Sad news, East siders! As of January 14th, Back Door Bakery is officially closed. Although the bakery has been at 1710 Silver Lake Blvd for 17 years, this past December the landlord for the building provided BDB 30 days notice to leave the premises. But all is not lost. While at the bakery on Sunday, I overheard one of the employees tell a customer that Back Door Bakery is currently in the midst of finding a new location and would keep everyone posted via their Myspace page.
Tonight at the Jazz Bakery is the The Alternative String Group, an ensemble of students from Robert Anderson and Jacob Szekely's music school in West Hollywood, The String Project | Los Angeles. Both studio musicians who have worked with the likes of the Dakah Hip-Hop Orchestra and SuperNova, the two have put together a conservatory that is pretty high tech with their interactive music lessons, recording and filming them for student's personal analysis... Finally, the viola gets some respect. The concert will feature solo and small group performances of music by legends such as The Grateful Dead, Jay-Z, Thelonious Monk, Carlos Santana, U2, Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, and more. The anticipated LA MILL COFFEE boutique opened this morning in Silver Lake on its eponymous boulevard between Sunset and the Reservoir (they close at 6 p.m. tonight and are only serving bar drinks and clovers until then). Eater LA takes in the decor: "Custom-made French wallpaper, faux crocodile, ostrich and sharkskin chairs in dark teal, sky blue and red, black Lucite tables. A dramatic brass chandelier hangs in the main room." Definitely not a place safe for vegans. Actually, the menu isn't either.
Curbed LA is reporting that Silver Lake Meadow will open as a park, likely this summer.
The compromised plan opens a portion of the meadow--three and half acres--to the public, while the remainder of the meadow, another three acres, will be reserved for wildlife and native plants: coyotes, blue herons, gnats, ladybugs, etc. The whole opening/not fully opening of the meadow has been a touchy subject for some Silver Lake residents, who worry hordes of visitors will descend to this relatively quiet area. [Curbed LA]Addressing those concerns, the city is looking into putting a signalized crosswalk on Silver Lake Blvd. and deciding on the public hours of use and rules.
During the six years relocated Clevelanders Biblical Proof of UFOs haunted the dives of Los Angeles, they made my world a better place. This one band brought so many of my favorite things in the same package. They had a simply colossal sound, shape-shifting between glacial-pace Black Sabbath grind and Who-like momentum, powered by memorable tunes and sweetened with angelic vocal harmonies. They could step on any stage, in any room, with lousy acoustics...
LA is home to dozens of classic, independent, badass rock clubs. Many of these clubs helped launch most of your favorite groups. But those bands would have never made it on stage if it wasn't for the booker, the person who actually hires the bands to play the show on the particular date. Wednesday we introduced you to Patrick from Safari Sam's. Today we are very happy to share with you the all caps...
LAist has a pair of tickets to see NYC garage-rock marvel The Mooney Suzuki tonight at Spaceland. This is their only Los Angeles stop as they tour the planet promoting their long awaited, and charmingly less convulsive 4th studio record, Have Mercy (Elixia). For those who like raucous swagger with their 60s-Brit flavored, hand-clappin’, guitar rock, just register to leave a comment, and leave your favorite anagram for 'SPACELAND' in the comments. My fav is...
With global warming so topical these days, it’s fitting that non-profit research center Materials & Applications (M&A) offers a new outdoor installation in the form of an igloo. Tucked between boutiques and buildings along Silver Lake Blvd., the igloo is made not by ice and snow, but by bamboo and industrial felt. Titled Igloo/Ukendt, the structure was created by Danish artist Anja Franke, architect John Southern and lead fabricator Nick Blake. The team yearned to construct a cold weather building with techniques and warm climate materials appropriate to Southern California. Igloo/Ukendt mixes themes of tropical and arctic, hot and cold, showing us the times are a-changing with our climate.
Los Angeles could really use more public parks, don't you think? Some good folks in Silver Lake do, and they're hoping to do something about it. Maybe you'd like to help them. See, there are two really fantastic little bodies of water in the Silver Lake/Los Feliz corner of the city - the Ivanhoe Reservoir and the Silver Lake Reservoir. The problem is, they and their surrounding properties are fenced off from the public....
We blame Materials & Applications for the regular traffic jams on Silver Lake Blvd. between Effie and Sunset. Anybody who sets up golden Mylar gravity holes and enormous bamboo cocoons along a regular commuting route is going to create a bottleneck. We can hardly be angry for the delay once we drive by whatever amazing and beautiful project they've cooked up, however, and we'd implore anyone else on that route to take a moment like we have to park the car and really soak up what's going on in that little lot between some rather unassuming apartment buildings.
Some people get long weekends, so this one's for you, lucky ducks.
So we're in denial about the news that several of our favorite spots in LA are slated for closure (and we bid adieu to Southern California retail institutions, the Robinson-May stores-our first job was working in the linen department at Robinson's Pasadena). Two of which will close their doors after July.
