Throw 400 growers and producers from 50 states with another 400 "investment" types onto the warehouse event space that is Fort Mason in SF and you get the third annual Slow Money Conference. Here's what some of our L.A. growers, yep Angelenos, are seeking.

LAist Film Calendar: Handsome Harry & Sexy Stephen
There may no longer be a country for old men, but Handsome Harry proves there's still kino for them. Harry plants itself proudly in the old boys' club, where women are no good, sons are all-too-wayward and there's nothing a bottle of scotch won't fix. When retired sailor Harry Sweeney (Jamey Sheridan) receives once-crewmate Tom Kelly (Steve Buscemi)'s dying wish for redemption, he becomes like a ghost, slipping in and out of old friends' lives and haunting them with memories of hidden violence. The disquieting man-to-man vignettes draw handsomely from the old school of independent film. Director Bette Gordon emphasizes a story rarely told, rather than than hip aesthetics or snarky dialogue. It's even got the once-obligatory open ending. Preserve the endangered species of mid-budget adult drama - head over to Laemmle's Sunset any time this weekend and check it out.
GOOD Magazine Launches its LA Community Space
GOOD (named in a fit of unwarranted self-deprecation?) is all sorts of adjectives more grandiose than its namesake. Think Awesome, Impassioned, Rad, Staggering, Inspiring...well, you get the gist. Created in 2006, GOOD is "a collaboration of individuals, businesses, and nonprofits pushing the world forward" through a magazine, blog, videos, and community events. The people at GOOD stand as lighthouses among the seemingly insurmountable fog that is our consumable detritus, gently encouraging us to use our money wisely for change (subscription proceeds go towards a charity of your choosing). I mean, seriously, they are that...swell.
Foodie Round-Up: Go to a Farmer's Market This Weekend!
Would you pay $85 for truffle mac n' cheese? Or would you rather enjoy the cheaper, classic versions at Larkin's or Lucky Devil's? The Glutton over at the LA Times samples the goods for you. What do we want? Conservation programs, access to healthy food, and promotion of renewable energy! When do we want it? Whenever the Senate gets around to voting on the Farm Bill. There's still time to make your voice heard....
LAist Takes a "Taste of Italy"
It was our pleasure to attend yesterday's "Taste of Italy" Wine and Food tasting event that was held to premiere several Italian wines paired with samplings of food from some of LA's best eateries and in benefit of the non-profit eco-gastronomic organization Slow Food. This gave us the unique opportunity to mingle with prestigious vinters and chefs--some of whom, like Angeli Caffe and KCRW's Good Food's Evan Kleiman and the La Brea Bakery's Nancy Silverton, we'd know of and admired for quite some time.
Whine, Whine, Wine
Enjoy a leisurely evening sipping wine and indulging in cocktail conversation at Slow Food LA's wine tasting. It will be held from 6:30–9:00 PM at Mel & Rose Wine and Spirits. Admission is $30.00 per person for Slow Food members and $35.00 for nonmembers; cost includes the tasting, a vintage chart and wine map.
