Concert Review: Billy Joel @ Honda Center, 2/23/08

I’m not ashamed to admit that somewhere among my Jon Brion, Of Montreal and Vampire Weekend albums, you’ll find a bunch of Billy Joel CDs. Although I wasn’t even born when he first hit the airwaves, I’ve always had a soft spot for his music. Since I didn’t get to see him perform during the days when he was releasing and performing new music, I was excited for the opportunity to see him Saturday night in Anaheim. more ›

TV Junkie: Wednesday

Idol-heads and Runway-heads have a lot to celebrate tonight and I'll be damned, look at how busy the schedule is in the 10:00-11:00pm time frame. Since I don't think any of the options are fantastic is it better to have a little or a lot of mediocrity to choose from? more ›

Dani Miura, Actress, To Catch a Predator

Dani Miura, Actress, To Catch a Predator

To Catch A Predator is one of the more intriguing shows to come around in past years, and certainly one that's sparked its fair share of debates. A group known as Perverted Justice goes into Internet chat rooms posing as young teens and engages in conversation with potential pedophiles. After a while, the offer is made for the targets to come over and a meeting time is set. Unbeknownst to the subjects, the person that they're really meeting is an actor or actress, known as the bait, who brings them into the home where they are interviewed by NBC's Chris Hansen before being arrested. The program has proven to be quite successful, both in the amount of arrests and in terms of ratings. more ›

I'm Training for the Los Angeles Marathon

I'm Training for the Los Angeles Marathon

Let me start off by saying that I don’t particularly enjoy running. No matter what, during the first ten minutes of my run I feel like I’m about to die. Afterwards, my legs can get so sore it hurts to even walk. Nevertheless, I easily get stressed out from life and work and running helps relieve the tension. Ultimately, it makes me feel good and that's why I continue to do it. more ›

A Weekend Getaway at Costanoa

A Weekend Getaway at Costanoa

Located one hour south of San Francisco and 45 minutes from San Jose Airport, Costanoa Coastal Lodge and Camp is a self-penned “eco adventure resort” located in Pescadero, Calif. The relaxing vacation spot uses sustainable methods to run their operation, from recycling to choosing local produce for the California coastal cuisine they serve in the restaurant. There’s free wi-fi but cell phone service was (fortunately) sparse. To get there, you have to take Highway 1 at some point. For those who’ve never done the drive, a deep look at the beautiful coastline is enough to melt any travel stress away. Since I didn't have time to drive the whole way, my boyfriend and I opted to take a flight after work Friday from Burbank to San Jose and flew back Sunday evening. Our friends from San Francisco picked us up at the airport in San Jose and we were on our way. more ›

Wilco @ The Greek, 08/29/07

Wilco @ The Greek, 08/29/07

Last night Jeff Tweedy and the boys of Wilco performed a stellar two hour long set at the Greek. Since I had a wall pass, I had the pleasure of people watching and I must say that Wilco fans are happy folk. Singing along and even dancing at times, the fans were enraptured by the incredible musicianship. The bashful yet charismastic Jeff Tweedy led the crowd through a set comprised of half Sky Blue... more ›

Twenty-one Albums to Look Forward to

Twenty-one Albums to Look Forward to

Summer has passed and acts such as Suzanne Vega, Tegan and Sara, M.I.A., Spoon, and Rilo Kiley have reclaimed the spotlight after significant hiatuses, but the year is far from over. It’s now time to look forward to albums on the horizon that look like winners already: more ›

John Amaechi @ Barnes & Noble at the Grove, 7/10

John Amaechi @ Barnes & Noble at the Grove, 7/10

First off this LAist was running late this morning and left his camera at home. Since I had to go to the Grove straight from work to make it on time, there is no photo of the event. No photo of me planting John Amaechi a wet sloppy kiss. So sorry folks. Amaechi’s appearance at Barnes & Noble at the Grove concluded his whirlwind promotional tour for his memoir Man in the Middle which... more ›

why I hate white pants

why I hate white pants

Since it appears that some of my prior posts have infuriated readers enough to call me something along the lines of "a poison to society," I have come to realize that I must be extremely influential and powerful in my role of (as one person called me), "Queen of the Retards." Otherwise, people wouldn't be so upset, would they? They would shake their heads and say "moron" and click on one of the other,... more ›

John Legend and Corinne Bailey Rae @ UCI, 4/3

John Legend and Corinne Bailey Rae @ UCI, 4/3

John Legend and Corinne Bailey Rae kicked off their 33-date US tour at UCI’s Bren Events Center on Tuesday night, reuniting two of the young stars who (along with Mr. Jessica Simpson John Mayer) delivered a poignant sleepy set at February’s Grammy Awards. In contrast to that milquetoast performance, Legend and CBR gave a lively three-hour show which even got the normally subdued Orange County crowd on its feet. In this current era of... more ›

Life on the E-Campaign Trail: Why Didn't You Vote?

Life on the E-Campaign Trail: Why Didn't You Vote?

Since I was hired to work on one of the LAUSD campaigns as an e-mail marketer, I have been keeping my mouth shut on this blog about it. And I am not going to sit here and tell you why you should vote for my candidate in the runoff election or am I really going to talk about "life on the e-campaign trail," but I am going to tell you that this election was... more ›

Curse of the Singles Table

Curse of the Singles Table

So I’ve made it through wedding season without any visible scars. Since I’ve just recently begun my twenty-something rite of passage through these events, I’ve only been to a handful and yes, I’ve been seated at the “singles” table at each and every one. For the most part, I’ve been seated with my girlfriends and other “singles” I knew. Of course there was smattering of the random cousins from Kentucky, the divorced single Dad, and the sixteen-year old family friend, but hey, nothing's perfect. more ›

Small Talk: Andrew Choate; Killradio DJ & Author

Andrew Choate has a pretty interesting Southern accent, has a crazy good book that comes with a CD and he plays good music on his show at Killradio. We thought we'd talk to him before his show tonight at 9 p.m. where he will be focusing on Swedish hip-hop. more ›

Scarlett Johansson to Sing Tom Waits Songs

Scarlett Johansson to Sing Tom Waits Songs

In what could be the best cd in a long time, or the most laughable, Fox News is reporting that Esquire's Sexiest Woman Alive is negotiating with Rhino Records to record an album of Tom Waits covers. Scarlett Johansson, who earlier this month fell from a horse while filming "The Other Boleyn Girl" in England, is going to jump into the ring with the likes of Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, J-Lo, and Juliette Lewis... more ›

Living In Sin: Kick Out the Cling On

Every week in Living in Sin, Jen Sincero provides advice to LA's sexually confounded. You can see her column in print in the LA Alternative Press, or have it sent to you every week by ">signing up for her newsletter. Ask Jen your questions: all are posted anonymously. Dear Jen, I finally got the guts to go on my first girl-girl date. It started out really well, but then she kept wanting to drag... more ›

Looking Back on LAist 1.0

Looking Back on LAist 1.0

Since I post most of my entries at night, it's fitting that the last task before going to bed includes an acknowledgement of this blog's first year anniversary. I'm thrilled that we made it to this milestone without getting sued (so far). We couldn't have done it without all the great writers who have contributed their thoughts, time and patience. We're glad to be around and really appreciate the dialogues we've hosted in the comments section. LAist wouldn't exist without its readers. Thank you. more ›
