TV Junkie: Thursday

Thursday night I almost invariably turn to NBC - what's gonna happen if we run out of new episodes of our fave shows? I might have to get creative, perish the thought. I apologize for writing the word "fashionistas" yesterday, I also apologize for saying that Kenny vs. Spenny was premiering - what we got last night was a sneak preview, not a premiere, the premiere happens on Sunday.

This Week in the World of -Ist

Londonist got the big scoop of the week with what may be the first images of notorious street artist Banksy in action. They also got on a runaway train without an operator provoking a response from the transport authorities. Elsewhere, London's answer to Central Station is about to open for business, and Londonist got a sneak preview. Meanwhile, spooky goings-on beneath London Bridge, where a cache of skeletons provided an apt story for Hallowe'en.

Weekly Movie Picks: Italian Exploitation, Waitress, Larry Gottheim, LA Harbor Film Festival + More

The week begins with a John Hayes double feature. In Grave of the Vampire, legendary vampire Kroft awakens and rapes a woman in a graveyard. The resulting child doesn't need milk. He needs… blood! This is paired with Jailbait Babysitter, which stars Therese Pare as a teenager who's turned out by an older prostitute (Lydia Wagner).

Sneak Preview of Grindhouse Tonight at the New Bev

Don't forget. If you want to see a sneak preview of the Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez double feature, Grindhouse (Planet Terror = Rodriquez; Death Proof = Tarantino), head over to the New Beverly tonight at 11 p.m. Actually, head over at 9:45 p.m. That's when tickets go on sale, and there's a good chance it will sell out. If you wanna go in true grindhouse style, I recommend rolling up in a 1970s Dodge Challenger...

Weekly Movie Picks: Hot Fuzz, Killer of Sheep, Grindhouse, Godard & More

Grindhouse The week begins with a pair of 70s actions flicks. The Lady in Red, which has one of my favorite taglines of all time "She's made of bullets, sin & bathtub gin!" is a gangster film starring Robert Conrad as John Dillinger and Pamela Sue Martin as his moll. (Bonus: it was written by John Sayles.) In Bare Knuckles a Los Angeles bounty hunter tracks a psychopath who murders women by using kung-fu. Then...

Besides exposure for new and upcoming music, SXSW also serves as a launching pad for products, companies and shows like MTV's upcoming Human Giant. Starring funny men Aziz Ansari, Rob Huebel and Paul Scheer, the show kicked off a sneak preview party last night at Friends on 6th St. We ran into Sam Grossman, development exec at MTV. He talked about the new sketch comedy show with us over beers. “There’s a Bugs Bunny...

New Beverly Announces Films for Quentin Tarantino Grindhouse Festival

The New Beverly has announced the schedule for 2007 the Los Angeles Grindhouse Festival Grindhouse festival, which is this year programmed by Quentin Tarantino and runs from March 4 - May 1. Many of the prints come from Tarantino's vast and awesome private collection, reputed to be among the best in the world for such films. As we reported last week, Los Angeles' best revival house will screen themed, handpicked double features on weekdays...

Movie Picks: Matthew Barney, Bonnie & Clyde, PAFF, Woman in the Dunes & More!

Why woo your sweetheart with such tediously traditional notions as flowers, teddy bears and edible panties when you could watch Matthew Barney and his inamorata Bjork going at each other with flensing knives on the deck of a Japanese whaling vessel in Drawing Restraint 9? And if that's not enough Barney for you, there's the making-of documentary Matthew Barney: No Restraint. His work has sometimes been described as a "hauntingly dreamlike fantasy and surrealist odyssey," but I think Vern of Aint It Cool has the best take on Matthew Barney.

Movie Picks: Alfonso Cuaron, Pan-African Film Fest, Gay-rotica & More!

The Cirque Comes to Town

Cirque de Soleil is holding court at Staples Center for a limited run, and LAist had a chance Thursday night to catch a sneak preview its latest music-dance-acrobatic-video show “Delirium.” According to the Cirque du Soleil website: DELIRIUM is the quest for balance in a world that is increasingly out of sync with reality. It pushes the limit of arena performance through technical magnitude, human introspection and creative prowess. Basically, the self-billed "live music...

WEDNESDAY

Weekend of Horrors

We here at LAist are strong advocates of Halloween, and have provided the list below in an effort to help all of our readers enjoy this fine holiday as thoroughly as possible. Even if you don't get out there in full costume and party like Bela Lugosi, we hope you enjoy some of the following:

Family Guy Live!

LAist knows this is a few weeks off but you probably need to get your tickets for it now. The cast of "Family Guy" will be doing a reading of classic episodes, giving a live performance from the upcoming comedy album and giving a sneak preview of the first episode of the new season at The Wiltern on April 15th for two shows. "Family Guy Live!" is being produced by Just For Laughs, creators of the Montreal Comedy Festival.

A Sweeter Hereafter

LAist isn't even really sure why we felt compelled to write about Valentine's Day events, considering that it really isn't much of a holiday at all, unless one revels in the unabashed glut of candy and flowers—in which case, we say live it up.

Kip Winger Rules!

• At Largo, Sarah Silverman will be performing her own special, heartwarming brand of standup with Louis CK. Doors open at 8 PM.

Open Yer Head

Sneaky

Because it is October and Halloween is the greatest holiday, LAist is kicking off this month's festivities with a movie that we're pretty sure sets the tone for Shocktober in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles, I'm Yours

Tonight is a great night for film lovers with three sneak previews on the way—the first is especially compelling for anyone who lives in Los Angeles. It's a good night to get out and see a movie, so get rolling!
