Skiers and snowboarders, the long-awaited time of year has come to strap on your gear, hit the slopes and brave that frozen white stuff. As of Wednesday, November 23, the three main ski/snowboarding resorts in the San Bernardino Mountains - Bear Mountain, Snow Summit and Snow Valley - will be open for shredding.
'Tis the Season for SoCal Snow, Mountain Resorts Open Slopes
Roving Mammoth Smuggles Burritos So You Don't Have To
It's known amongst California snow birds that while San Francisco and Sacramento snow sport enthusiasts flock to Tahoe, Angelenos looking for more ski-able real estate flock to Mammoth. If your commitment is intact, the choice is clear: The five-to-sixish hour drive rewards you with Mammoth Mountain's over 3500 acres.
I couldn't be more surprised, then, that it wasn't a local resort but Mammoth that took cues straight out of Los Angeles culture. Or could I?
Mountain High: Ain't Enough Room On the Slopes Today
There might be chaos down here in Los Angeles, but it was the perfect storm for skiers and snowboarders to take to the slopes in Wrightwood at Mountain High, where all three of the resorts had to stop selling admission at 8:30 this morning, just a half hour after the slopes opened for the day's runs.

Need a Getaway? Mammoth Has Foot of Fresh Snow, Loads of Specials
Black Friday burnout? Couch Potato syndrome? If you are thinking about escaping the clutches of Los Angeles, the folks at Mammoth Mountain would be happy to see you. Early this morning @MammothMountain Tweeted: "12" of fresh snow at Main Lodge this morning; more snow expected throughout the day!" This is thanks to the blustery weather system that crept down the state overnight and brought a little (early) winter white to our mountain sides.
Goodbye, Rain; Hello, Heat
As we have been saying, if you're not heading up to Mammoth to ski, you'll be down here for the expected hot temps this weekend. The moderate rainstorm of the past couple days is creeping away and the heat is coming back. Expect temperatures from the 70s to even maybe the low 90s, depending on where you live (beachside, valleyside?). And as nice as the weather will be, is it a good idea to go swimming in the ocean? Some say not after the rain.

Rain, Snow & Chilly Temps for an LA December
Don't forget that umbrella on the way out the door today -- it's gonna rain (yes, that is an intentional Steve Reich reference). Right now, surfers should be enjoying the best swells of the week and skiers can look forward to a nice snowpack of "about 6 inches of snow at elevations of about 6,000 feet," according to the LA Times. As always, with the good, comes the bad. Among the more strenuous commute and...
