Brazillian maestro Sergio Mendes has made the Hollywood Bowl something of a second home ever since his 1968 debut. On Friday night, midway through his set, he declared it “my favorite place in the world.” And the love is reciprocated almost annually; in the past five seasons alone, he’s been on three of them. It’s easy to see why the mutual love affair continues; Mendes’ breezy bossa nova sounds are the perfect soundtrack for a summer evening involving a bandshell, a picnic dinner, and a glass of wine.

Tonight In Rock: Pepper Rabbit, Robotanists, La Ghost, Beware Of Safety
Tonight LA-based indie pop quartet Robotanists will be performing for free smack dab in the middle of California Plaza in Downtown. Local lo-fi rockers La Ghost are poised to take on the Echo. And, lastly, LA-based instrumental rockers Beware of Safety will be gracing the hole-and-corner Pehrspace. But we strongly suggest heading over to Spaceland to catch Silver Lake-based indie pop act Pepper Rabbit. LAist favorites, Colorado-based duo Candy Claws are slated to perform as well.
Pencil This In: Mas Que Nada @ The Bowl, Laugh It Up in Santa Monica
Latin heavyweights light up Hollywood Bowl tonight starting at 8 PM. Brazilian great Sergio Mendes joins forces with the Puerto Rican piano master Eddie Palmieri and congaist Poncho Sanchez team up for a great night of tropical music. You won't be disappointed.
Tonight In Rock: Sergio Mendes, Dirty Projectors, The Watkins Family Hour, Army Navy
Tonight legendary Brazilian musician Sergio Mendes will be headlining the Hollywood Bowl. Brooklyn's crown jewel, the erratic experimental indie rock collective known as Dirty Projectors (LAist Review), are poised to grace the Troubadour. And, lastly, the Watkins Family Hour (LAist Review) will be taking place at Largo at the Coronet. But we strongly suggest heading over Spaceland to catch local indie rockers Army Navy (LAist Interview, #2, Review), who will be ringing in their latest 7" Fandango. LAist favorites White Arrows are slated to kick things off.
Tonight In Rock: Sergio Mendes, Dir En Gray, M83, The Melvins
Tonight Grammy Award-winning Brazilian artist Sergio Mendes will be performing at Club Nokia in Downtown. LA-based punk rockers the Melvins are concluding a two-night stint at the Troubadour. Oakland's own abstract hip hop sextet Subtle will be stopping through the Knitting Factory with Zach Hill of Hella. And, lastly, English singer-songwriter Holly Golightly is slated to share the stage at Spaceland with Frank Fairfield. But we recommend heading over to the Henry Fonda Music Box to see French electronic group M83. School of Seven Bells, a relatively newfangled Brooklyn-based group formed by Benjamin Curtis of Secret Machines, will be opening.
