Yesterday at a press conference with Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard regarding the renewal of a Sister City relationship, Mayor Villaraigosa went off topic, but with good reason: water woes could be ahead, according to the Daily News. With the fires, extreme water drought and light snowpack this year, water is tight. Earlier this summer, the mayor made a call for the public to voluntarily reduce water use, hoping for a 10% decrease (even...

For the last two and a half years, Michael Higby has been the editor of Mayor Sam's Sister City, one of Los Angeles' best known and most controversial blog covering municipal politics. He is also the alter ego of the blog's chief writer, the lovable "dead, Republican Mayor," Sam Yorty, which is based on the late Los Angeles Mayor who served during the 1960s and 1970s. Higby has been a community activist in the...
- South LA is just full of socially conscious news right now as a group of parents are banding together to improve conditions at area schools.
- And, finally, Dakota Fanning -- who shares top billing with Robert De Niro and Tom Cruise -- also shares tagalongs and samoas with the Chatsworth Girl Scouts.
That seems to be the question of the day with an area high school losing its accreditation for the first time in 30 years. Martini Republic's LA blog and Mayor Sam's Sister City both want to know how Crenshaw High School has been allowed to get so bad. Crenshaw High's website doesn't have any information about what the school is doing to regain accreditation and LAUSD's Budget Board Meeting tomorrow doesn't appear to have the school on its agenda (or any information on its website for concerned parents about what losing accreditation means, how it will effect their students, particularly those graduating this next school year, or how they are addressing the problem) so the question remains: How does a school with 2 magnet programs (a gifted program and a teacher training program -- no, the irony isn't lost on us) and a home page claiming "We're Number One" fail its students this badly?
William H. Parker joined the LAPD on August 8, 1927. After serving 15 years with the Department, Captain Parker took a leave of absence to serve his country in Word War II. After the war, Captain Parker returned to the Department where he rapidly ascended through the ranks. He was appointed Chief of Police on August 9, 1950, and served as such until July 16, 1966, when he died as a result of a heart attack. Chief Parker is credited with bringing the LAPD to the forefront as a world renowned law enforcement agency.
In the past week, we've noticed some pretty cool stuff going on with blogs around town. LAblogs, currently on hiatus, has launched a wiki about the city that we can all add to. LA Voice launched LA Vision, which seems awfully ambitious and one of the few community video projects we've seen. Mayor Sam's Sister City broke a local politics story that got them in all the local papers and on CNN today and it isn't part of their blog network but LA.com launched a car tips newsletter that features a very cool tip that we won't tell you about because we want those spaces for ourselves but Franklin Avenue will.
Richard Alarcon: Cha Cha Cha in Encino
Bob Hertzberg released his first campaign ad to a variety of reviews. Boi from Troy says “Message gets an "A" but the imagery gets a kinda-spooky "C",” while there are a variety of comments, positive and negative, on Mayor Sam’s Sister City blog.
After complaints at Mayor Sam’s Sister City and the relaunched West L.A. Online blog about the lack of news (and websites) in the LA City Council District 11 race, we have a sudden spate of updates.
The City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works has issued a "helpful" FAQ for those playing at home and has scheduled a slew of community meetings (see below for the list) to explain the changes.
