What Would Don Draper Tweet?: Ad Man Integrates Social Media Into Coursework

If “Mad Men” has taught us anything, it’s that advertising is all about the client and the product. But a “Mad Man” for the technology age urges ad firms to put the Don Draper era behind them and consider the consumer in a new manner: through the lens and the interactive venue of today’s social media tools.

Sanitation 2.0

For those living in apartments or condo buildings, much of the recycling is done by the city's Multifamily Residential Recycling Program from the the L.A. Bureau of Sanitation. The progressive department, who is also aggressively working on a zero waste plan with the public, has now entered the world of Web 2.0. They just set up Twitter and Facebook accounts so people can learn about materials accepted in blue bins, but also for residents to send suggestions and questions. Sounds like a good idea considering over 400,000 multifamily residential units take part in the program.

California Politicians Go Tweet, Tweet, Tweet in the Name of Transparency

California Governor-hopeful and San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom is part of a trailblazing trend: Politicians and social media. Along with current Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Golden State politicos are part of what is re-shaping the face of campaigns, according to an Associated Press report:

Online social networks are rapidly making traditional political advertisements obsolete, said veteran political strategist Joe Trippi, who used Internet fundraising to propel Howard Dean’s 2004 presidential campaign. The social networks are giving elected leaders like [Newark, NJ Mayor Cory] Booker and Newsom a new way to satiate the public’s hunger for transparency. “These are the first politicians to build considerable followings on Twitter, and they’re doing it by taking the filter out and showing people who they really are,” Trippi said of Booker and Newsom. “Twitter and these other social networks and new media demand authenticity. This is the future.”
Both Newsom and his NJ counterpart are doing well in the numbers--the Twitter numbers, that is. "As of Saturday, Newsom ranks ninth on Twitter among all elected officials carrying the 'political' tag, according to Twitterholic. Booker is 13th." On that list, the Governator is 10th, topped by President Obama, former Vice President Gore, and Senator John McCain.

Counting On the Twits Running for Governor

Late yesterday afternoon LA Observed's Kevin Roderick offered up some insight on the recent goings-on in local politics during his KCRW commentary. In addition to taking a look at this week's winners and losers--err, in the context of elections--Roderick took a look at what may or may not be the pop culture litmus test for potential electoral success. Yes, you guessed it: Twitter.

Gavin Newsom Uses Twitter to Announce His Run for Governor

"It’s official. Today, I became a candidate for governor because California needs a new direction," wrote San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom in an e-mail blast today. "In San Francisco, we’re showing what can be accomplished when we stop looking back and start looking for solutions," Newsom said. "We are the first, and still the only, city in America implementing universal health care. We’re proving what you already knew - it is less expensive to keep people well than it is to treat their sicknesses."

The Coast Guard Gets It: Goes Web 2.0 to Serve the Public

Yesterday evening, the local United States Coast Guard Sector entered a new era of public information by launching a blog. This is "a revolution on how we deal with information management and the new social media, or some people call it, Web 2.0.," Admiral Thad W. Allen sternly said in a video. "We are not living in the same information environment we grew up in, it's critically important that senior leaders of the United States Coast Guard understand what technology is doing today, how it is changing, how we must change with it."

Now this is probably one of the coolest success stories of government communicating with the public efficiently. LA Fire Department Spokesman Brian Humphrey writes at their blog about overhearing a Starbucks Barista using Twitter to find out what passing fire trucks are up to:

Nic Adler grew up at The Roxy. His father, Lou Adler, opened the club the year Nic was born. He would spend his afternoons after school at the club and grew to dislike the rock music it became so famous for spotlighting.

A couple weeks back we interviewed Alex Delyle, managing editor of the West Hollywood-based startup The Daily Reel at the Economics of Social Media conference.

The inaugural EconSM conference, produced by Rafat Ali's ContentNext Media Network (parent of the excellent PaidContent site) is rockin' the Beverly Hilton with entertainment and new media heavies. EconSM addresses the present and potential economy of the social media marketplace in regards to online news, Hollywood, music, mobile media, and more. The amusing "Social Media Meets Hollywood" panel, in which Carson Daly sat alongside The L Word executive producer Ilene Chaiken, preceded lunch. Daly...
