This year's FYF Fest -- last Saturday at L.A. State Historic Park -- had something for everybody and at $40 entry for 10 hours of music on four stages (plus a comedy tent) was the ultimate no-brainer for live music aficionados.
FYF Fest 2011 Wins Punk Rock Hearts with Nearly Flawless Festival
FYF Fest w/ Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, Washed Out, Man Man, School of Seven Bells, DeLorean, and The Rapture, 9/4/10
There's no question that FYF Fest promoter Sean Carlson can assemble a musical lineup that arguably rivals or even surpasses many of the longstanding festivals, including the Sunset Junction Street Festival. But will this year's problems be resolved next year?
Sean Carlson's FYF Fest is the Ultimate 12-Hour Mix Tape, Brought to You Live
The lineup is an eclectic array of musicians, from headliner The Rapture to indie favorites like Panda Bear and Delorean, to older, influential bands like Unbroken and 7Seconds. Carlson’s programming criteria are simple: “It’s real mix tape of the bands that I love, so it’s all over the place. For the bands, it’s a chance to play with other amazing bands that would never play with one another.”
Week In Rock: The Rapture, Nite Jewel, Blue Giant, Pacific Hurt
This week NYC-based dance-punk trio the Rapture will be headlining Sean Carlson's ever-so-famous Fuck Yeah Fest—now in its seventh year—which is set to take place in Los Angeles State Historic Park. Local electronic chanteuse Nite Jewel, who recently released a new EP entitled Am I Real?, is poised to grace the Troubadour with none other than recent collaborators Teen Inc. in tow. Portland-based alt-rock-leaning outfit Blue Giant, which is of course a splinter of celebrated indie pop act Viva Voce, will be warming up the stage at Spaceland for Nashville's own rock troubadour Bobby Bare Jr.. And, lastly, Pacific Hurt, formerly known as Santa Ana-based indie rockers Aushua, will be taking on the Troubadour with San Diegan buzz band LESANDS, LA-by-way-of-Glasgow retro 50s/60s pop outfit Neverever and folk-infused indie rock outfit Mississippi Man.
FYF Fest - LA State Historic Park - 9/5/09 - Part 1
At the end of Fucked Up’s powerful, frenetic set, frontman Pink Eyes looks out at the crowd and says something along the lines of “You can say we played the Hipster Woodstock. You can say we play punk rock. One thing I know, my hips are in a state of shock.” It’s actually a fitting summary of last Saturday’s FYF festival - whose crowd is a healthy cross-section of young hipsters, and aging punk rockers with bad hips. I’m not entirely sure of the significance, but there seems to be a poetic irony in the proliferation of teenagers in Black Flag T-shirts and forty-somethings in Vivian Girls T-shirts.

Long lines and food shortages aside, it would be hard to call the FYF Fest anything but a success. Now in it's sixth year, an inspired lineup and a great cause made the "hipster Woodstock" the most successful F-Yeah yet. In-depth reviews are fothcoming, and make sure to check out more LAist coverage here.
Tonight In Rock: Ben Folds, Deerhoof, The (International) Noise Conspiracy, The Little Ones
Tonight there are far too many shows to chose from. We've got the second and final night of pop songstress Alanis Morissette at the Orpheum Theatre in Downtown. Nashville-based piano man Ben Folds is headlining the Wiltern. Jon Brion & Friends will be jamming at the Largo at the Coronet. SF-based noise rockers Deerhoof are slated to wreak havoc on all eardrums at the Echoplex. Local indie rockers the Little Ones are stopping through the Echo. And, of course, Sean Carlson (LAist Interview) of the Fuck Yeah Fest is up to no good again. This time around he's got Sweden's own the (International) Noise Conspiracy playing the tiny stage at the Eagle Rock Arts Center. If you aren't planning on a sweaty, good time, then we strongly suggest you check into Spaceland. Berklee College of Music alums Apollo Sunshine (LAist Interview) will be performing gleaming tunes from 2008's Shall Noise Upon with Athens-based rockers Dead Confederate.
Fuck Yeah Fest Day Two 08/26/07
Fuck Yeah Fest has officially ended and it was Fuck Yeah-tastic. I was on my feet for nearly seven hours, regularly traversing Sunset Blvd to see ten bands perform on Sunday. Between eight rolls of film and hundreds of digital pictures, this is day two through my lens....
An hour with Keith Morris and Sean Carlson of the F**k Yeah Fest: Fuck Yeah!
On a Thursday night in Los Feliz, the dudes who throw on the Fuck Yeah Fest set aside an hour to sit on a stoop and have a lengthy, convoluted conversation with me. Despite the perpetual interruptions and digression, I arrived at a very straightforward conclusion. Keith Morris (of Black Flag, The Circle Jerks, and Midget Handjob) and Sean Carlson are two friends who are real characters. They hate doing interviews, they love ice...
