TV Junkie: SAG Awards Wrap Up

TV Junkie: SAG Awards Wrap Up

We're pretty pleased that we scored 7 out of 8 of our TV picks for yesterday's Screen Actors Guild Awards. The only TV win we missed was Betty White's for "Hot In Cleveland" which even she wasn't expecting. We love Betty White, we enjoyed interviewing her at last year's SAG Awards, but this award was a mistake and it doesn't reflect well on the organization. more ›

TV Junkie: Haiti Benefit; Conan's Last Tonight Show; The SAG Awards

Tonight is the last episode of the Conan O'Brien version of "The Tonight Show" on NBC before it reverts back to the Jay Leno version. We predicted there would be problems with putting Leno on at 10pm as far back as December of 2008 but we never dreamed that NBC would make such a complete and utter screw up of things. How much more does Jeff Zucker have to screw up before the board cans his ass (and throw Dick "The Dick" Ebersol out while you're at it)? more ›

30-Hour SAG Meeting Leads to No Where

30-Hour SAG Meeting Leads to No Where

Talk about drama. A marathon 30-hour meeting between Screen Actors Guild national board members landed the outcome of pretty much nothing. Doug Allen, SAG's chief negotiator and national executive director, was almost fired, but filibusters and a sleepy board did not have the votes to fire him or authorize a strike or do much of anything else. The best take comes from the Hollywood Reporter: "The emergency national board meeting began before 9 a.m. Monday and pushed on through the night into Tuesday afternoon, when the organizers had scheduled a hard-stop time of 1 p.m. Within an hour of the official end of the proceedings, exhausted-looking board members could be seen stumbling out to their cars." more ›

SAG: The 12 Days of...Strike Delay

SAG: The 12 Days of...Strike Delay

The Screen Actors Guild announced last night that they will put off having their members vote on a possible strike. Rather than send the ballots out on January 2nd, they have opted to wait until January 14th to mail them, cbs2.com is reporting. Many people in and out of the entertainment industry believe this is the wrong time for SAG to strike because of the obvious and immediate impact it will have on the many people who are employed in connection to television and film production. Further, the New York branch of SAG recently voiced their objection to the strike--a move SAG has been talking openly about for some time now, and particularly after negotiations with Hollywood studios failed. more ›

That'd be a $2.5 Billion Strike

This morning at the Marriott Downtown, Los Angles Development and Economic Corporation (LADEC) financial uber-guru Jack Kyser will be presenting the 2008-09 LAEDC Forecast Results, a 71-page document entailing the region's financial future. Highlighting a recession watch, the crumbling housing market, and growth opportunities such as tourism, one loosely dubbed as "Its NOT business as usual!" talks strike and its ill-economic impacts upon the city. From the Hollywood Reporter:

The figure includes lost wages from TV shows that were canceled and films that were put on hold as well as a plethora of support services, ranging from limo drivers to florists. Kyser suggested that the cancellation of the Golden Globes resulted in a $60 million shortfall for the community. more ›

TV Junkie: Weekend Edition

TV Junkie: Weekend Edition

Torchwood is a guilty pleasure and its new season starts tonight on the BBCA. If you've ever been in a foreign land and seen a slightly dated American TV program come on and felt that queasy embarrassment then you know what watching Torchwood is like. It's cheesy and over-the-top science fiction with British accents and the odd dashing American thrown in. Everyone is hyper-sexed and they don't seem to discriminate between whichever sex they are attracted to at a particular moment and despite all the sexiness and the fact that it's a Euro import, I'm always a little dismayed at the lack of skin and even more dismayed at some of the gay-'80s hairdos. Still, it's well shot, good for a few laughs, and the way things are going with US licensing of UK shows, you'll be seeing it on one of the big four before you know it. more ›

Can the Golden Globes Survive Without Actors?

Can the Golden Globes Survive Without Actors?

With yesterday's revelation that all 72 actors nominated for the upcoming Golden Globes are expected to not attend the January 13th ceremony, the appeal of the telecast comes sharply into question. The decision was made by the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) in order to show solidarity to their fellow strikers, and was announced by their union president Alan Rosenberg, who said: "After considerable outreach to Golden Globe actor nominees and their representatives over the past several weeks, there appears to be unanimous agreement that these actors will not cross WGA picket lines to appear on the Golden Globe Awards as acceptors or presenters," (E! Online). more ›
