There's a lot of books out there claiming that they contain the secret to being funny, but only the authors of Comedy by the Numbers actually know how to crack a joke. LAist spoke with co-author Eric Hoffman about the how-to-guide to makem-laughs and crackem-ups, and even got him to reveal a few of the secrets just for you. But, be warned, Eric also reveals the means by which you'd know if you're currently funny or not, so you might find yourself making a shocking discovery. David Fincher's obituary will likely refer to him as the director of Fight Club, but Zodiac is his most complete work. Luxuriate in its full 157 minutes this week when it reaches stores. The Number 23 had a pretty good trailer, but unfortunately the actual movie was longer than 90 seconds. Bring back Lloyd Christmas, Jim! Sure HBO seems to have the best shows on cable, but Showtime is quickly closing the gap. Weeds is its best series to date--funny, absurd, relevant and featuring uber-MILF Mary-Louise Parker. Prepare for the crappy live-action Underdog movie with the classic Underdog cartoons. Keeley Hazell's zoomers enliven a mannered, should-have-remained-a-short Cashback. Speaking of zoomers--nude, female French wrestlers? Yes, please!

Mon 5/8 – The Submarines / Goldspot @ Viper Room ($10) – The Submarines debut album doesn’t come out until 6/20 but you can sample some tracks on their website or on Myspace. The album has call and response boy/girl lyrics about the two singers’ relationship (both the breakup and reunion). The electronic blips call to mind the Stars and some Folk Implosion. Her voice is in the neighborhood of the woman from Mates of State. Goldspot is a big Nic Harcourt band. If you prefer underground rap go see Soul Position at the Echo.

The American Cinematheque presents a double feature of Reese Witherspoon in "Vanity Fair" (2004) and Alexander Payne's "Election" (1999). A discussion with Ms. Witherspoon will take place between films.
