Sarah Jessica Parker Losing Touch with Reality, Wants SATC3

Sarah Jessica Parker Losing Touch with Reality, Wants SATC3

Sarah Jessica Parker, haven't you had enough? Let me be the first to tell you that I was one of the original "Sex and the City fans." Yes. I'm not ashamed. I participated in girl's nights, where we drank and watched the show on HBO. I was one of those people who went to opening night of the first movie (I think...OK, that may or may not have happened), and I dutifully went to SATC2, knowing that the chances of it being horrible and sad were high. more ›

Holiday Box Office Review: America Rejects Sex!

             + 1 more

Despite a huge amount of buzz amongst its core audience of superficial women, Sex and the City 2: I Am An Idiot was easily dispatched by the sleepy Shrek Forever After and the pointless Prince of Persia: Sands of Something or Other. The rancid tale of four middle-aged drag queens earned a mere $37.1M over the holiday weekend, just behind Persia's $37.8M and well off Shrek's mammoth $55.7M ($145.4M). Iron Man 2 continues to hang around ($20.6M | $279.1M), topping the disappointing Gladiator 2: Robin Hood ($13.6M | $86.3M). more ›

Weekend Movie Guide: The Female Bay Movie (e.g. evil)

             + 8 more

As if the original wasn't cynical and revolting enough, Sex and the City 2 has amped up the conspicuous consumption to levels sure to arouse Islamo-fascist anger. In this latest installment, the aging drag queens are off to the Middle East to spread their sense of entitlement to the naive and pathetic native population. Since Michael Bay isn't releasing a film until next year, I think it's safe to say that Sex and the City 2: More Special Effects than Transformers 2 will challenge Furry Vengeance for the title of worst film of the summer. more ›

DVD Tuesday: Who has Twilight fever? Who over 13?

I've said it before and I'll say it again: the Twilight books and movies provide an inherently evil model to young women about the kind of men they should date. Sure, Edward and Jacob are cute and all, but they are also violent and emotionally distant narcissists. Parents, don't be surprised when your cute little Cindy comes home with a black eye insisting, "But deep down he's really a good person!" Thank that lunatic Mormon Stephanie Meyer and her backwards ideas about sexuality. more ›

Box Office Review: Record-breaker!

James Cameron's Avatar broke 3-D records this weekend as it surged to a strong $73M opening to top the box office. Disney's The Princess and the Frog was a distant second with $12.M ($44.7M) just ahead of the still-strong The Blind Side ($10M | $164.7M). Did You Hear About the Morgans? disappointed in its debut ($7M) as the audience just doesn't appear to be there for Sarah Jessica Parker if she's not playing a vapid, money-grubbing whore. Teenage girls and lonely middle-aged women continue to flock to New Moon ($4.3M | $274.5M) while Afrikaaner ex-patriats are not flocking to Invictus ($4.1M | $15.8M). more ›

Weekend Movie Guide: Will Avatar Be Titanic?

             + 1 more

After months of speculation, audiences will finally be able to see Avatar today. Will it live up to all of the hype? How could it? I expect the usual Cameron film -- rigorously applied and dazzling visuals with a script aimed at those with an 8th grade reading level. I don't care if buzz hasn't been great -- I can't wait to see Nine. Folks, Daniel Day-Lewis is the best actor on the planet! You've got to see this one! Let's hope that a wrong is righted this year and Jeff Bridges is awarded an Oscar for his fantastic work in Crazy Heart. Long, long overdue. Emily Blunt is fast becoming the English Anne Hathaway: a young actress with serious chops who can anchor a film. Young Victoria looks sumptuous. The less said about Did You Hear About the Morgans? the better. Hugh Grant was once a wonderful comedic actor. Once. more ›

Weekend Movie Guide: I'll take Monsters over Aliens

Weekend Movie Guide: I'll take Monsters over Aliens

Does anyone else have the same feeling about Monsters vs. Aliens that I do? Namely, "Gee, I wish Pixar had made this movie instead of DreamWorks." It's either very sad or very cynical that two fine actors like Martin Donovan and Virginia Madsen are doing rote horror pics like The Haunting in Connecticut. The premise of 12 Rounds is that a criminal is manipulating a cop after the cop kills the criminal's girlfriend. Is it just me or does that seem like a reasonable response? Skip The Education of Charlie Banks and wait for next week's very similarly-toned Adventureland. Spinning Into Butter stars Sarah Jessica Parker. So...I won't be seeing it. more ›

Weekend Movie Guide: Like the Super Bowl...for Girls!

Weekend Movie Guide: Like the Super Bowl...for Girls!

There's really no point in me carping or teasing about Sex and the City since it's obviously not a movie for me. Early ticket sales are showing it to be a surprisingly big hit in its first weekend. Maybe it's success will convince HBO to get off its ass, throw out a big pile of money and put together features for on the big screen if Milch would explain what it was all about. more ›

Weekend Movie Guide: Fairy tales can come true...

Weekend Movie Guide: Fairy tales can come true...

Convincing people to go to a movie theater and see a documentary is a labor of love for me. Folks always protest that they'd rather see something else--something bigger and shinier!--but if they suck it up and buy the ticket for the doc they are invariably happy that they did. This weekend, a truly great documentary unspools in Los Angeles. It's called Young @ Heart and it's about a group of elderly New Englanders who love to sing, well, Coldplay, Sonic Youth, The Ramones, etc. That's right--it's about senior citizens who live to rock. See it. more ›

Kerry and Kutcher

Let's face it. People in California have pretty much resigned themselves to the fact that come November 2nd, the electoral votes from this great state will most likely be piling up for Mr. John Kerry. It's the result of having a very liberal state which almost always ends up voting for the Democratic candidate. That's the reality, and that's fine. more ›

Chocolates for Charity

Chocolates for Charity

Starting at 5:00 PM today, Godiva Chocolatier will open bidding on Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?, a series of five special dinners in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, San Francisco and Boston. The winners of these dinners will be treated to dinner with a celebrity, cooked by a celebrity chef, with proceeds from the events donated to a different charity in each city. Further, each chef has agreed to prepare a menu focused on a specific Godiva truffle flavor. (Personally, LAist would gladly take just the truffles.) more ›
