TV Junkie: 'Trauma' Has a Pulse; Tivo Beats Leno; White Christmas

NBC's "Trauma", like a Monty Python sketch, ain't dead yet according to Chuck Barney at the Contra Costa Times. After trimming it's production costs the producers were given the green light to make 3 more episodes. We like the show (it's on the TV Junkie Plan tonight at 9pm) because: it's the only medical drama series with some action/cajones on TV right now; it's shot in our onetime home of SF and that location has become a character in the show; and it stars the talented and lovely Anastasia Griffith whom we interviewed at the Emmys and also a couple years ago about her work on FX's "Damages". more ›

TV Junkie: Top Gear's Project Sipster; 'Cupid' Returns

Our friends over at BBC America's "Top Gear" have really done it - they have achieved unprecedented success with "Project Sipster": the creation of a car that gets 84mpg , goes from 0-60mph in 7 seconds, and whose cost was to be $7000 or less. You can see more in this video. Suck it Tesla and watch "Top Gear" on BBC America tonight at 8pm. more ›

TV Junkie: HBO's Got Obama Inaugural Covered; 'Damages' Returns Tonight!

HBO has acquired the exclusive rights to air Barack Obama's inauguration kick-off events on January 18th. The actual inauguration ceremony will be carried by several outlets but the 90+ minutes of live performances preceding the ceremony will exclusively belong to HBO. In 1993, paid $1.5 million to air the performances preceding Bill Clinton's inauguration but unlike that year, HBO says it will provide access to all viewers and not just HBO subscribers. more ›

TV Junkie: Monday - Hills vs. Gladiators

It's official, for better or worse, Jimmy Fallon will host NBC's "Late Night" show after Conan O'Brien shifts to "The Tonight Show" next year. Despite being a fan of SNL alumni, I wish I felt more positive about this appointment. While it's true that Conan O'Brien was a relative unknown before taking the reins, he was a prolific writer for SNL and "The Simpsons" for years -- the point being that hosting one of these shows is more than just having a personality and reading cue cards. more ›

No Star Trek for Shatner

No Star Trek for Shatner

Some Trekkies are having heart palpitations over this: William Shatner, who played Captain Kirk, will not be in the 2008 release of Star Trek. While Leonard Nimoy gets to play the resurrection of his character, Spock, there is no place for Shatner and the cocky and horny Boston Legal character is disappointed, he told the Associated Press: 'I couldn't believe it. I'm not in the movie at all. Leonard, God bless his heart, is in, but not me. 'I thought, what a decision to make, since it obviously is a decision not to make use of the popularity I have to ensure the movie has good box office. It didn't seem to be a wise business decision.'' more ›

TV Junkie: Sex On Wheels; Amy Sedaris on Letterman; Poison on Ferguson

A Word or 54 (or so): I know that there are some folks who are happy to be getting a few new episodes of the doomed Studio 60 - enjoy it while you can. Funny how there is no cohesive letter-writing campaign to save that one, at least not a campaign that is getting any press. TV Junkie: Weekend Edition

A Word or 48: The weekend might be there for watching some sports on TV. Other than the baseball there's the Monaco Grand Prix (Speed) on Sunday, as well as cycling's Giro d'Italia (Versus). For kicks, if you are truly desperate, watch Hudson Hawk in Spanish on KVEA on Saturday at 9 p.m. Tonight - Friday - June 1, 2007 Orioles @ Angels (Fox Sports, 7:00 p.m.) The Henry Rollins Show (IFC, 8:00 p.m.)... more ›

Weekly Movie Picks: Mama Drama, Cemetery Screenings

Weekly Movie Picks: Mama Drama, Cemetery Screenings

Big Bad Mama, a 1974, Roger Corman-produced breasts-and-bullets flick, features the brilliant tagline, "The family that slays together, stays together." This B-movie version of Bonnie & Clyde is set in 1932 Texas and stars Angie Dickinson as a bootlegging, bank-robbing mom who joins up with Tom Skerritt and William Shatner to bilk society for all they can get. In between the robbing and killing are numerous sexy romps. more ›

TV Junkie: 'Heroes', '24', 'DWTS', all winding up/down; Shatner on Conan (not literally)

A Word or 146: It was fun to watch Molly Shannon on SNL. In general it was a great broadcast and she was just as funny now as she was then but who could really care about Linkin Park? Less fun is reading about the continuing poor decision-making by the networks in their upcoming program development. NBC is trying to cover all it's bases milking Heroes, their only good horse in the running, by creating... more ›

Rocketman: The Holy Trinity

It's a legend. Unutterably brilliant. William Shatner doing his interpretation of the song "Rocketman." Then there's Chris Elliott spoofing William Shatner on Letterman (circa early 1990s). Then there's Stewie Griffin spoofing Chris Elliott spoofing William Shatner. more ›

TV Junkie: No Jon Stewart or Colber(t) But We Have New Episodes of 'Heroes' and '24' - Choose Your Poison

A Word or 14: Supposedly the Daily Show and Stephen Colbert have the week off - how dare they?! I may have to resort to watching PBS, or, godhelpus, the local news. Today - Monday - February 19th, 2007 The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (TCM, 5:00 p.m.) John Ford's '62 classic with James Stewart, John Wayne, Lee Marvin, Edmond O'Brien, Lee Van Cleef, John Carradine and practically everyone else who was alive at... more ›

Angie Dickinson kicks butt at American Cinematheque

In between an Angie Dickinson double feature last night, the woman herself made an appearance and answered questions from a hoarde of enthusiastic male fans. At 75, the woman still has it; heck, she doesn't look a day over 50. (she may have had work done, but it's exceptionally good work). more ›

Scotty Beams Up

For those of you who grew up grooving on the original "Star Trek" series (it's okay, let your geek flag fly), Scotty, that irascible, whiskey swilling Scotsman who ruled the engine room of the starship with a firm hand and a quick wit was a welcome counterpoint to the soft-focus close-ups and foppish shenanigans of William Shatner's heavily rouged Kirk. more ›
