Classmates Honor Melody Ross; Her Teen Killers Charged as Adults

One week ago, 16-year-old Wilson High student Melody Ross was with her friends, watching the school's Homecoming football game. Last night the team observed a moment of silence in her honor, as Ross was gunned down minutes after she exited the Long Beach school's stadium. At last night's game students wrote MR on their cheeks, the team turned the school's "W" on their helmets upside down to make an "M" in their classmates honor, and attendees faced upped security, according to the Press-Telegram. Earlier that day in a Long Beach court Tom Love Vinson and Daivion Davis, both 16-year-old gang members, found themselves charged as adults; the Deputy DA said the charges are as a result of the "seriousness of the crime" and the fact that it was gang-related, notes LA Now. Ross was an innocent bystander; two young men who were wounded "may have been the intended targets."

Four Suspects Arrested in Last Night's Murder in Santa Monica

A shooting that left one man dead last night in a Santa Monica park led to the arrest of multiple suspects. At around 8:52 p.m. last night, two suspects approached and began shooting at a group of four people in Virginia Park on Pico Boulevard, a few blocks from Santa Monica College. Three people escaped safely, but 20-year-old Richard Juarez was killed. The Santa Monica Police Department this afternoon announced that four suspects are in custody.

No Suspects, Motive in Case of Shooting Death of Long Beach Teen

Gunfire erupted outside Wilson High School in Long Beach at around 10 o'clock Friday night as about 200 students were inside the building enjoying their Homecoming dance. The bullets took the life of 16-year-old Melody Ross, a "popular honors student and athlete," and the "daughter of Cambodian immigrants," who died in hospital half an hour after the shooting, according to LA Now. Ross and friends had just left the Homecoming football game when the shots were fired. Police are working to determine who killed Ross and wounded two young men, but "said they have no suspects and no motive," and "don't have a description or many leads to go on."

LAPD Goes on Citywide Tactical Alert after Synagogue Shooting [Updated]

An early morning shooting at a North Hollywood synagogue has set in motion a series of precautionary actions just in case the incident was part of a larger plan. The LAPD is now on a citywide tactical alert, the Operations Center has been activated at a Level One and the FBI has joined into the investigation. Police say they are increasing patrols around "critical Jewish sites in their areas" and has alertet all Jewish day schools and synagogues of the incident.

Report Released on Fatal Pasadena Police Shooting

It was February 19th when 38-year-old Pasadena resident Leroy Barnes was sitting in the passenger seat of a car that was pulled over. As officers approached the car, Barnes put his hands into his backpack, which led to a series of events ending in his death, after 11 bullets, seven in his back, reports the Pasadena Star News.

Two Shot at a NoHo Synagogue [Updated]

Two men were shot as they headed into a North Hollywood temple for morning prayer early today. It was about 6:20 a.m. when the two Jewish men in their 30s were approached by a man who pulled a gun, which jammed at first, according to the LA Times. The men were shot in the lower torso and are listed in stable condition. Police do not believe it is a robbery and are investigating it as a hate crime. The synagogue is the Adat Yeshurun Valley Sephardic synagogue on the 12000 block of Sylvan Street. UPDATE: A man has been detained by police, but it is unknown if he is a suspect. Patrols have been kicked up around other synagogues as they determine of this was a solo or group effort.

Shooting in Carthay Circle Prompts Street Closures

Police have set up a large perimeter in the Carthay Circle neighborhood as they search for an armed suspect thought to be hiding in the area. Shots were fired around 2:20 p.m. and at this point, there are no reported victims, according to LAPD's media relations. The perimeter is focused in the area around Fairfax and Olympic.

Van Nuys: 1 Dead in Shooting, Trash Compactor Kills 1

KABC-TV is reporting a shooting death in front of a Van Nuys apartment building that has left one person dead. Two suspects, one reported to be a female, were apparently seen running eastbond on Vanowen towards Sepulveda. LAPD Media Relations has few details at the moment. Also: The Los Angeles Fire Depatment is reporting the death of a man in his 60's who was apparently was killed in a trash compactor at 8201 N. Woodley Ave., near the Van Nuys Airport.

Following the arrest of Alfonzo Landa earlier this month, officials today announced the identify of 23-year-old Ricardo Hernandez. A $50,000 reward for tips leading to the arrest of those involved was announced in late September, a couple days after the murder.

Northridge: One Killed in an Apparent Case of Mistaken Identity

A 21-year-old man was killed in Northridge yesterday when a vehicle pulled up and began opening fire, possibly mistaking the victim for someone else. About one half hour earlier, two groups of black males got into a verbal dispute at the corner of White Oak Avenue and Lassen Street. One group fled when they realized the other group was armed with handguns. Most ran across the street to take cover on a church's grounds.

Shooting Near High School in Hollywood Prompts Street Closures [Updated]

Police are currently searching a Hollywood neighborhood after an after-school shooting near Helen Bernstein High School. At 1:55 p.m., police received a call about shots fired on the 1300 block of North Wilton Place. A 16-year-old girl was shot in the hip area, according to police. A 30-year-old woman was shot to death last night in the parking lot for a student housing complex at the University of California Irvine, according to abc7.com. Woman Robbed, Then Shot on 3rd Street

Walking on 3rd Street near Kings Road Monday night around 11:20 p.m., a 31-year-old woman was approached by a twenty-something black female who demanded the victim's purse threatening to shoot her if she did not comply. The suspect, described to be 20-25 years-old, 5 feet 5 inches tall, 145 pounds, wearing all dark clothing, then pulled the woman's purse off her arm and shot her in the upper torso before entering a vehicle, according to the LAPD.

LA's 137th Murder of 2009

LA Weekly is tracking every murder within Los Angeles city limits and yesterday in Pacoima, the 137th for 2009 occurred. Yesterday, "30-year-old Gerardo Cruz was standing out in front of his girlfriend's house with her brother drinking beer when three alleged gang members jumped out of their blue compact car and 'shot up the place.'" Although gang related, police said Cruz was not affiliated with any gangs. This was the fourth homicide in the LAPD's Foothill Division this month. Citywide, homicides are significantly down--around 32%--compared to last year.

Off-Duty Officer Shoots Two at Angels Game

More details are coming out from last night's shooting at the Angels-Colorado game. An off-duty officer from the Anaheim Police apparently shot two men after an altercation. One was shot in the head and the other in the chest. All three were sent to the hospital and the officer has been the only person released so far. TV news reports suggest that the officer identified himself as the two men were allegedly breaking into a car. When he approached, they attacked him and he used the gun in self defense. One witness who claimed she was one of the victim's sister-in-law told KTLA that the officer began the fight with the two men, one of whom is a marine.

K-Town Karaoke Bar Shooting Leaves One Dead, One Wounded

A late night shooting in Koreatown has claimed one life, and left another person wounded. The incident took place just after 2:00 in the morning at the M2 Cafe & Karaoke bar at 4001 W. Sixth Street, according to KTLA. "One of the victims was shot in the head and was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he was declared dead. The other victim suffered a graze wound to his head and was expected to survive." No arrests were made at the scene. M2 is described by one Yelp reviewer as being a bar/lounge up front with the karaoke rooms in the rear; it is not clear from available reports if the shooting took place in or outside the venue.

Glendale Police Say Pizza Hut Robber Meant to Kill Employee

A man dressed in a business suit entered the Pizza Hut at 1261 S. Central Ave. in Glendale on Sunday at 11:10 a.m. He produced a gun and crossed over the counter, demanding money from the 18-year-old female shift manager, who was working alone. "He confronted the young woman in the back of the building and, at gunpoint, demanded money from the safe. After getting some cash, he turned around, shot the victim in the shoulder and also took her purse," explains cbs2, adding that the investigation authorities "say they believe he meant to kill her." The restaurant has released surveillance video showing the heist and shooting; the employee was wounded, but is expected to survive. The crime netted the robber "several hundred dollars," according to an abc7 video report.

Teenager Shot and Killed at Compton Restaurant

An 18-year-old man was eating at the Louisiana Fried Chicken on Rosecrans Avenue in Compton shortly before 10 p.m. Sunday when he was shot and killed, cbs2 reports. The restaurant is part of a chain of fried chicken fast food joints, known locally not just for their eats, but their distinct "decor."

Man Killed at Beverly Center ID'd as Rap Artist, Dolla

A suspect who shot and killed Dolla was also arrested yesterday at Los Angeles International Airport. Up-and-coming rap artist Roderick Anthony Burton II--stage name, Dolla--died Monday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center after being shot near an entrance of the Beverly Center yesterday afternoon. The around-3-p.m. shooting prompted the closure of the area as police searched for possibly two suspects, but to no avail.

A shooting that occurred around 3:10 p.m. at the La Cienega Boulevard entrance of the Beverly Center has left one man dead. He was transported to Cedars-Sinai where he died. Two suspects, one of them who may be a female, are on the loose.

Driver Shot on Freeway Crashes in Encino

A driver who crashed on Ventura Blvd. early this morning was shot while driving on the 101 Freeway. At about 2:45 a.m., the driver was shot at the Hayvenhurst Avenue exit of 101 in Encino. The driver then made his way Ventura where he crashed into a light pole. Witnesses came to his aid discovering his several bullet wounds and called the police. He was taken to the hospital in unknown condition and police are uncertain of the motive so far.

1 Killed, 1 Injured in West Hollywood Shooting

A shooting on the 900 block of North Doheny Drive this morning at 9:05 a.m. left one man dead and a 50-year-old woman in critical condition. The circumstances surrounding the incident are not yet known, according to a Los Angeles County Sheriff's representative over the phone. UPDATE: This incident apparently was an attempted murder-suicide.
