For a dose of true local culture this weekend, consider this poetry festival hosted by the Pasadena Public Library. Now in its third year, this poetry powwow honors the most distinguished local poets from both the past and present, with guests reading not only their own poems but the works of their predecessors as well. The event will feature Laurel Ann Bogen presenting the work of Eloise Klein Healy, Ron Koertge presenting the work of Steve Kowit, and BH Fairchild reading Henri Coulette and Robert Mezey. 3 p.m., free.

If you consider the '68 Camaro a work of art, then this street festival is for you. Today the city of Santa Monica provides a backdrop for an auto show that not only features classic cars but music, glass-blowing, ceramics, painting, poetry, photography, wood carving, sculpture and jewelry making as well. The Mar Vista Recreation Center hosts an environmentally-friendly (and super kid-friendly) community Fall festival today with a mission to increase awareness of and participation in protecting the environment, and have some fun. There's also a morning puppet show promoting environmental awareness, as well as a "Kidz Go Green Zone" with nine inflatable slides, bouncers, arts and crafts using recycled materials, face painting, games, and a petting zoo. Tonight Pershing Square plays host to a free, multimedia art show that will literally light up the heart of downtown. The event showcases more than 50 artists whose installations, performances and projections utilize the medium of light, with many of the pieces incorporating park fixtures into the illumination. Music and refreshments will also be abundant at this family-friendly event.

Play "I Spy" in San Pedro this Saturday with a scavenger hunt run by Out of the Box Events. If you're still craving a scoop of Buff Monster, dip into Culver City's Corey Helford Gallery tonight as it plays host to the opening of his latest exhibit, "Heavy Metal Ice Cream Smile." This is the third visit to CHG for the once-rogue street artist turned pro, and per the man himself, "The few people that have already seen the pieces in the show all agree that this body of work is my best." Break out the bicycle and head to Santa Monica for an afternoon bike tour focusing on arts and culture in the area. Co-organized by C.I.C.L.E. (Cyclists Inciting Change thru LIVE Exchange) and led by their League Certified Cycling Instructors, consists of an 8-mile loop throughout the city of Santa Monica. Beginning at SMMoA, the tour will make its first stop at The Broad Stage and continue on to the Miles Playhouse. From there, bikers will travel to the 18th Street Arts Center and then back to SMMoA. The tour will proceed at a slow, social pace and obey all traffic laws. Registration is from 1-2 at SMMoA, workshops and bike checkup from 2-5, and the tour begins at 5. Nisei Week is a celebration of all things Japanese, and boasts a bunch of events for the entire week in LA's Little Tokyo. This weekend there's the Tanabata Festival and Street Faire with carnival rides and the Grand Parade. This year's Nisei Week Japanese Festival theme is "A Year of Celebrations" celebrating many centennial milestone anniversaries of community-based organizations and the golden anniversary of the first ever sister-city of the City of Los Angeles, Nagoya, Japan. Tonight at midnight, Johnny Cupcakes (it's t-shirts, not actual cupcakes) is presenting a showing of The Goonies at the Fairfax Cinemas (7907 Beverly Blvd.), and it's $10 for all seats. Not sure if you remember/know 1985's The Goonies? Here's the story: "With their neighborhood in danger of being bulldozed and turned into a golf course, a plucky group of misfit kids set out to save their beloved 'hood in the most logical way possible: by embarking on a quest to find lost pirate treasure, naturally. Of course the path to the loot is paved with perils, including a host of imaginative booby traps, awkward adolescent moments, and a band of bumbling crooks out to claim the treasure for themselves." Actor and musician Patrick Muldoon ("Starship Troopers," "Melrose Place," "Days of our Lives") hosts sketch comedy show “ACME Saturday Night” tonight at 8:00 at ACME Comedy Theatre. Muldoon will appear in several sketches with various “ACME Saturday Night” cast members, and perform some of his original music with fellow band member Neil Ives. The show is recorded in front of a studio audience and happens to stream live worldwide online, too. Studio audience tickets are available at the website for $10.00. Tonight from 7-11 p.m. head down to Chinatown to enjoy a free festival commemorating the anniversary of the establishment of “New Chinatown,” built when the original Chinatown enclave was taken over for the construction of Union Station. Actress April Hong and Comedian Ewan Chung will emcee the event featuring 40’s and 50’s era music and dancing to the music of the Pat Longo Big Band with vocalists Nancy Osborne and John-Eric Booth. There will also be casino games benefiting the Chinatown Service Center Youth Center, Chinese acrobats and martial artists, and a video presentation of historic photos. The event will also feature a salute to WWII Chinese American war veterans. It's free to check out, and a fun way to get out and see an important LA community and honor its history.

So apparently this is the "Best Festival Experience in Southern California During Memorial Day Weekend." Granted, it's one of the only ones...but anyhow...it does look good. Topanga Days is a 3 day Fair & Fund Raiser celebrating Music & The Arts, held on the Topanga Community Club grounds (1440 North Topanga Canyon Blvd), and runs 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. today, tomorrow, and Monday. This year's theme is "Topanga Roots Evolution." You can enjoy traditional festival games, eats, and attractions, and see some music (tonight's headliner is Blood, Sweat & Tears).

Tattered Fragments of the Map is a curatorial project materializing in multiple forms: an exhibition, a publication and a series of public programs. This project reveals mapping itself as a generative process of knowledge creation, a liberatory method for re-imagining and re-imaging our world, its built and natural environments, and the relationship between space and place. The exhibition kicks off tonight from 7-10 at g727 in Downtown, and the show runs until June 30th.

It's time for another installment of BoredLA’s art and music show, and they tell us that this time around, things are better than ever. More art, more music, more activities, and food! It's the opening of the I Like You(r Art) group exhibition featuring over a dozen talented local artists including David Phillips, Krystle Swaving, Chen Luoshu, Alex Pandel, Hannah Kim, Jonathan Bussiere of Hips and Hair, Mike Galasso, Cecelia Webber, Bryan Carberry, Katie Raphael, Ben Koffman, Alex Alkana, and more tba. Tien Nguyen, Alex Alkana, Poor Friends, and DJ IVANPARTY will entertain through out the night on the stage in the Ragazzi Room. Next door at Bacaro LA, they will be offering a special menu for the night featuring cheap food and cheap wine. It's all going down tonight, 7-11 p.m., and all it costs you is a $1 donation, which goes to keeping the BoredLA site running.

Single tickets for the 2009 summer season at the Hollywood Bowl go on sale today for their 88th season. The season spans 14 weeks, from June to September, and includes presentations of classical music by the Los Angeles Philharmonic; popular weekend shows with the Philharmonic and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra; jazz; world music; pop; rock; and special presentations, as well as family and educational programs. Head to the Box Office in the Bowl's center plaza (hey, you can run the stairs while you're there!) or, if you're a glutton for punishment, use TicketMaster. The Box Office is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today through May 10th, then Noon-6 p.m. beginning May 12th (Tu-Sun only).
