garden whatever it’s called now).
Lakers and Celtics Dispel Preconceived Notions
OC Kids Bribed With Soccer Game Tickets to Stay Out of Gangs
Got motivation, kids? The Chivas USA pro soccer team and the Orange County Gang Reduction and Intervention Partnership (GRIP) are hoping the promise of free tickets to see a game is enough to keep a few school-aged kids out of ganglife.
A Mixed Bag for Los Angeles Sports
It was a mixed bag for Los Angeles sports teams on Tuesday.
Clippers: Guard Chauncey Billups after going down in the fourth quarter Monday night in Orlando was diagnosed with a tear of his left Achilles’ tendon. He will miss the rest of the season
Much Ado About Super Bowl Nothings, Then Kobe Makes History
It really does seem people just like to foam at the mouth over the most irrelevant things. I understand people being horrified by what happened in Penn State and various LAUSD schools. Being horrified by the Holocaust is also acceptable. There needs to be some gravitas is the things we rise up against. That’s why the furor over MIA and Giselle is perplexing.
Lingerie Bowl History: L.A. Wins 3rd Consecutive Championship
Sunday was the Lingerie Bowl, and the Los Angeles Temptation made league history as they took their third consecutive championship by defeating the Philadelphia Passion 28-6 in Lingerie Bowl IX.
A Tale of Three Teams
The three teams who call STAPLES Center home departed on long road trips because of a culturally irrelevant award show happening next Sunday. For all three it will test the mettle as they try and solidify their playoff credentials. And for those three, there were three different results.
NBA Might Be Bad, But the Clippers Are Surely Entertaining
It’s easy to think nothing is wrong with the NBA from our vantage point in Los Angeles. After all it was announced that four of the starting five players for the Western Conference in the All Star Game would be comprised of players from the Lakers (Kobe Bryant, Andrew Bynum) and the Clippers (Blake Griffin, Chris Paul).
Kings Power Play Win Comes with Some Controversy
That was as close to a walk-off in regulation for the Kings in their 3-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets at home. As the final seconds were ticking off ready to send the game to the inevitable overtime period, Drew Doughty got the fortunate bounce during a power-play and shot the puck past Columbus goaltender Curtis Sanford as the clock hit 0.3 remaining.
Lakers and Ducks Get Lopsided Yet Ho-Hum Wins
After a night where two of the three best teams in the NBA Western Conference matched up and featured a ferocious dunk, somehow Tuesday night was a bit of a breather on the excitement meter in Southern California. Hell, only the last two championship winning teams in Southern California played.
Summer Touch Football Banned At Marina Del Rey Beaches: Who Knew?
The Board of Supervisors approved a set of regulation changes governing Marina del Rey beaches and harbors today, one of them being a continuance of the ban on summer touch football. Did anyone out there know this ban existed?
Clippers and Blake Griffin Explode All Over the Thunder
Brent Barry of NBA TV called it their signature win of the season, even more than their overtime win over the Miami Heat. The Clippers indeed put on a spectacular performance in their 112-100 thrashing over the Oklahoma City Thunder, owners of the best record in the NBA.
Are You Ready For Some 'Football?' Local Pup Represents L.A. In Puppy Bowl VIII
Forget football on February 5 (or just take a two-hour break). If "Cute VS Cuddly" isn't reason enough to tune into Animal Planet's Puppy Bowl VIII Sunday afternoon, we've got another reason, Los Angeles. One of our very own from spcaLA is representing this year.
Things Not So Special in NFL's Championship Week
No one ever says, “Special teams win championships.” It’s always, “Defense wins championships,” which the NFL playoffs were trying to reassert after an offense-heavy regular season. But on Championship Sunday everyone witnessed in stark detail that whereas special teams can’t win a championship, it can sure lose a championship for you.
Kings Take a Page from the Lakers Playbook
The Kings and the Lakers have a lot of things in common right now. On Friday night the Lakers shot 19% from the field in a ten-point first quarter of their 92-80 loss to the Orlando Magic, their offensive woes becoming more glaring having only scored in triple-digits once this season. Of course it’s hard to have any offensive continuity when it comprises of only one player.
Kings Burned by Flames in Shootout
As the Kings started their just completed road trip with a Sutter Brothers showdown, they started their four-game home stand with a rematch. While the first matchup was a 4-1 victory for the Kings up in the wasteland of Calgary last week, the rematch was less than inspiring as the Kings lost 2-1 in a shootout.
Kings Refuse to Lose (In Regulation)
Along with Ken Hitchcock of the St. Louis Blues, the only other head coaching change of the seven in the NHL this season that has worked out is Darryl Sutter with the Kings. Along with the Kings’ 3-2 road shootout victory over the Vancouver Canucks Tuesday night, the Kings are now 8-1-5 since Sutter took over the reins on December 20.
Ugliness at STAPLES Center
I was watching Saturday’s Lakers-Clippers game with friends who don’t keep up with sports like I do, although they do enjoy watching sports. You see, they have actual real lives while I live in this suspended adolescent world of athletes. Nonetheless they were still behind the times on the Clippers landing Chris Paul and Chauncey Billups. Although this is a huge indication that they don’t read anything I write, so they’re nothing more than pig fuckers.
Powerful Kings Lose to Dallas in a Shootout, Kopitar Injured
The Kings lost 5-4 in a shootout to the Dallas Stars.
After being down 2-0 in the first period to the Dallas Stars, the Kings buoyed by three power-play goals had taken a 4-3 lead midway through the third period. Yes, you read that correctly: three power-play goals for the first time since March 8, 2010 against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Clippers Squelch Heat in Overtime
On Jan. 12, 2011, the Clippers upset the might Miami Heat 111-105 breaking the Heat’s 13-game road winning streak. The Clippers were an upstart team that lacked the experience to be taken seriously. Fast forward one year, there were questions as to how the Clippers would respond now that they have been anointed as contenders. It turned out the Clippers proved their mettle in their 95-89 overtime win over the Miami Heat.
The Return of Raiders Nation? Team In Talks To Come Back to L.A.
The Raiders were in Los Angeles 1982 to 1994, and they got us the city's only Super Bowl back in '84, so what are the odds the National Football League team will make a comeback in the City of Angels?
Kings Torch the Capitals
If you were to believe ESPN, the BCS and the folks who live in the South, then you would believe the Kings were the best team in the NHL. Like the two SEC teams fighting for the Mythical Championship in college football, the Kings have a pretty stout defense and are stunted on offense. As I have exhaustingly said almost each time I write about the Kings, they are the worst goal scoring team in the NHL. They’re even worse than the New York Islanders and the Anaheim Ducks. But the Kings bucked the offense-deficient trend trouncing the Washington Capitals 5-2.
Don't Mess With Mora: New UCLA Football Coach Boots 2 Players Following First Official Team Meeting
The UCLA football team is down three players, as was announced by new coach Jim Mora on Monday. Mora dismissed two players today, while a third failed to meet the school's academic standards and is no longer a UCLA student.
It's Getting Ugly at STAPLES Center
In New Orleans the nation watched as the Saints performed an offensive clinic in the second half dispatching the Detroit Lions 45-28 in the wild card round of the NFL Playoffs. That offensive mojo obviously did not visit the STAPLES Center today with the Kings losing in regulation for the first time in the Darryl Sutter era 1-0 to the lowly Columbus Blue Jackets and the Clippers edged the Milwaukee Bucks 92-86.
Doughty's Controversial Goal Mercifully Ends Offense-Deprived Hockey Game
For the 21st time in 23 home games, there was a sold-out crowd of 18,118 fill STAPLES Center to watch the Kings edge the Phoenix Coyotes 1-0 in overtime. Why?
Andrew Bynum Plays Big Against Houston
Andrew Bynum was a player Kobe Bryant hated. Maybe it wasn’t a personal hatred, but before Pau Gasol came to Los Angeles it seemed that Kobe saw Bynum as the symbol of the Lakers’ front office incompetence after Shaquille O’Neal was traded. Bryant to this day still grouses about the fact that Smush Parker was a starting point guard for the Lakers.
He's Ours! David Beckham Will Stay With the L.A. Galaxy
Los Angeles, he's ours: Popular soccer star David Beckham has opted to remain in L.A. to play with the Galaxy, rather than join Paris Saint-Germain, the club announced today.
Kings Have a Scoring Problem
It’s no secret that the Kings have a scoring problem. Simply put they have difficulties putting the puck in the net as evidenced by being in the NHL basement in scoring goals. This scoring-itis reared its ugly head again in the Kings 2-1 shootout loss to the Colorado Avalanche.
A New Year Filled with Mystery about Clippers, Lakers
With a new year comes the hope of having a clearer perspective in life. Unfortunately the only perspective I have to offer is about sports since that’s what my life revolves around now. Or at least it’s the only perspective I can afford to have, but really no one cares about what I can or can’t afford. Nevertheless the Lakers and Clippers are neither as good nor as bad as previously thought.
Kings End 2011 Winning
This was definitely worth staying sober on New Year’s Eve for the first time since I was 16 years old. I was only loaded on coffee, and the only white piles near me were the ice shavings at STAPLES Center. And for the first time this season, the Kings were the team that I envisioned them to be before the season started in their 4-1 beatdown of the Vancouver Canucks under the weighty gaze of Gene Simmons.
Surfline Founder Suffers Heart Attack and Dies While Playing Tennis
Seal Beach resident Sean Collins is not only the founder of Surfline, but also a surfing hall-of-famer and "one of the sport’s most influential figures," according to Los Alamitos Patch. Collins, 59, suffered a heart attack Monday while playing a game of tennis, and died soon after at the hospital.
