While the political establishment sought new and different ways to explain the gifts a Sen. Ted Kennedy endorsement brings to the Barack Obama's campaign, the Time Magazine's and the Salon's missed one key endorsement the winner of South Carolina's Democratic Primary received Monday: Shepard Fairey. Fairey, the acclaimed poster artist and illustrator whose Obey Giant posters have plastered billboards and electrical boxes from Santa Monica to Highland Park, focused on Obama's progressivism in his endorsement.......

From New Hampshire to South Carolina, Democratic poll workers are noticing a trend grounded in passion and a thirst for new executive direction: record turnout. Helping to drive that turnout are organizations like Declare Yourself and Voto Latino; and people like Craig Newmark. You know Craig. He has helped you rent an apartment, find that vintage coffee table or maybe even some action on a lonely Thursday night. I spent about twenty minutes talking......

"Blues and Pinks at the Peninsula" by delara-photos via the LAist Featured Photos pool on Flickr "A very, very good night for Barack Obama just got better," the LA Times said after it reported that the winner of the South Carolina Primary was on the receiving end of two Kennedy endorsements; Caroline Kennedy endorsed Obama this morning in the NY Times and Sen. Ted Kennedy issued his endorsement later in the day. Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton......

Barack is on a roll. He doubled Hillary Clinton's vote count in South Carolina's primary election yesterday. And Caroline Kennedy's op-ed (titled "A President Like My Father") in this morning's New York Times is adding fuel to the fire as pundits across the ideological spectrum ponder the B.O. mo-mo like they haven't since Iowa, a long three-and-a-half weeks ago. Now it's all about February 5. Consider your feelings about the primary today and think about......

Clinton signs outside her Nevada headquarters=nv1962= via Flickr The results from the Nevada Caucus are in and all the major news organizations have crowned Hillary Clinton the winner, with 51 percent of the vote. This marks the second win in a row for Clinton, who teared herself to a New Hampshire primary victory last week and hopes to ride this wave of momentum to next Saturday's South Carolina primary. On the face of it,......

Projected Nevada Democratic caucus winner Hillary Clinton campaigned here in California this week, visiting supporters gathered at CSUN As the results of today's caucuses--including one being held at Caesar's Palace--in Nevada continue to stream in, most are projecting Senator Hillary Clinton and Mitt Romney the winners of the Democratic and Republican races, respectively. The LA Times is reporting that "with 78% of the precincts reporting, Clinton had about 51% of the vote and Obama 45%.......

This weekend marks the height of the "celebrity" dog-and-pony shows for the Democrats: Hillary Clinton brought daughter Chelsea (we wondered where she was) and her momma Dorothy Rodham on the campaign trail in Iowa. And Barack Obama brought out the big gun -- Oprah Winfrey -- to Iowa and South Carolina. But Republicans have friends in Hollywood, too. Mike Huckabee, former governor of Arkansas, also has his own celebrity endorsement: Chuck Norris. Yup. Walker......

If you're a local sports fan, hopefully you had Columbus Day (International Day of Solidarity with Indigenous People, whatever) off to nurse a wicked hangover. In fact, maybe you should take tonight off from Sports Center, too. It's Leif Erikson day. Honest. Even George W. Bush knows that (and don't worry, he's probably not working today, either). Maybe it wasn't the worst, but it was up there. T.J. Simers hit the nail on the......

The cultural diversity that exist in just about every nook and cranny of this country sometimes blinds people of the ignorant, immature, and, in some cases, overtly racist actions of our more idiotic counterparts. We, Americans, like to think that we’ve come a long way since the 1960s and that the battles to destroy prejudice is somewhat obsolete, but every so often high profile cases, like that of the Jena 6, comes along and......

After taking a week off of work (and writing this with almost no care in the world) Saturday should be a very mundane day what with the expected rain. However I can’t take any solace in the fact that there aren’t a lot of games to be excited about. Compelling Matchups #12 South Carolina Gamecocks at #2 LSU Tigers. The ole ball coach has the Cocks riding high on defense. It’s surprising since Steve......

This video comes to LAist via the one and only Elina Shatkin. In the wake of Miss Teen South Carolina's comments from a few weeks ago, we prefer Miss Teen Arkansas. She's just better. Way, way, WAY better. In fact, if Miss Teen Arkansas is single, so are we.......

Servers aren't cheap, so we'd like to take a moment to thank the advertisers on LAist this week: Fierce People for making our family seem so much less dysfunctional than the family in the movie - yikes! Busted Tees for making us feel like our T-shirt collection isn't quite funny enough. Strong American Schools lest we end up like Miss Teen South Carolina. LOGO, the nation's first (and only) openly gay television network, is set to host the next Democratic presidential debate in Los Angeles on August 9. The moderators will include Joe Solmonese, the president of Human Rights Campaign, and Melissa Etheridge, the Academy Award (for her rendition of An Inconvenient Truth's "I Need to Wake Up") and two-time Grammy Award-winning rock musician and prominent gay rights activist. So what specific topics will be on the......

Huston’s Pit BBQ is a bit of an anomaly. It’s an aging, yellow-painted shack smack in the middle of Hollywood, on a stretch of Cahuenga that is also home to such hip, happening spots as Citizen Smith and the Hotel Cafe. You could easily walk right past it and not even register that it’s there. I know I used to, until one day one of our supervisors at work had them cater lunch –......

He has a blog and he has a Flickr page. That alone makes him cool, right? Well... no, kinda hip, maybe. Anyway, all the buzz these days goes to Presidential Candidate Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL). It would have been Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY), but lately, she's reminding us more of the evil Vice President character in Prison Break (it's the way they both talk). Obama is magnetic. So magnetic that "I have never seen......

By now much hay has been made over "Borat", both as a box office smash and as a mockumentary in which the innocent bystanders who participated in it were duped and cheated. When Borat opened over a week ago Fox booked it in about 800 theaters nationwide, that's less than one-fourth the number of theaters that "Santa Clause 3" opened in and still Sacha Baron Cohen crushed Tim Allen (Yes! There is a God!).......

The "Column One" feature, "Holding Up a Tradition," on the front page of yesterday's Los Angeles Times mystifies us. Why would Angelenos be interested in the antebellum architecture craze sweeping the South? The piece focuses on the popularity of a new housing subdivision in South Carolina called "I'On" that features houses modeled after antebellum plantation buildings with generous porches and collonades. Perhaps Times editors thought it time to publish a literal "Column One" feature......
