As the baseball season has ended here in Southern California, Santa Anita opens their 24-day Autumn Meet on Friday as they lead up to the Breeders’ Cup Classic hosted at Churchill Downs on Nov. 4 and 5. But the big day of the weekend is Saturday. Not only are they hosting four Grade I stakes with the winners automatically qualifying for a spot in the Breeders’ Cup, but they’re also hosting its fourth Gourmet Food Truck Festival.

New Owners of Santa Anita Park and Rick Caruso May Revive High-End Retail Development
It's once more into the starting gates for retail development mogul Rick Caruso, who will enter into talks today with the new owners of the Santa Anita Park, reports the Pasadena Star-News. They may opt to revive a plan for an upscale retail project in the racetrack's parking lot which had been voided five years ago when the proposal was found to not be in the best financial interest for the racetrack itself.

This Saturday is the 72nd Santa Anita Derby. Gates open at 10 am, and the first race is at noon. The winner of the big race will be eligible to race in the Kentucky Derby, the first jewel of the Triple Crown races, in May. The best known winner of the Derby, Affirmed in 1978, was the last horse to win the Triple Crown.
