"Drama in Sunset Junction. Police line up and lots of cop cars racing in circles up and down the streets," twittered Jeff Nicholas about his Silver Lake neighborhood last night. That's because around 7 p.m., a man's body was found in the middle of the 1100 block of Manzanita Street with a gun laying 15 feet away from him. It was first reported that he was possibly shot in the head, but ABC7 confirms "that the injury was not a gunshot wound." Nicholas later twittered "no gunshots heard around here." more ›

Last fall we heard about plans Arnaud Ozharun, owner of Natural Mind Beauty & Beyond on Sunset Boulevard in Silver Lake, had to convert the exterior of his business into a vertical garden. This weekend we caught some of the installation in process, as vibrant greenery was being set into small pockets all up and down the outside of the building--a total of 20,000 will eventually be in place in the vertical garden, which Ozharun said he hopes will look "like Amazonia." Head to Silver Lake and check it out! more ›

Controversy is brewing in Silver Lake over a mural by Phil Lumbang on a private residence, Jesus Sanchez at EastsiderLA is finding. Most everyone loves the artwork, but one neighborhood complained to the city which in turn said it was illegal, asking for homeowners Amy Seidenwurm and Russell Bates to take it down. Councilman Eric Garcetti likes the mural and is seeing what can be done. Meanwhile, Lumbang makes a great point: "I guess the deal is you can't have a mural on private residential property or some bs like that. I guess it's on the same guide lines as shop keepers maintaining a clean facade with no graffiti." The mural must be removed by March 1st and is being enforced under the city's outdoor advertisement law. more ›

We've done breakfast at LA Mill before, and the menu has remained generally the same, which means if you know what you like there, chances are you'll be able to get it. And even though our LA "cold snap" is already a distant memory and we're back to watching the palm trees nod in the sunny breezes, our ingredients still have seasonality, which is why LA Mill's Butternut Squash Polenta made for the perfect December breakfast the other day when we stopped by the Silver Lake coffee boutique to pick up some gift beans (yes, we take our own advice). more ›

In an LA Times article about the Key Club shutting its doors--apparently for remodeling--neighbor and owner of The Roxy Nic Adler talks about the scene going on further east on Sunset: "The Eastside is a strong market... Their community really participates. The artists live there. The clubs are down the street, and people don't have to worry about parking. Our community in West Hollywood moved out. We've been battling that." The upcoming documentary East of Sunset explores the burgeoning scene. more ›

As of 3 p.m., Jeremy Swan's attempt to break the world record for "most tattoos done in 24 hours" was around half way there with about 400 tats completed. He needs to complete over 802 tattoos total. Although hundreds poured in to his Silver Lake-based Broken Art Tattoo at midnight, the rate of people coming in during this morning slowed significantly. However, this afternoon, progress picked up and is expected to continue as night settles. If you want to get one yourself, there's still time--you just need to be inked before midnight. That's local geography according to Hollywood film editing, at least. Michael Schneider at Franklin Avenue has been following ABC's FlashFoward closely, debunking the show's geography with real geography, which is always amusing. "The two characters in this car had been downtown at the Coroner's Office. They found a clue and decided to head to Silver Lake. So they drive... down Fairfax, in front of the old Johnie's at Wilshire and Fairfax," he writes. Later, trick-or-treating in the West Valley quickly turns into a scene at the Hollywood Forever Cemetary. Also, in this world of L.A., there is no MTA, it's the UTA, as in Urban Transit Authority. more ›

Back in 2007, L.A. Ink's Kat Von D broke the world record for "most tattoos done in 24 hours." That record was soon shattered within six months in Texas and then again in Arizona. Now, the next attempt to break it will be back here locally this Friday, beginning at midnight. more ›

Last night during rush hour an MTA bus collided with a private vehicle near 1959 N. Glendale Boulevard and the 2 Freeway. "According to Officer Gregory Baek of the Los Angeles Police Department, the No. 92 bus was driving northbound just before the freeway ramp when the accident occurred," explains LA Now. As a result, 19 people suffered injuries, of which 10 "were taken to the hospital," and of those, one "was reported to be in critical condition," according to CBS2. The other nine injuries were described as being "as minor to moderate." Police are currently investigating the cause of the crash, however Sgt. Gregory Hoyte of the Central Traffic Division notes that "the driver seemed to have lost control of the bus and hit the middle divider [also going Northbound on the road] and another object before crashing into the car." more ›

Sean MacPherson, the man behind some of L.A.'s most popular bars, announced today that his Hollywood-Los Feliz-Silver Lake neighborhood hang, the Good Luck Bar, will celebrate its 15th birthday later this month. On Thursday, November 19, DJ Travis Keller and Chinese burlesque dancers will entertain patrons as they guzzle down $5.00 Stolichnaya, Sailor Jerry, Cazadores, or Jack Daniel's cocktails and selected beers for $2.00 beers (plus: Kogi BBQ will be outside). In 1994, MacPherson took over the space, formerly a Mexican transvestite bar, and based it on his favorite Chinatown bar, Yee Mee Loo, which closed its doors after 40 years.
