Even in areas that are not often associated with nature and outdoor activity, such as the Port of Los Angeles, there are opportunities to get exercise. Case in point: 22nd St. Park, one of the South Bay’s newest outdoor facilities.

Church VS Strip Club: Parishioners Protest Gentleman's Club
Harbor Gateway will soon be home to another gentleman's club, and one nearby church is especially disenchanted by its future neighbor. Members of Calvary Chapel South Bay are voicing concern over the Bay Girls Gentleman's Club - slated to open next weekend - and have penned a petition against the adult entertainment venue's opening.
Food Trucks Bullied Again, Evicted In Hawthorne
Anyone who indulged (and/or overindulged) in this past Saturday's LA Street Food Fest understands the beauty of L.A. food trucks. Hawthorne officials, however, do not, as reported by The Daily Breeze. A Best Buy parking lot in Hawthorne became a once-weekly home to a dozen food trucks in June, spurring a recurring Tuesday night mobile eatery extravaganza. Claiming that the gatherings violated the city's Municipal Code, officials halted the event just weeks after its inception.
Janice Hahn Says She Won't Run for Late Sen. Oropeza's Seat
Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn said today that she is not going to throw her hat in the ring for the special election to fill late state Senator Jenny Oropeza's 28th District seat, reports the Daily Breeze.
Worst Frame Job Ever: Mark Sanchez Did Not Rob a South Bay Bank
Police are searching for a balding heavyset sexagenarian man who allegedly robbed a Manhattan Beach bank on Monday, according to the Daily Breeze. Most memorable about the suspect was what he was wearing: a "Mark Sanchez" New York Jets jersey.
Green Line Extension Could Give South Bay More Light Rail Miles
The Westside Subway may be the popular kid on the block, but let's not forget about possible plans to extend the Green Line deeper into the South Bay. Specifically, Metro is looking to extend the Green Line 4.6 miles from its terminating Redondo Beach station to the proposed Torrance Regional Transit Center.
Republican Launches Silly Ad in Bid Against Jane Harman
A silly ad is how you get attention, right? Well, the Republican candidate for California's 36th Congressional District, which covers Venice, the South Bay, San Pedro and parts of South L.A., has certainly done that.
Topless Women Not Part of San Pedro's Beautification Plan
Residents in San Pedro are working hard to prevent a topless bar from opening up at 1010 N. Gaffey Street [map], reports the Daily Breeze.
ArcLight Cinemas to Open 4th Location in South Bay
Fresh off opening their third location in Pasadena, Pacific Theatres today announced their next venture: ArcLight Beach Cities. CEO Christopher Forman called the new location "a natural extension of the ArcLight brand in the Greater Los Angeles Area."
Food Trucks' Candidate Wins Primary
There's no telling how much a coalition of food trucks that rallied around a candidate helped, but in any case, their choice won. Betsy Butler won the Democratic nomination in Assembly District 53, which covers parts of the Westside and South Bay.
3.6 Earthquake Strikes Santa Monica Bay
A small earthquake, described by some as a "quick jolt," occurred just a few miles off shore of the South Bay this morning. The 3.6 magnitude shaker struck at 2:17 a.m. 3 miles from Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach, according to the USGS. It only took a few minutes before a 1,000 tweets blew by. "Nothing like going to bed and having mother nature rock you to sleep with an earthquake," said softpipes. Up here in the Valley, nothing was felt at LAist's Studio City headquarters. Some reported feeling it as far as Pomona, Simi Valley and Irvine. Did you feel it?
Police Recover 23 Bicycles, 16 Strollers & More in the South Bay
A man and a woman were arrested Wednesday after the Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach police departments conducted a probation search at a residence in the L.A. neighborhood of Westchester, finding several stolen items. Bicycle theft was on the rise last fall in the South Bay and this was one reason why. Anthony Michael Taraszka, 33, and Michelle Renee Thomspon, 31, who were both arrested in 2004 for stealing 50 bicycles, were apparently stealing bicycles, strollers and motorized scooters to support their drug habit by selling parts on eBay. In all, 23 bicycles and 16 high-end strollers were found. Both were charged with multiple counts of possession of stolen property and identity theft.
Rally to 'Free the Dune!' With Beach Party Sunday
Manhattan Beach's 40-year-old Sand Dune Park has been behind a chain link fence since August, when city officials closed it down for what was supposed to be about a month of maintenance work. Only the popular fitness and recreation spot hasn't reopened, and many fear it will remain shut down because of a fear of destruction from over-use or "neighborhood problems" like parking.
AOL Starting Hyper-Local Sites, Begins with Manhattan Beach
AOL is launching a new neighborhood news service called Patch. It's hyper-local to the core, as they just hired a full time editor to live and breath Manhattan Beach day in, day out. Soon they'll launch a Redondo Beach version and so on, apparently. This type of reporting is much needed and if successful like Eric Richardson's blogdowntown, where city council agendas are scrutinized and development news is broke, this will be exciting. Kevin Roderick at LA Observed, however, has a note of caution: "the difficult trick on coverage of small cities is to be knowledgeable without becoming a tool of the city officials, politicians and community leaders who care more about favorable coverage and avoidance of controversy than about accuracy or independence." Currently a feature piece on the MB portal is a piece about parking meter rate hikes.
Three South Bay Streets Get Synchronized
A $2.1 million program to synchronize lights in Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach and Torrance has been completed, L.A. County Supervisor Don Knabe announced today.
As part of the County's Traffic Signal Synchronization Program to enhance traffic flow, long-swaths of three streets should have better coordinated timing of signals. Those streets are...
Recession Obsession: South Bay Chicken Shackin' Up
South Bay eats can be tricky. I once heard someone describe a Hermosa Beach restaurant as “like what you would find in LA.” That made me scratch my head and walk the other way -- right to Hermosa’s “The Chicken Shack,” which boasts claims “the best chicken around.” (They do have the best car around.) While they may not have the best chicken in LA, they do have some of the best around... the South Bay. This is a good thing.
The PoPo with the Ho! Ho!
The Redondo Beach Police Officer's Association has been celebrating the holidays every year by sending Santa Claus around the city to pass out candy, listen to Christmas wishes and spread good cheer. It takes an entire month for the heavily guarded Santa to make his way down every single residential street of the city, assisted by Redondo Beach Police and Fire Association members.

More Public Transit Community Meetings: Light Rail from Wilshire to LAX
October is going to be a busy month for public meetings about transportation. The city of Los Angeles is hosting a set of them on the draft master bicycle plan while Metro will gather input at a series of meetings about the Wilshire bus lanes.
Did You Hear the One About the Barista Who Works in Her Bikini?*
Making the rounds in the news today is this freshly-brewed story of a new drive-through coffeehouse where the servers shun the more typical apron and khakis in favor of two very different pieces altogether: The bikini.
Vigil Held in Torrance For US Journalists Imprisoned in North Korea
A vigil was held at a Torrance Church this morning in honor of Euna Lee and Laura Ling, according to MyFoxLA. The two American journalists were recently sentenced to twelve years of hard labor in North Korea on charges of being spies. The pair, who were working on a piece for San Francisco-based network Current TV, were captured on March 17th and put to trial earlier this month.
Struggling to Stay Alive: Owning a Restaurant in the Recession
Mike Radke bought Maui Rose in Hermosa Beach about a little over a year ago, and serves up the finest Hawaiian fusion and Asian cuisine this side of the 405 freeway. Even though he has delicious food, a great location, and cooking skills, times are tough.
Temperature Check: Beach or Valley? 30 Degree Difference
It's 97 in Woodland Hills. Drive 12 miles over the Santa Monica Mountains to Malibu and you'll be in the low 70s. Head a little further south to the Southbay and welcome to the high 60s. Now take the 10 freeway to Downtown and you'll split the difference at 85 degrees. What's your pick?
Fallen Tree in Laurel Canyon Causes Power Outage
It's not the nicest way to wake up on what is a holiday for many: A large tree fell over during the rainstorm this morning in Laurel Canyon, "knocking down three power poles, blocking Wonderland Avenue and interrupting electricity to about 1,700 customers," according to the Daily News.
Redondo Beach Bans Beach Smoking
The only legal spot along the South Bay coastline to smoke a cigarette has been put out. Redondo Beach City Council last night voted to ban smoking at the beach and in public parks. One councilman voted no saying police don't have the resources to enforce the law. But with that thinking, most everything shouldn't be a law. The next headline will be "Redondo Beach to ban stop signs."
Redondo Beach to Take Up Smoking on Beaches
The only Southbay city that still allows smoking on the beach will debate the issue tonight in a city council meeting. In the past, city officials have worried about various issues including inadequate resources to enforce such a ban and infringing on personal rights leading them to take no action on the ban. But the heyday of passing no smoking in public laws is here and now in California. The council will also talk about banning smoking in public parks.
Sarah's 'Spunk' a Selling Point in the South Bay
Some sellers in California can't unload their Palin Syrah, but in the South Bay some can't wait to get a taste of Sarah Palin. The Republican vice presidential nominee is headed to So Cal for a rally at the Home Depot Center in Carson on October 4th, and folks were eager to get their tickets yesterday from the Republican campaign offices in Torrance.
South Bay Sushi - Sashi Sushi + Sake lounge
I was invited to dinner at Sashi by the restaurant's PR firm. I was very excited to try executive Chef Makoto Okuwa's sushi, who worked under Chef Morimoto of Iron Chef fame and was executive sushi chef at Morimoto in both D.C. and NYC. Now, I've found that people's standards about sushi vary greatly, so here's my disclaimer: I'm by no means a sushi connoisseur, but I've been to a few great places around our delicious city. I don't mind an occasional venture out to some creative rolls but will largely judge a sushi place by the quality of its traditional nigiri (fish on rice) sushi.
South Bay Seafood: Captain Kidd's
My search for hard core seafood at casual prices continues, we have a pretty solid place lined up for today. Captain Kidd's in Redondo Beach is half seafood market, half restaurant. It's a little confusing, but there are three lines. One line is for drinks -- they have a good selection of beers on tap. The line in the back is where you can order combo plates or most anything else you'd like -- if you don't want to pick out which piece of fish you want. The main line in the front left part of the restaurant is the seafood line, where you can pick your fish or crustacean from a grocery seafood display case -- they'll write up your order, take your money, and give you a number. They'll holler when your order is ready. So! Let me show you what we got tonight...
LAistory: The Wreck of the Dominator
The Dominator ran aground on March 13, 1961 at the point between Lunada Bay and Malaga Cove, near Rocky Point. Carrying a load of wheat and beef from Vancouver, B.C, the vessel was trapped by the current after coming too close to the cliffs. Residents have watched over the years as the sea slowly destroyed the wreckage, until finally just a few bits of the hull and bow remain scattered on the shore. More of the boat is visible at low tide. There are two routes by which to access the wreckage today. Experienced hikers and climbers can make their way down the steep cliffs, but must be cautious of the rocky terrain. It is recommended you go at low tide, be prepared to get wet, and keep an eye out for interesting tide pools.
