Tonight Talking Heads splinter, legendary new wave duo Tom Tom Club will be headlining the Echoplex. Local electronic mastermind James Tamborello, otherwise known as Dntel, is poised to take on the Bootleg Theater with none other than LA-based orchestral pop duo the Long Lost, a collaboration between Alfred Darlington (otherwise known as electronic mastermind Daedelus) and his wife Laura. And, lastly, LA-by-way-of-Colorado folk troubadour Patrick Park will be gracing the Echo Park United Methodist Church with local indie rock outfit Sea Wolf (LAist Interview, Review, #2, #3). But we strongly suggest heading over to the Smell in Downtown to catch Oxnard-bred lo-fi garage rock trio Catwalk.
Tonight In Rock: Tom Tom Club, Dntel, Patrick Park, Catwalk
Tonight In Rock: Sea Wolf, The Parson Red Heads, Rachael Cantu, Toots & The Maytals

LA-based singer-songwriter Rachael Cantu is poised to warm up the stage at the Bootleg Theater for San Franciscan chamber-punk outfit Bonfire Madigan. And, lastly, Jamaican reggae outfit Toots & the Maytals will be taking on the Key Club in Hollyweird. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Autry National Center of the American West in the heart of Griffith Park to catch local indie rock outfit Sea Wolf (LAist Interview, Review, #2, #3). LAist favorites, LA-by-way-of-Colorado folk troubadour Patrick Park—who is touring in support of his third full-length effort to date, 2010's Come What Will—is slated to kick things off.
Tonight In Rock: Alice In Chains, Daniel Lanois, The Album Leaf, Saint Motel
Tonight legendary Seattle-bred alternative rockers Alice In Chains will be performing to a sold-out crowd at the Hollywood Palladium. Famed Québécois producer/musician Daniel Lanois is poised to take on Spaceland. And, lastly, local indie rock outfit Saint Motel (LAist Interview) will be gracing the Roxy in Hollyweird. But we strongly suggest heading over to the El Rey Theatre to catch San Diegan electronic act the Album Leaf, who will be celebrating their latest endeavor—2010's A Chorus Of Storytellers. LAist favorites, acclaimed British indie rock outfit the XX are slated to kick things off.
KCRW's Masquerade Ball at The Park Plaza Hotel
It's hardly surprising that KCRW knows how to throw a party. I mean they are the home of Morning Becomes Eclectic one of the best music shows on air. And I don't mean in Los Angeles. I mean in the country. The radio station had rented out the gorgeous Park Plaza Hotel in MacArthur Park and threw a masked ball Louis XIV would have been proud of. KCRW's famed DJs spun tunes in every room as costumed guests milled around in varying states of inebriation. In the parking lot, food trucks waited patiently for the midnight hour to strike, a time when the guests would give in to their secret desire for tacos and grilled cheese.
White Water, White Bloom - Meet Sea Wolf's Alex Church
“I met and fell in love with a girl in Montreal while on tour with Irving, and just before signing with Dangerbird,” Church recalls. “And then, while touring behind the Sea Wolf record, I spent most of my time off in Montreal with her. Apart from "Wicked Blood" and "O Maria!," which I wrote in Los Angeles, everything on White Water was written in Montreal, holed up in our little apartment, a block away from the river. That was all of last fall, winter and spring, so I was very much influenced by that experience, and a lot of the record is set there in my immediate surroundings, along with remembrances of being home on the West Coast.”
LAist CD Review: KCRW's Sounds Eclectic
Stoking the flames of independence, KCRW released its latest compilation album from live Morning Becomes Eclectic performances cut from twelve different in-studio acts. Crowd pleasers like The Shins and The Swell Season imbibe the album with not so new takes on their even older songs while Spoon and Indie Brits, The Orange Lights dig deep into their live repertoire to deliver interesting versions of their already strong songs.
Tonight in Rock: Sia, Matt Costa, Hey Willpower
Be joyful with the electro-pop sounds of Hey Willpower (Will from Imperial Teen and Tomo from Tussle) at The Echo or get a more worldly groove on at the Temple Bar. Jackshit, who we interviewed once, plays tonight and there are two in-store performances as well: one at Amoeba (of course) and the other at Active Ride Show. There's a few sold out shows, but you deserve to know if you're hardcore enough to try to get in and The Airborne Toxic Event released a new song yesterday (embedded below).
Sea Wolf @ The Natural History Museum, 1/4/08
Two weeks ago, locals Sea Wolf (MySpace), whose album was number six on Nic Harcourt's Top Ten Albums of 2007, performed as the headliner of First Fridays (MySpace) at the Natural History Museum in Exposition Park.
Pencil This In: Friday
We comb through tons of event listings so you don't have to. LA events have come back from its winter doldrums tonight. Big time. Here's what's happening around town tonight -- there's lots of learning mixed in between all the great entertainment stuff.
Everest's Top Ten of 2007
I've always been intrigued by other "best of" lists, but this year I decided to take it to a whole new level. I e-mailed a handful of bands that I've seen this past year in order to unearth what exactly captivated them in '07. As music listeners, it is our duty to take a keen interest in our favorite musician's influences. After all, they rocked our little world, might as well see what rocked their little world. Therefore, this is an act of paying it forward to those hardworking, underpaid musicians who truly made a difference within the music scene this year.
Music Morning: Best LA Albums, Radiohead, Posh Spice
Rock Insider, a blog dedicated to music and life in Los Angeles, shares a top ten list: The Best Los Angeles Albums of 2007. We are happy to report that some LAist local favs made the list including Sea Wolf, Great Northern, Eleni Mandell, The Valley Arena and The Deadly Syndrome. No more choose-your-own-price for Radiohead's "In Rainbows" album starting on Monday. The band, who had previously written off Apple iTunes, is currently in talks...

Nic Harcourt’s Top Ten Albums of 2007
You might recall that right around Labor Day we celebrated KCRW's 30th anniversary of Morning Becomes Eclectic with a series of interviews with a handful of their on-air personalities. Today we are lucky enough to get the Top 10 list of Nic Harcourt's top albums of 2007. We are very happy to see that he's just as down with local kids Sea Wolf and Great Northern as we are. Not only that, but atop his list is another local girl, Jesca Hoop!
Big in '08 Addendum
LA Times staffer and Buzz Bands blogger Kevin Bronson's story "Taking the L.A. indie rock scene personally" hit stands last Thursday. By means of an intimate portrayal, Bronson set forth his pick of indie rock up-and-comers for L.A.'s indie rock scene in 2008. While I completely admire that he would put his neck out there for three rather small, entirely worthy bands (The Airborne Toxic Event, Castledoor, and The Deadly Syndrome) at the forefront of...
A Eulogy for Peter Walker
Eulogies Eulogies Dangerbird Records Release Date: 09/11/07 Peter Walker did the right thing when he decided to ditch the solo career for his band Eulogies. For some reason or another, his solo career didn't interest me, but Eulogies' self-titled 2007 release has proven otherwise. The new album is a striking and addictive indie rock endeavor, the antithesis of Walker's previous Wilco-compared work. Eulogies is built upon deceivingly poppy premise. The band name, lyrical content,...
TV Junkie: Tuesday Night Picks
Will we be able to survive the onslaught of new shows and season premieres tonight? Will you succumb to the hype of Cane? I've been hearing about that one since the beginning of the year. Reaper, on the CW, is directed by Kevin Smith of Clerks fame. But for quality I'm probably going to have to stick with Damages, at 10pm on FX, since I haven't missed an episode yet and won't miss this one....
Labor Day Weekend Air Contest
It's 4:19pm. Why are you at work? Doesn't your boss know this is Labor Day weekend? Doesn't everyone get a half day off on Labor Day Friday? But you, there you are, at work. (Like us.) You deserve something special. You deserve to be recognized. You deserve to see Air under the stars up in the trees at the Greek. With special guests Sondre Lerche and your boy, Sea Wolf. They're coming Sept 21....
Sunset Junction Day One Photo Essay
Sunset Junction on Saturday was one word: damn hot. Tons of bands played, gallons of sunscreen was applied, and hundreds of gallons of fluids were ingested. However, the sweat poured out in a way that was quite interesting. It was as if all the fluids inside wanted to go outside to see the pretty girls, be amazed by the variety of tattoos, and listen to the beautiful music. It didn't matter how much you...

LAist Concert Reviews of July '07
You may have noticed a new button on our left-hand column with the title We See The Best Concerts. It dawned on us the other day that we really do go to the best concerts and we usually write about them the next day or a few days later. So here's a wrap up of all 37 shows we reviewed this month, with links to the posts just in case you missed it. Chris...
Final Show of "Also I Like To Rock" @ The Hammer
Photo via Midnight Movies' website I managed to make it to the very last Also I Like To Rock event at the Hammer Museum last night in Westwood. But my camera died when we got there. Despite rumors that there would be a massive line to get in and no parking, showing up at 7:30 yielded a nice un-metered spot on Wilshire about a block away, and plenty of time to go to an...

Live Review: Sea Wolf @ The Echo 06/21/07
Let me preface the following review with: I've never seen Grand Ole Party, Everest, or Sea Wolf perform live before. Last night's show at The Echo was exceptional. However, I noticed a palpable disparity between Sea Wolf fans as I traveled from the back to the front of the brimming room. In the back, I experienced insouciant veterans, who felt as though the set list dragged a bit, but ended with a bang. In...
Tonight in Rock in LA - The Police, Sea Wolf - CONTEST
Sea Wolf - "You're a Wolf" It occurred to us that not everyone is aware of Sea Wolf as we thought.
