The LAist Blog-along: The T.A.M.I. Show

The LAist Blog-along: The T.A.M.I. Show

It’s said to be the greatest concert film ever made, but the T.A.M.I Show in its finished form has been elusive almost since it was released. The Teen Age Music International Show was filmed at the Santa Monica Civic over two nights in late 1964 for eventual release as a feature film, a way for all the small town kids that couldn’t make it to concerts see what their favorite acts were like on stage. After its first theatrical run, the Beach Boys insisted that their sequence be cut out... more ›

Holiday Songs: Merry Old Soul

Holiday Songs: Merry Old Soul

While I deeply love many different kinds of Christmas music, this is one form that tugs hard at the heartstrings. Soul music is just a perfect vehicle for the kind of unironic SINCERITY that I want from a good Christmas song, that makes their heartwarming messages hit home completely. Here's a few to put your mind at ease. more ›

American Idol: It's Over! (Oh yeah, Jordin Won)

American Idol: It's Over! (Oh yeah, Jordin Won)

How would they fill up two hours in the American Idol finale? That was the question on LAist's mind tonight. (And we were particularly bummed since we had to give up the first hour of Lost for this!) Since the show seemed just as long as the Oscars, it was only fitting that AI had filler like the "Golden Idols" -- awards for the freaks during the early part of the show. Remember the... more ›

49th Annual Grammy Awards - Jeffrey Lebowski's Worst Nightmare

49th Annual Grammy Awards - Jeffrey Lebowski's Worst Nightmare

What did you miss at the Grammys last night? Lionel Richie sang "Hello," (sans clay bust) and it was like warm honey. That's what you missed. I'd like to put my vote in now for a fierce Lionel Richie comeback. Also, The Police policed, Chris Rock made a funny about RHCP with their jocks in socks before JT ever put his in a box, Christina Aguilera sang her guts up on a James Brown... more ›

Today in Rock in LA

Today in Rock in LA

For us there is no better LA street fair than the Sunset Junction annual event in the Silver Lake stretch of Sunset Blvd. One can enjoy eating chicken on a stick and drinking a beer while peoplewatching the hipsters, the kids, those of alternative lifestyles, and the random tourists who don't really know what they've stumbled into. The volunteer "donation" is now a hard $15 admission, but for all the good music, good food,... more ›
