MTA Bus and Car Collide in Silver Lake Last Night, 19 Injured

Last night during rush hour an MTA bus collided with a private vehicle near 1959 N. Glendale Boulevard and the 2 Freeway. "According to Officer Gregory Baek of the Los Angeles Police Department, the No. 92 bus was driving northbound just before the freeway ramp when the accident occurred," explains LA Now. As a result, 19 people suffered injuries, of which 10 "were taken to the hospital," and of those, one "was reported to be in critical condition," according to CBS2. The other nine injuries were described as being "as minor to moderate." Police are currently investigating the cause of the crash, however Sgt. Gregory Hoyte of the Central Traffic Division notes that "the driver seemed to have lost control of the bus and hit the middle divider [also going Northbound on the road] and another object before crashing into the car."

Good Luck Bar to Celebrate its 15th Birthday

Sean MacPherson, the man behind some of L.A.'s most popular bars, announced today that his Hollywood-Los Feliz-Silver Lake neighborhood hang, the Good Luck Bar, will celebrate its 15th birthday later this month. On Thursday, November 19, DJ Travis Keller and Chinese burlesque dancers will entertain patrons as they guzzle down $5.00 Stolichnaya, Sailor Jerry, Cazadores, or Jack Daniel's cocktails and selected beers for $2.00 beers (plus: Kogi BBQ will be outside). In 1994, MacPherson took over the space, formerly a Mexican transvestite bar, and based it on his favorite Chinatown bar, Yee Mee Loo, which closed its doors after 40 years. For the past two weeks, Brooklyn-based street artist Dan Witz has been in Los Angeles. And although he's put up about 20 pieces throughout Echo Park, Silver Lake, Hollywood and West Hollywood, he's not about to give away their locations.

Silver Lake Art Crawl: Also a Food Truck Crawl?

The Silver Lake Art Crawl begins tonight with a series of events through Sunday. The majority of art gallery openings are happening Saturday night, but on Sunday, when the "Official Silver Lake Art Crawl Party at Barnsdall Art Park" occurs, a handful of food trucks will arrive to cater.

Tonight: Prop 8 Protest from Hollywood to Silver Lake

One year ago tonight, thousands of disappointed voters hit the streets to protest the passing of Prop 8 which banned gay marriage in California. Tonight, people will gather again.

Silver Lake to get a New Library This Month*

When Los Angeles' 72nd library branch opens in two weeks, it will be the first for Silver Lake. Located near the corner of Silver Lake and Glendale boulevards, the 13,600-square-foot facility was built to Gold LEED standards and includes new technology not seen before in L.A.'s system.

'Ironic Hipster Bar' Stinkers to Celebrate 1 Year

Has it been a year already? The "Eastside's" most loved/hated bar, Stinkers Truck Stop, will celebrate its one-year anniversary this Sunday evening with drink specials and swag including, wait for it, air-fresheners and hats. For those who remember, an LAist post last year about the bar became quite heated in the comments section. One year later, we're curious if this place is still ironic.

Julian Casablancas Moves to Silver Lake

It may be a temporary move from NYC, but the frontman of The Strokes is loving our city. He tells the New York Times: “It’s fun; I won’t lie. L.A.’s kind of, like, seven really cool towns. It’s so laid-back. If you go in the right spot, you can walk around, and you don’t need a car. It’s a lot easier to eat healthy. And the weather!” (via torrmoz)

The Silver Lake Art Crawl is Back

The monthly art walks in downtown bring out the large crowds, but that's not to say there are not a concentration of galleries elsewhere. Hence the return of the Silver Lake Art Crawl, now in its second year.

Large Vertical Garden Slated for Silver Lake

This is one trend we hope to see spread around Los Angeles. Hopefully Arnaud Ozharun, owner of Natural Mind Beauty & Beyond on Sunset Boulevard, can inspire the city. After working with the city through permitting issues, it looks like Ozharun will be able to start planting soon, finds Jesus Sanchez at The Eastsider LA. Some 20,000 plants will cover the wall, now donned in soft purple fabric where thousands of seeds will be planted. "It will be like Amazonia," said Ozharun. About that Boring Adam Goldberg Hating on L.A. Movie

Have you seen this yet? If not, don't worry. But just in case you need to hear Adam Goldberg explain how restaurants in Silver Lake suck (dude, we dig Edendale Grill's Secret 3-Cheese Delight, savvy?) and how Franklin Avenue is difficult to cross, here you go. Thankfully, Goldberg admits his bitching consists of "bourgeois problems" and that this is all in good fun. The vid is in promotion of his NYC-based flick called (untitled).

Guide for Going Green between Echo Park to Atwater Village

From compost at Griffith Park to Silver Lake Salvage to amazing raw desserts at Cru, Your Daily Thread has put together a nice Neighborhood Green Guide "to navigate what is green, local, sustainable, organic and/or handmade in the areas of Atwater Village, Echo Park, Los Feliz and Silver Lake." The daily local green e-mail newsletter says more neighborhood guides are on the way. We hope they do downtown or the Southeast Valley next.

Eye Nosh: Brunching at Silver Lake's Reservoir

It's that time again: Weekend breakfast. Or, if you prefer: Brunch. May we tempt you with this Eye Nosh-able shot of the Ricotta Pancakes with Lemon Creme Fraiche and Blueberry Sauce, Side of Seasonal Fruit and Maple Syrup enjoyed by food blogger and LAist Featured Photos pool contributor LA & OC Foodventures? Need some words to go with your picture? How about this, from his blog report

If you like music, you're going to see a lot of familiar faces seen in this trailer for East of Sunset, which has no set release date yet. We don't believe that West Hollywood's Sunset Strip is totally dead (it's been making a nice comeback over the past year), but we can't wait to see this flick, which is still in post-production with Thrillhouse Productions (h/t web in front).

Earlier this month, the Rock 'N Roll Summer Circus took place at The Echoplex, hosted by Eli Chartkoff from The Monolators with main stage performances by Marvelous Toy, The Flying Tourbillon Orchestra, Fol Chen, and The Henry Clay People as well as sideshows by the Natural Disasters, Downtown/Union, The Damselles, Les Blanks, and Roadside Graves.

As Sunset Junction Day 2 starts to wind down, everyone gets a relief from the sun with a slight breeze and some cloud cover. Bands like Build an Ark and Arrested Development make the corner of Santa Monica and Sunset Boulavard just a bit more cooler with their east coast brand of funk.

Sun-drenched hipsters meet local families as they collide onto Sunset Junction for indie music and danger dogs. Day one photos.

Recession Obsession: Breakfast Sandwiches

I hail from a land where the Breakfast Sandwich is King (and not the one that comes from the Burger's King.) In the Northeast there's a serious Breakfast Sandwich culture and its hub is a chain for which LA's East Coast transplants bemoan longing: Dunkin Donuts. Their morning formula is simple. Egg, cheese, and breakfast meat gets wedged in a croissant, bagel or an English muffin. It's a great way to start your day.

ATTN Silver Lake: How to Get Your Sunset Junction Wristbands

The loved and hated Sunset Junction Street Festival is this weekend and as part of the deal with the city to get the event permitted was to give free admission for immediate neighbors of the area. Residents must stop by the Tsunami Cafe tomorrow and Wednesday between noon and 7 p.m., present a California's ID or driver's license plus a utility bill proving residence in the blocks surrounding the festival (list below), according to the LA Weekly via the Silver Lake Improvement Association. "Residents who cannot make it to Tsunami Cafe during those times can contact SJNA "no later the Monday, August 17" to make arrangements. SJNA can be reached at sunsetjunction@sunsetjunction.org or 323-661-7771," explains the Weekly.

In Silver Lake: 'It’s kind of an American Apparel ad come to life'

You can thank Terence McFarland, the executive director of the Los Angeles Stage Alliance, for that fantastic quote about Sweaty Sundays (and Wet Wednesdays), a popular updated Richard Simmons dance exercise class " to a soundtrack of indie rock, techno, and 1980s new wave hits new wave" in Silver Lake. The New York Times takes an interest--"Silver Lake, a hipster neighborhood in Los Angeles"--while Gawker ponders if Williamsburg hipsters in Brooklyn can step up to the challenge.

Suspects 'Terrorized' Silver Lake Clerk in Sunset Blvd. Robbery

One morning two weeks ago, a clerk at Daisy's Market was tied up as two suspects robbed the store and police yesterday released screenshots of them from video surveillance. It was 9:40 a.m. on Wednesday, July 15th when the first suspect entered the store at 3214 Sunset Blvd.. He bought something and then left.

Nearly 75 people yesterday joined Dan Koeppel and friends on the first of two days in The Big Parade, a 40-mile walk from downtown to the Hollywood Sign up and down more one hundred neighborhood stair cases. They begin the last leg of their journey this morning after camping in a Silver Lake pocket park next to the Music Box Stairs.

Eye Nosh: Burgers at The Fix in Silver Lake

The Fix Burger in Silver Lake is enjoying their first summer in business, after opening last fall to mostly rave reviews. They've got all sorts of specialty burgers on the menu, and can serve you up a patty made of beef, buffalo, turkey, or even ostrich. Yelpers hoot about their garlic or sweet potato fries, as well as their shakes, and just how well-cooked the burgers are--no matter what the meat.

Proposal Seeks to have Sunset Junction Festival Free for 3 Zip Codes

Unless Sunset Junction Festival organizers address local resident concerns and businesses, the festival is unlikely to be permitted by the city. So far, the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council, who represents the area at a grassroots neighborhood level, has voted against the festival in its entirety. For their meeting tomorrow, the agenda (.pdf) lists has a motion for consideration that seeks to alleviate some of those concerns:

Silver Lake Walking Man Mural Spotted

A mural depicting Dr. Marc Abrams, otherwise known as the Silver Lake Walking Man, has been spotted by Mark Lisanti. The mural, found on Sunset Blvd. abut Local, a restaurant, is by Nicky Gagliarducci and focuses on the local scene. Back in 2004, Abrams told a local reporter about his route (.pdf): "I usually loop around the lake, and then go down West Silverlake to Rowena, and then Hyperion, and then Griffith Park Blvd. down Sunset, back down Silverlake to the reservoir, and then back and loop around the lake again. So it’s about 15 miles altogether." Back in 2007, LAist interviewed the Silver Lake Five Dollar Guy. (via Curbed LA)

The annual Dyke Day L.A. march and celebration took place Saturday, moving from the top of the hill in Barnsdall Art Park to Edgecliff Dr in Silver Lake. "Dyke Day L.A. is a day in the park for all self-identified dykes and allies, including gay families, transgender dykes, and dykes of all ages. The mission of Dyke Day L.A. is to create an inclusive space that brings together the past, present, and future of our east side Los Angeles dyke community," explains their Facebook contingency.

Seven Questions with Christine D’Abrosca, Beverage Director at Malo

In an effort to get to know some of those characters a little better, we've created "Seven Questions with..." If you have a suggestion for a future Seven Questions subject send us an email.

In Search of True Identify: Eastside Vs. Eastside

You've got the original Eastside--LA city neighborhoods east of the LA River including unincorporated East LA--and you've got the newish Eastside--Silver Lake, Los Feliz, Echo Park--battling it out for their title. Tomorrow in the LA Times a feature, which is already posted online, dives into the issue head on:
