A group of surfers and beachgoers in Venice rescued a great white shark this morning after it latched onto a fishing hook and washed ashore. The rescue near Venice Pier was caught on a video sent to KTLA.

Great White Shark Fisherman: "I Didn't Know What Was at the End of the Hook."
Now that he could be facing charges, the fisherman who reeled in a great white shark off the coast of Huntington Beach has to do something no fisherman wants to do: downplay his catch.
The fisherman, Michael Castillo, is now saying that he had no idea that he was reeling in a protected species.
"I was nervous, excited," Castillo told NBC Los Angeles. "I didn't know what was at the end of the hook."
Great White Shark Capture Posted on YouTube Could Result in Criminal Charges
A group of fisherman on the Huntington Beach Pier who captured a great white shark and posted the graphic video on YouTube may also have reeled in something else they didn't expect: a misdemeanor charge.
Authorities from the California Department of Fish and Game are investigating the great white shark's capture on Monday, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Great White Sharks Feeding on Sea Lions at Santa Barbara Island
Despite its name, Santa Barbara Island is located off the coast of Los Angeles. At one square mile, it's the smallest of the eight Channel Islands and is one of five included in the National Park. Today, rangers are warning island visitors to swim at their own risk.
More Great White Shark Breaching Caught on Video
With more than 20 confirmed sightings of sharks breaching at Sunset Beach in Pacific Palisades last Summer, this year might be no different. A local surfer spoke to KTLA last night saying that he's spotted a dozen shark breaches last week at Will Rogers Beach, even catching a few on videotape (watch the video here). At least one of those has been confirmed as a Great White by expert Ralph Collier at the local non profit Shark Research Committee. Collier says sharks do not typically pose a threat to humans. And most surfers seem to be happy to hit the waves and share the waters with them.
Want to Swim with Some Sharks?
The Daily News reports that a local nonprofit is seeking help from Southern Californians who have a taste for adventure: "Iemanya Oceanica is organizing a shark-tagging research expedition to Baja California next month and is seeking up to 20 scuba divers/snorkelers from Southern California to help." If you go, you'll be looking for Whale Sharks, which are described as "the largest living fish species on the planet, which can "grow up to 40 feet long, weigh up to 15 tons and live up to 70 years." But, phew: "Although they have very large mouths, they are harmless, feeding solely on plankton, which are microscopic marine"

LAst Night's Action: Everywhere You Turn
Lakers 103, Bulls 91 - Los Angeles spread the scoring around to down Chicago. Sasha Vujacic scored 19, Kobe Bryant had 18, and Lamar Odom had 17 (plus 16 rebounds).
LAst Night's Action: Lakers Win Battle of LA
Lakers 113, Clippers 92 - Kobe Bryant, again playing through pain (this time it was a pulled groin), sunk 32 points to lead the Lakers to victory. The Clippers also had players dinged up, and a host of them (including Elton Brand) never made it onto the court. Chris Kaman won the battle of the big men statisticly with 18 points and 16 rebounds, but young Andew Bynum (14 points, 9 rebounds, 6 blocks) performed well in the victory.
Shark Week at LAist
I didn't intend for this to be shark week, but sometimes shark week just happens. Laist readers over at sharkdiver wanted to share their video of this bloody shark encounter with us. Not for the faint of heart. Oh and if you dream of someday swimming with giant squid, they've got you covered. Watch out for those razor-sharp beaks! We shot this at Isla Guadalupe, Mexico aboard our shark diving vessel MV Islander. Shark Divers...
LAst Night's Action: Aboya, Bruins Looking Good
Bruins 83, Colonials 60 - UCLA (ranked #1 by ESPN/USA Today and #2 by the AP) hammered George Washington at home and got a lot of players involved. Darren Collison returned from a pre-season knee injury to score 14 and Alfred Aboya had six points despite a broken bone under his eye. Three other players scored in double digits, including highly touted freshman Kevin Love who had 11 points and 11 rebounds. Kings 3, Sharks...
LAst Weekend's Action: Lakers Looking Up
Lakers - The Lakers punished Detroit with 41 points in the 4th-quarter on Friday. Six Lakers hit double-digits in the game. They stayed hot through Sunday, when they destroyed Chicago 106-78. Five reserves hit double-digits on that night, and the bench outscored the starters 73-33. The Bull's bench, by comparison, had 31. Clippers - With their full roster back, the Warriors put together a 122-105 drubbing of the Clippers on Friday. The Clippers fell again...
LAist Interview: Rob Stewart, creator of Sharkwater
In a year of great documentaries, Sharkwater resides in the very top tier. It is a passionate advocacy film about the immense slaughter of sharks currently going on in the world's oceans. Sharks are caught in 60-mile long lines, have their fins cut off and then are simply dumped back in the ocean to rot. I recently had the opportunity to speak with the film's writer, director and narrator, Rob Stewart. You originally started...
Movie Review: Sharkwater
The opening moments of Sharkwater promise what appear to be little more than a beautiful film about the kingdoms of the deep. Plants sway with the current, silver schools of fish move as one and sharks glide effortlessly through the clear water, remote and menacing. Then, one of the more remarkable images I've ever seen suddenly appears: a man is standing on the ocean floor cradling a six-foot shark in his arms and stroking...
Dallas Remembers Why They Love the Kings
If Heath Biter failed to give you a rotten feeling about the Kings' chances this year, how does a 5-1 drubbing to a division rival treat you? To make matters worse, the points weren't taken by, say, the San Jose Sharks or Anaheim Ducks - two Pacific Division sides boasting some of the best odds of winning the Cup. Instead, the LA players had their asses handed to them by the Dallas Stars, a squad predicted by many pundits to join the Kings on the golf links come playoff time.
LAst Night's Action: Rookie Hazing Season
Angels 2, Devil Rays 1 - LAnaheim picked up a second straight 2-1 victory thanks to another solid outing from their rotation. Ervin Santana had 10Ks, and the Halos swept Tampa Bay to inch just a little bit closer to their third pennant in four years. Sitting at 90 wins, their magic number is down to three. Life isn't so sweet for the Devil Rays, who dressed their rookies in Hooters attire. Welcome to the bigs.
LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Lose. Twice.
Rockies 3, Dodgers 1 - Olmedo Saenz cranked a pinch-hit home run in the seventh, but the Dodger's offense was otherwise anemic. Rockies starter Jeff Francis had 10 Ks.
LAst Night's Action: Guess Who's Back, Back Again ...
With a major project concluded, I'm back to regular writing. Hockey is back, too. You can watch a free game downtown tonight. Angels 10, Devil Rays 7 - The last time the Halos played small ball this well, they won a World Series. They could be headed back, with their magic number down to five. The Angels piled up double digits against the Devils without a home run on Monday, the 11th time they've reached...
LA Kings Throwing A Downtown Party
Do you live downtown? Can you prove it? Then get yourself to Staples Center tomorrow night. The Los Angeles Kings are throwing a party just for you. I’m not sure how the Kings define “party”, but starting at 6:30, the 2007-2008 team will be introduced. AEG President Tim Lieweke and all-time Kings great Luuuuuuuuuuc Robitaille will also be present to tell you all about exhilarating real estate developments and about how exciting this hockey...
LAst Night's Action: Clippers Win Battle of LA
Clippers 90, Lakers 82 - LA's teams seem like they're headed in opposite directions. Kobe had 29, but the Clippers had five players in double digits. After the showdown at Staples, the Clippers have won seven of eight while the Lakers have dropped four of their last five. Both teams sit towards the bottom of the playoff field, with the Clippers (now a .500 team) only trailing their arena mate by a game and a half....
LAst Night's Action: Farmar Sets Record
Lakers 126, Kings 103 - Kobe doesn't have to score big to win big. Dishing out 13 assits to go with 19 points, he led the Lakers to a commanding victory over Sacramento. Los Angeles had six players in double digits and shot a whopping 61.7% from the floor. Maurice Evans led the way with 21. Jordan Farmar set a new record by playing in the development league in the afternoon, then being recalled and...
LAst Night's Action: 24 Only Worth 23
Grizzlies 88, Lakers 86 - When these two teams faced off a few days ago, Kobe had 60 points. This time it didn't go so well. Kobe was held to 23 and the Lakers were held to 34.4 percent from the field. With Kobe out of steam, Memphis ended the Laker's 5 game winning streak and avenging their previous game against Los Angeles. Surprising from a team that still hasn't won two straight games this...
LAst Night's Action: March Into History
Lakers 121, Grizzlies 119 - It's March Madness, but the most impressive hoops action keeps coming from a guy who never played a minute of college ball. Kobe had 60 points against Memphis, but it wasn't just his one game point total that generated buzz. This is the third game in a row he has scored at least 50, a feat only matched by Wilt Chamberlain, Michael Jordan, Elgin Baylor. Chamberlain actually did it seven...
LAst Night's Action: King Me, Kerr
Kings 116, Lakers 108 - Steve Kerr is eating his words, at least for today. Sacramento pulled themselves out of the division cellar by beating Los Angeles at Staples Center. The Lakers never held a lead, and were down by 17 at the half. Kobe had a double-double with 30 points and 10 assists, but it wasn't enough. Ducks 3, Sharks 1 - Anaheim scored a second big victory this week over division rival San...
TV Junkie: the Queen on Leno; 'Monk' Season Finale; New Rob Corddry on Sunday
A Word Or 30: A wall of repeats ends a fairly good week of new TV. They had to pull celebrity commentators off of Anna Nicole's coffin today, leaving nail marks on the lid. Tonight - Friday - March 2nd, 2007 Sharks @ Ducks (PRIME, 7:00 p.m.) Kings @ Lakers (Fox Sports, 7:30 p.m.) 38th NAACP Image Awards (Fox, 8:00 p.m.) Hosted by LL Cool J Las Vegas (NBC, 9:00 p.m.) Ed thinks about...
LAst Night's Action: Barn. Burnt.
Bruins 70, Trojans 65 - For the second time this season, LAist correctly predicted a barn burner. UCLA didn't have a lead until the final six minutes, when USC's foul trouble unraveled an impressive game from the matchup's traditional underdog. The Bruins went 23-31 at the line, compared to a mere 3-5 for the Trojans. USC kept it close until the final seven seconds, hitting a string of deep shots to pull within three. A...
TV Junkie: 'Lost' is Back - 'nuff said
A Word or 24: The now much-maligned Lost is back. OK so this is a bad show compared to what else on (basic cable) TV right now? Tonight - Wednesday - February 7th, 2007 Sharks @ Ducks (Fox Sports, 7:00 p.m.) College Basketball: USC @ UCLA (PRIME, 7:30 p.m) Friday Night Lights (NBC, 8:00 p.m.) Racial tension brews in the Panthers locker room, or is it the Jaguars? Some kind of animal. Criminal Minds/CSI:...
LAst Night's Action: So Many Questions
Knicks 102, Clippers 90 - Each team had five players score in double digits with just four other players adding 16 points to the game. The Clippers dominated the first half, leading by as many as 12 and going into the locker room up by 10. Something pretty inspirational must have happened at intermission, because New York scored the first ten points to even it up, then went on to win by 12. What did...
LAst Night's Action: David Beckham Richer Than You
David Beckham $250,000,000, Hollywood 2 - There had been rumblings for awhile, but nobody expected it to happen like this. International mega-ultra-super-ginorma star David Beckham has agreed to a five year deal to play soccer for the Los Angeles Galaxy. He will get paid over a quarter of a billion dollars, most of which will come from advertising and merchandising. Beckham currently has a soccer academy at the Home Depot Center in Carson (where the...
