Sheriff's Deputies Shoot, Kill 3 in Separate Incidents
This weekend's fatal deputy involved shootings brings the total number of such incidents to 13 for 2009. There were five in 2008.
Before this weekend, Sheriff Lee Baca called for expedited department investigations into deputy shootings of unarmed suspects after such an incident took place last week in Athens. However, at all three shootings this weekend, guns from the suspects were recovered, according to authorities.
LAPD Kill 12 in 2008 So Far: Bratton Says Criminals 'Coming Out in the Losing End'
The first quarter results are in for officer involved shootings and the survey says there have been 15 such incidents, 12 of them killing suspects (this number was the same in 2006). Of the 12 deaths, 10 guns were recovered on the suspects. Last year during the same reporting period, there were 18 officer involved shootings leading to 6 deaths.
40 Hours, 12 Shootings, 3 Murders
To mark the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., Los Angeles author and political commentator Earl Ofari Hutchinson thought up the idea of having a 40-hour "murder moratorium" from 6:01 p.m., Friday, to 10:01 p.m. Sunday. Those 40 hours this past weekend saw three murders across Los Angeles county, two of which were in South LA, reported KNBC.
Two LAPD Shootings, Same Night, Same Spot
The LAPD did not draw weapons not once last night, but twice at the same spot in Wilmington, a neighborhood just north of San Pedro. A difference of thirty yards and three hours, details for the second shooting, which left the assailant wounded, are not out yet.
