Sunny Day: Gustavo Dudamel Will Appear on Sesame Street

Gustavo Dudamel has had a lot on his plate lately: this weekend, he'll lead over 1,000 musicians in performing Mahler's Eighth Symphony, and no doubt he had a hand in planning this year's newly-released Hollywood Bowl line-up. But that didn't stop the L.A. Philharmonic's superstar conductor from taking some time out for the kids by filming an upcoming guest appearance on "Sesame Street." more ›

A great intro to your weekend and your video lunch today: Sesame Street vs the Beastie Boys' "Sure Shot." At any rate, it's a blast, particularly with the intro by the Yip Yip aliens, have fun with it! more ›

Get It Straight: Bert & Ernie Are Sexless Friends, Says Sesame Street

A group pushing their gay agenda on the lives of innocent children have tried to sully the sexless friendship of "Sesame Street" puppet pals Bert and Ernie by circulating a petition to have the two guys get married on an episode of the show. But "Sesame Street" says they're just BFFs, not BFs. more ›

Should Bert & Ernie Have a Televised Same-Sex Wedding?

Most of us grew up watching Bert and Ernie bicker on "Sesame Street," and urban legend has suggested that the perennial roomies were actually educational television's puppet version of same-sex love. Now a group is calling for the show to air an episode featuring Bert and Ernie uniting themselves in legal matrimony. more ›

We Lost Three Today: Jim Henson, Andy Kaufman, Sammy Davis Jr.

Three is the un-magic number of today's video lunch retro delight buffet. These massive talents all departed the planet on May 16. Andy Kaufman who (most likely did not fake his own death but rather) died tragically at age 35 in Los Angeles from cancer in 1984, and both Jim Henson and Sammy Davis Jr. in 1990, Henson at age 53 in New York from a streptococcal infection and Sammy Davis Jr. in Beverly Hills at age 64 of complications from throat cancer. more ›

"Monsterpiece Theatre" Tackles a Darn Fine Mystery

There are two questions we must raise first: 1. Who killed Laura Palmer? 2. Where were you on the night of April 8, 1990? For your video lunch today, instead of something from "Twin Peaks," we're taking the tribute/spoof/Sesame Street route with this installation of "Monsterpiece Theatre," called "Twin Beaks," in which Cookie Monster attempts to uncover why the town is called "Twin Beaks." more ›

TV Junkie: Sesame Street Turns 41; NatGeo Contest; PTC Whines About #@#&!

Happy 41st Birthday to Sesame Street! We grew up watching this show and had our kids watch the program as well after finding it just as educational, relevant, and comforting. Sure, we don't have a lot of emotional investment in some of the newer characters (we need more Guy Smiley!!) but this is still the highest quality program for pre-schoolers available. We're resolved to somehow making it on set in order to fulfill that childhood dream that several million people probably have. Here's to another 41 years Sesame Street! more ›

TV Junkie: Finale Summary; Showtime Winter Series Dates

TV Junkie: Finale Summary; Showtime Winter Series Dates

As we know, last night had the excellent season finale of "Bored to Death" which we gave you a sneak peek of but it also had the finale of the multi-Emmy winning "Mad Men" on AMC. "Mad Men" generally had a great season with only a couple sleepy episodes but the finale was incredible. Maybe Don is finally free of Betty but the plight of the kids had our female viewing party members crying with most feeling that Don was much better off without "that crazy Betty". What will keep us pining for the next season is the momentum that was built up with what was ostensibly the launch of a start-up '60s-style. Summer of 2010 can't come too soon. more ›

Movie Review: Jim Henson's Commercials and Experiments

Movie Review: Jim Henson's Commercials and Experiments

, which I have since discovered was not actually created by Henson himself, but by the Children's Television Workshop, who then asked Henson to create characters for it. The episode was enjoyable not only as a flashback but also because the puppets were cruder versions of favorites, like Oscar the Grouch (who was oddly orange) and the little blond Mary Louise type, who was present in a gender-bending bit where the puppets popped up with no features and asked Gordon to give them noses and eyes, etc, for whatever they felt like being today. What kind of show could get away with that these days? more ›

Philip Glass's Sesame Street Concerto

A series of animated shorts titled "Geometry of Circles," featuring music composed by Philip Glass, kaleidoscopically tranced out legions of Sesame Street viewers in the early 80's. The clip above features four of these shorts strung together almost seamlessly, even though they were first broadcast separately, in some cases years apart. According to the Muppet Wiki, "Geometry of Circles" dates back to 1979.... more ›

Telling It LIke It Is: Avenue Q

Telling It LIke It Is: Avenue Q

Avenue Q, the Broadway sensation now playing at the Ahmanson Theatre, simply put, is Sesame Street and The Muppets for adults. Actually, it's any go-lucky humpty-dory family/neighborhood TV sitcom with overly crude humor. It's a tight production with abrupt segues, hints of metatheatrical jabs and extremely catchy tunes. Everything's very un-PC, but that's okay, cause a puppet said it, right? They're just telling it like it is, as they see it, no qualms about... more ›

My Manny problem

If you’ve missed all the bright orange book ads and have ducked all the media coverage (New York, The New Yorker, Vogue), you’re one of the few readers who hasn’t heard of The Manny, alleged to be this summer’s Devil Wears Prada: chick-lit for the beach, right-coast division. Remembering June Pointer

Remembering June Pointer

June Pointer, youngest of the singing Pointer Sisters, died Tuesday of cancer at UCLA Medical Center. In addition to singing on the group's major albums, including lead vocal on the song "Jump (For my Love)," she co-wrote songs such as "I'm So Excited," which exemplified the group's capacity for joyous naughtiness. The Pointer Sisters' music spanned genres: they could sing rock, R&B, old-fashioned jazz, and country all on the same album and still have a consistent sound. more ›
