Warm Temps Close Mammoth Mountain, Cables Taken off Half Dome

Mother Nature is taunting us as she does best. After an earlier-than-expected season opening for Mammoth Mountain on Friday, officials had to close the popular skiing spot down as warmer temperatures made a return. "After a big storm earlier this week and great skiing and riding on Friday, record breaking warm temperatures rolled in, wreaking havoc on our snow in the process," a statement from the resort read. However, a storm in the near future could bring back the snow and lower temperatures.

Countdown to Summer: 34 Swimming Pools to Open for the Season

Get ready to splash! Come Saturday, 34 pools will open to the public for the summer season, including the new family Aquatic Center at Jackie Tatum (Harvard) Recreation Center in South LA. Additionally, 16 year-round pools will begin their summer schedule.

       

Today the Theodore Payne Foundation's 27th annual Wildflower Hotline debuted for the season, which will basically last through May. Every Friday, Emmy award winning actor Joe Spano of Hill Street Blues narrates the wildflower conditions starting in the southern deserts and climbing north along the coast to Central California. Damn, it's hot! The city of Los Angeles' 54 summer pools will open tomorrow, the first day of summer, through Labor Day, and are free for seniors, people with disabilities, youth, and adults with LA Public Library cards.

We're four months out from the official start of the 2008 Hollywood Bowl Season and the schedule is nearly complete. Single tickets won't go on sale for a couple months but the Bowl is offering 16 different series packages, each containing 3-5 genre-specific performances.
