Winds of Change A-Blowin': Pine Tree Wind Project

On Thursday, a groundbreaking ceremony was held a few miles north of Mojave for the country's largest city-owned windfarm. The Pine Tree Wind Project is Los Angeles' hope for the future of power, supplying 120 megawatts of renewable energy to our city. In fact, Mayor Villaraigosa, who attended the event and who has been working on ways to make energy more green and efficient, says "20 percent of the city's energy will come from renewable sources by the year 2010" (Daily News). more ›

LA Residents Asked to Cut Down on Shower Time

LA Residents Asked to Cut Down on Shower Time

In the midst of our driest rain season to date, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is urging the people of Los Angeles cut back on water consumption by 10%. Along with the drought here in LA (just 3.21 inches of rain in downtown since July 1 of last year, down 12 inches from the average) eastern Sierra Nevada which supplies Angelenos with about half of our water is also experiencing record low rainfall and an abnormally small... more ›

Decent Place for a Pint: Bourbon Street Shrimp Co.

Decent Place for a Pint: Bourbon Street Shrimp Co.

Around 6pm yesterday I found myself craving a post-work beer, but there was a problem…I was on the Westside, far from my normal Silver Lake stomping ground. Fortunately, fate was looking out for me. While walking toward the Landmark to catch a film, I happened upon the Bourbon Street Shrimp Company. To be honest, I’ve never heard of it, but with patio doors facing the street I could hear diners digging into their Cajun inspired food. The sign advertising “3 dollar drafts until 8” was all the convincing I needed to step inside. more ›

Apple Season: Local Picks

Apple Season: Local Picks

Snow-Line Orchard and their apple crops are part of the Oak Glen enclave of farms and stands open to the public northeast of Los Angeles, home to other facilities like Mr. Law's Apple Stand, Moms Country Orchard, and Riley's Log Cabin Farm (which offers a pick-your-own apples service, much like our own childhood experience up in the Great White North). And speaking of things northern, to the north of us in Camino is the Apple Hill collective of growers, boasting dozens of local growers who produce a number of commercial as well as local apple varieties. For example, the Mother Lode Orchard has Paula Red apples from late July to September, McIintosh and Gala in late August, Golden Delicious in mid-September, Red Delicious, Empire, and Granny Smith in late September, as well as Braeburn, Stayman Winesap, Rome, Fuji, and Liberty in mid October. Over at Abel's Apple Acres you'll find crops of the Arkansas Black, Fuji, Gala, Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, and Red Rome. All of their apples are ideal for eating raw, the Fuji, Granny Smith, Red Rome and Golden Delicious great for cooking and pies, and the Red Delicious not good for cooking or baking with. more ›

The Homebrew of the Maltose Falcons

The Homebrew of the Maltose Falcons

If you're in the mood for a little award-winning homebrewed beer, you might trek out to the Mayfaire celebration of the Maltose Falcons, America's oldest homebrew club this weekend. Based out of the Home Wine, Beer, and Cheesemaking Shop in Woodland Hills, the club has been in pursuit of perfect homebrew since 1974. On Saturday, they meet for an annual picnic in Santa Paula, where winners of this year's competition will be announced; results are part of the statewide Sierra Nevada homebrew competition. More importantly, best in show gets custody of a replica of the Maltese Falcon named Hashell Dammet. You, as a paying visitor, get dinner and some mighty fine beer.

LA is On Track

What is that? Well, Phil Anschutz and co. (aka the Sports Lords of LA) think cycling is the next budding sport in SoCal, and invested $15 million in North America's only indoor velodrome to prove it. Admittedly, LAist has not watched much track cycling before, but the thought of bycycles going around a track is much more appealing than say, watching NASCAR. more ›
