Tonight In Rock: Black Francis, SUNN O))), The Voyeurs, Signal Hill

Tonight famed Pixies front man Frank Black will be performing under his stage name Black Francis at the Mint. Seattle-bred drone metal outfit SUNN O))) are poised to annihilate eardrums at Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock. And, lastly, LAist's favorite instrumental act Signal Hill will be performing at Echo Curio with the Littlest Viking and Beware of Safety. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Echo to catch local indie rock duo the Voyeurs (LAist Interview), who will be ringing in a new video for their leading single "Things People Say." Box Violet and Kissing Cousins are slated to kick things off.

Tonight In Rock: Peaches, Holy Fuck, Fool's Gold, Signal Hill

Tonight Toronto-based electronica musician Peaches will be taking on a two-night stint at the Henry Fonda Music Box. And speaking of Toronto, electronica band Holy Fuck are poised to rock the Troubadour with LAist favorites Crocodiles (LAist Interview) in tow. And, lastly, LA-based afro-centric indie pop act Fool's Gold will be performing at 3 Clubs with Abe Vigoda and Thee Makeout Party in tow. But we strongly suggest heading over to the hole-and-corner Pehrspace to catch local experimental instrumental outfit Signal Hill (LAist Review), who will be ringing in their debut full-length More After We're Gone. LA-based rockers Beware of Safety are slated to kick things off. And please, for the love of Pehrspace, keep the noise to a minimum!

Tonight In Rock: Iglu & Hartly, Avi Buffalo, Mike Doughty, Signal Hill

Tonight "pretend-gay, LA surf-rock in-joke" Iglu & Hartly will be ringing in their latest disc at the Roxy with Pop Noir in tow. Soul Coughing front man Mike Doughty is poised to headline the Hotel Café. And, lastly, experimental instrumental outfit Signal Hill will be gracing the Silver Lake Lounge. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Echo to catch local indie rock duo Avi Buffalo (LAist Interview). LA-by-way-of-Austin folk rock maestros Tenlons Fort (LAist Review, #2, #3) are slated to open.

Tonight In Rock: Dave Rawlings, Becky Stark, Mia Doi Todd, Signal Hill

Tonight one of LAist's favorite local singer-songwriters Mia Doi Todd will be performing at the Echo. LA-based instrumental quartet Signal Hill are slated to perform at the Bootleg Theater. And, lastly, Lavender Diamond front woman Becky Stark will be gracing the Little Room at Largo at the Coronet. But we strongly suggest checking into the main room at Largo at the Coronet to catch bluegrass troubadour Gillian Welch and her longtime musical partner Dave Rawlings. Led Zeppelin multi-instrumentalist John Paul Jones is slated to join on the mandolin.

Wearing a symbol of your crime on your chest for all to see is at least as old a punishment as Hawthorne's Scarlet Letter, and this old school-style discipline is making a comeback.

Carter Tanton of Tulsa always gets rave reviews about his voice like this one from Pitchfork: "Lead singer Carter Tanton has a spectacular voice... [he] could probably sing a recipe for chocolate éclairs and still make it sound good." And Rolling Stone said "his indie-seraphim voice is not of this world." Both reviews referenced the similarities to My Morning Jacket. And not to forget the band, the Boston Phoenix, their hometown paper, said "we weren’t the only ones who walked out of the club convinced that we had just seen the best rock band in Boston."

I've always been intrigued by other "best of" lists, but this year I decided to take it to a whole new level. I e-mailed a handful of bands that I've seen this past year in order to unearth what exactly captivated them in '07. As music listeners, it is our duty to take a keen interest in our favorite musician's influences. After all, they rocked our little world, might as well see what rocked their...

Signal Hill opened the show with an impassioned instrumental set. Lush layering of clean plucking driven by busy bass lines and punchy drums comprise Signal Hill's sound. Crowd pleasers like 'This New Year's Absence' exuded unbearable pangs of passion. I haven't felt this moved by an instrumental band since Explosions In The Sky and the mere comparison speaks volumes about their worthiness. Signal Hill performs remarkably poignant instrumental rock that grasps your attention and never ceases to let go.

When Rep. Juanita Millender-McDonald began a six-week leave of absence Wednesday after being diagnosed with cancer, no one expect that Sunday there would be obituaries being written for the seven-term congresswoman. Rep. Millender-McDonald, the first African American woman to head the House Administration Committee, easily won her district (California's 37th congressional district) in last year's election by 82%. She lobbied to ban smoking in the Speaker's Lobby off the House floor, a request that was...

Why Queen is messing with around with any other singer than Mika is an exercise in futility. Paul Rodgers? Are you kidding me? And he writes good songs, good enough to get picked up by Motorola's red campaign (see the video after the jump). Queen needs to sign this guy up and fast.

Though there has been considerable attention paid to the issue, LAist thought it noteworthy that yesterday's vote by the Board of Supervisors resulted in an ACLU victory.
