It’s amazing what a simple concept like shooting the puck towards the net can do for a team. The Kings finally got a victory against one of the upper echelon teams on the Western Conference with a 2-0 shutout win against the San Jose Sharks.
Kings Shot Mentality Pays Off Against Sharks
LAst Night's Action: Dan Ellis Saves Ducks in San Jose
Anaheim Ducks defeat San Jose Sharks 3-2. The Sharks’ pregame show was happy that Ducks’ no. 1 goaltender Jonas Hiller was given the day off to be replaced by Dan Ellis. All Ellis did was make 41 saves, 15 of which came in a third period that saw the Ducks get very sloppy. The Ducks are now 4-1-0 early in this season.
LAst Night's Action: Ducks Shake off Sharks, Rust
Anaheim Ducks defeat San Jose Sharks 1-0. Neither team played since Saturday. However with the Ducks had an excuse: they played two in Europe. The Sharks opened the season at home last Saturday and has rested since then. So what’s their excuse?
Kings Fight Until Bitter End
With one swing of the stick from Joe Thornton 2:22 in overtime the Kings’ season was done. The San Jose Sharks ousted the Kings 4-3 in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs in six games.
Defense Falters Again as Kings on the Brink of Elimination
Done and over. Like a piece of overcooked steak, so are the Kings hopes in this first-round playoff series against the San Jose Sharks. After blowing a four-goal lead on Tuesday to lose 6-5 in overtime, the Kings lost their poise down the stretch as they lose 6-3 and trail the series three games to one with Game 5 in San Jose.
Kings Keep Looking Ahead
How do you come back from one of the epic choke jobs in the history of the Stanley Cup Playoffs? By doing your best impression of the chorus line from Annie. In the day after the San Jose Sharks capped a four-goal rally to defeat the Kings 6-5 on a Devin Setoguchi overtime goal at 3:08 the Kings are determined not to look back.
11 on 11th as Kings Choke 4-0 Lead to Sharks
A little tiny hockey game played on 11th and Figueroa turned into the game of the Stanley Cup Playoffs so far. It was the 11th goal of the game on 11th street that cause the Kings to choke a 4-0 lead early in the second period to lose to the San Jose Sharks 6-5 in 3:09 in overtime. The Sharks now take a 2-1 series lead in this best-of-seven playoff series.
Kershaw Can't Stem the Losses as Dodgers Lose Five in a Row
Things are starting to get dark at Dodger Stadium. There is a 9.2% decrease in overall ticket sales after their seventh home game (324,989 in 2010; 294,723 in 2011.) The Dodgers have lost five of their last six games. So what better remedy for one night than a healthy dose of Clayton Kershaw who seemed ready for the challenge?
Kuroda Untamed in Dodgers Loss
What was a wild, wild, wild night for Dodgers’ starter Hiroki Kuroda turned out to be a snooze for the St. Louis Cardinals as the Dodgers lost the first game of their eight-game home stand 9-5.
Kings Sink Sharks in a Shootout (AKA There's Something About the STAPLES Center)
With the Western Conference standings tighter than a stuffed sausage, it’s inadvisable to give away a point especially to a team six points ahead of you in the standings. The Kings did just that as they let a 3-2 lead slip away in the final five seconds of regulation against the San Jose Sharks on Patrick Marleau’s goal, however they managed to win the game in a shootout 4-3 despite some controversy.
LAst Night's Action: Bulls Clip Clippers Home Win Streak
Chicago Bulls defeat LA Clippers 106-88. The Clippers came into the game with a Los Angeles record nine-game winning streak at home. But the impressive Chicago Bulls came into STAPLES Center and avenged their Dec. 18 loss.
Kings Streak into All-Star Break
This game against the division rivals San Jose Sharks was really important to the Kings. For one, they had just started to come out of their awful January having won their last two games. Also a win in regulation would allow them to vault over the Sharks in the standings. However most importantly they wanted to keep the momentum going for the last game before the All Star Break and their subsequent 10-game road trip which will keep them away from STAPLES Center most of February.
And in a playoff type atmosphere, the King came back to win the game in a shootout 3-2.
LAst Night's Action: Kings Shark-Bitten
San Jose Sharks defeat LA Kings 6-3. The Kings came into the game leading the Western Conference in points and with a six-game win streak, but they came out flat-footed up in the Shark Tank in San Jose. The Kings, thanks to the Sharks forecheck, kept turning the puck over on their blue line. Of course goalie Jonathan Bernier’s inability to freeze the puck didn’t help things either.
LAst Night's Action: Lakers Almost Bit by Wolves
LA Lakers defeat Minnesota Timberwolves 99-94. Being given the day off on Monday after their 25-point demolition of the Portland Trail Blazers Sunday night, the Lakers looked like they were still taking a day off as they played the Timberwolves.
LAst Night's Action: Oregon Topples Trojans
Oregon Ducks defeat USC Trojans 53-32. The Trojans made a valiant attempt to stay with the Ducks, but the Ducks’ offense was just too much to overcome as the Trojans fell to No. 1 Oregon 53-32.
LAst Night's Action: Clippers, Kings Win Big
LA Clippers defeat Portland Trail Blazers 105-95. Chris Kaman once again came up big with 20 points and Marcus Camby grabbed 15 boards to lead the Clippers over the infirmed Trail Blazers. Going into the fourth quarter the Clippers led by only four points. They went on an 18-6 run holding the Blazers scoreless for four minutes during that run. Kaman has been dominant this season scoring 20 or more points in 10 of his last 11 games. He is currently the Western Conference’s leading scoring center.
LAst Night's Action: Kings Whoop Sharks, Ducks Can't Hold Wild
LA Kings defeat San Jose Sharks 6-4. The Kings exploded on the reigning President's Cup winner San Jose Sharks jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the second period. But then the penalties mounted and the Sharks took advantage scoring four powerplay goals. However 26 seconds after the Shark's Dany Heatley scored that last powerplay goal, Teddy Purcell found the puck after a faceoff and beat goalie Thomas Greiss. Davis Drewskie capped off the scoring with 1:19 remaining on an empty-net goal, the first goal of his NHL career. Center Anze Kopitar scored the fourth goal for the Kings in the second period and notched two assists. It wasn't a pretty game and the Kings need to really work on their penalty kill. But two points is two points for their first win of the NHL season after an embarrassing loss to the Phoenix Coyote on Saturday.
LAst Night's Action: Bring on the Rockets and Octopus
LA Lakers defeat Utah Jazz 107-96. When the Lakers led by 22 points, it really did look like the Lakers would shut the door on the Jazz. But it wouldn't be a Laker win without the opponent making a comeback, wouldn't it? The Jazz's second unit made a strong comeback in the fourth quarter cutting it down to six points late the in quarter mostly due to the effort of backup guard Ronnie Price. Well that and the Lakers refusal to play defense down the stretch. But once the starters came back in with five minutes left in the game, they clamped down a gave the Lakers the victory. Kobe Bryant was his usual self with 31 points and Lamar Odom was a complete beast with 26 points and 15 rebounds. The Lakers win the series four games to one and will face the winner of the Houston Rockets - Portland Trail Blazers series.
LAst Night's Action: Lakers Lose Game Three
Utah Jazz defeat LA Lakers 88-86. Everyone knew it was going to be ugly, and boy was it. The Lakers couldn't score in the first quarter, and Carlos Boozer just ate up rebounds. In fact Boozer tied a franchise playoff record getting 22 rebounds. Trailing by as many as 10 in the first quarter the Lakers came back to trail by only four at the half. But the third quarter was all Lakers as they came back and led by as many as 13. But the Jazz started to chip away trading the lead with the Lakers in the final minutes. The Lakers would tie the game leaving 11 seconds on the clock which would give Deron Williams plenty of time to make the winning jumper with two seconds. Andrew Bynum who came into the game complaining about pain in his knee would foul out in the third quarter scoring only four points in seven minutes. Kobe Bryant started out ice cold but would eventually score 18 points while Lamar Odom was a monster posting a double-double with 21 points and 14 rebounds. I expected the Lakers to lose this game, but they will rebound on Saturday to win game four.
LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Sweep Aside the Giants
LA Dodgers defeat San Francisco Giants 7-2. The week is always rosier when the Dodgers sweep the Giants. Eric Stults getting another start in the placed of injured Hiroki Kuroda went five innings giving up two runs on five hits and three walks with two strikeouts. It's really hard to follow Chad Billingsley and Clayton Kershaw who combined for 24 strikeouts in the first two games of the series. But the bullpen atoned for Wednesday's game with James McDonald, Ronald Belisario and Will Ohman combined for four scoreless innings. So far the pitching is holding up better than expected.
LAst Night's Action: Kings Show Grit in Shootout Loss to Sharks
San Jose Sharks defeat LA Kings 3-2 (SO). The Kings really brought their A-game at the Staples Center against the best team in the league. They took an early 2-0 lead in the first period, but the Sharks naturally came back to tie things up in the second period. However the Kings stayed with it and kept the Sharks scoreless for the remainder of the game. The Kings get a point for the overtime loss, and they are really showing the promise of good things to come in the future.
Los Angeles Kings Blanked in Home Opener
The Los Angeles Kings hosted a street party to welcome the 2008-09 NHL hockey season on Sunday at Staples Center. It was their first home game and the first chance for fans to see some new faces in the line-up including first-round pick Drew Doughty, rookie Matt Moulson and newcomer Jarret Stoll. The team also introduced their new "Ice Crew" of hot females who scrape excess snow off the ice during breaks. The San Jose Sharks, including ex-King Rob Blake, spoiled the homecoming and shut out the Kings 1-0 after two LA goals were called back by the referees,
LAst Night's Action: Beckham Scores!
LA Galaxy defeat San Jose Earthquakes 2-0. The Galaxy still looked to be reeling from Sunday night's 4-0 loss against the Colorado Rapids when San Jose scored a goal in the second minute. Fortunately for the Galaxy the goal was waved off by an off-sides call, and the Galaxy went on to score two goals in the first half. David Beckham scored his first goal in the MLS in the ninth minute assisted by Landen Donavon and Donavon scored a goal in the 37th minute assisted by Beckham in the Galaxy's victory.
Dallas Remembers Why They Love the Kings
If Heath Biter failed to give you a rotten feeling about the Kings' chances this year, how does a 5-1 drubbing to a division rival treat you? To make matters worse, the points weren't taken by, say, the San Jose Sharks or Anaheim Ducks - two Pacific Division sides boasting some of the best odds of winning the Cup. Instead, the LA players had their asses handed to them by the Dallas Stars, a squad predicted by many pundits to join the Kings on the golf links come playoff time.
LAst Night's Action: Guess Who's Back, Back Again ...
With a major project concluded, I'm back to regular writing. Hockey is back, too. You can watch a free game downtown tonight. Angels 10, Devil Rays 7 - The last time the Halos played small ball this well, they won a World Series. They could be headed back, with their magic number down to five. The Angels piled up double digits against the Devils without a home run on Monday, the 11th time they've reached...
LA Kings Throwing A Downtown Party
Do you live downtown? Can you prove it? Then get yourself to Staples Center tomorrow night. The Los Angeles Kings are throwing a party just for you. I’m not sure how the Kings define “party”, but starting at 6:30, the 2007-2008 team will be introduced. AEG President Tim Lieweke and all-time Kings great Luuuuuuuuuuc Robitaille will also be present to tell you all about exhilarating real estate developments and about how exciting this hockey...
So, That Was a Good Win...
The David vs. Goliath analogy is made way too often in sports. But, not many people expected the Kings not to endure a bit of an ass-whomping (technical sports term) at the hands of the San Jose Sharks on Monday night.
We -ist across the nation
LAist has so much fun this week! They go to E3, where they overhear the timeless remark "Man, this is where nerdy girls get laid." Is that a promise? They also give us this week's best CDs and make us realize that LA is the best place to use Zillow.
