Having readjusted to the the shock of so many people and bands and free drink specials packed into a few square miles, we thought ourselves prepared for Thursday's festivities - finally in our SXSW stride. We totally forgot that Thursday was St. Patrick's Day. The sea of green that met us as we walked down Lavaca to 6th was a tip off, but it wasn't until we ran into some U of T kids (student population somewhere in the 50,000 range) who informed us it was also spring break, did we realize that we'd be lucky to make it out alive.

This Month in Rock
You know its officially summer when the Hollywood Bowl schedule is in full swing and your local Whole Foods boast empty shelves of wine and cheese. Yes, the sun is out later and perfect temperatures always serve as a pleasant compliment to any night of music, but that isn’t to say that there’s nothing going on in your favorite sweaty rock venue. July happens to be a jam-packed month, and we’d like to give you a little breakdown.

A Word or 51: I thought I was watching my TiVoed Golden Globes broadcast last night but it turned out to be the Screen Actors Guild Awards with the same winners almost across the board. If the Oscars follow suit can't we just get rid of this circle jerk and have one stinkin' awards show? Tonight - Monday - January 29, 2007 UCLA @ Stanford (PRIME, 5:00 p.m.) College basketball Carnival Marathon featuring The...

Get Dirty with Spank Rock
It’s Tuesday night, which means you better “Check Yo’Ponytail” at Safari Sam’s. They knocked us out with their Los Angeles debut at Spaceland this summer, and with a bigger fanbase and nastier lyrics, we’re sure Spank Rock, Baltimore’s raunchy street brats, will do it once again. Bringing Miami booty bass, dirty east coast beats, and lottsa dirty words, Spank Rock’s mind bending hip-hop will show Los Angeles how to do it right. Check Yo’...

Weekend Live Music Picks
Fri 6/9 - Silversun Pickups / Film School @ the Echo ($10) – The Silversun Pickups drop their debut full-length, Carnavas, on July 25th on Dangerbird Records. The record is consistently strong and they're one of the handful of local bands with a really good chance of blowing up this year. Expect to hear a few Smashing Pumpkins comparisons in the reviews (classic Gish/Siamese Dream-era Pumpkins). San Francisco’s Film School frequently gets favorably compared to your favorite Manchester bands.
Top Five New CD Releases
Gram Rabbit Cultivation (Stinky) – They’ve got a unique sound (kind of like Calexico mixed with trip-hop) and they’re from Joshua Tree. This is their second release and they’re performing live at Tower Sunset on 4/20 at 6:00 PM and the Echo on 4/21. Listen to some tracks on MYSPACE.
