New York Mets defeat LA Dodgers 5-3. If you have nothing good to say, don’t say anything at all. To quote manager Don Mattingly after the game, “We have to keep going, and we have to play in a way that tells ourselves that we are going somewhere. That’s what we have to do.” The Dodgers are 9-18 in their last 27 games dating exactly one month.
LAst Night's Action: At Least Chivas USA Won
LAst Night's Action: Kings Get Sloppy Win against 'Canes
LA Kings defeat Carolina Hurricanes 4-3. With Head Coach Terry Murray deciding to save goalie Jonathan Quick for division foe Phoenix Coyotes Thursday night, a shaky Jonathan Bernier had a tough go of it for the first two periods having not played since Oct. 10, 2010 in Calgary in a 3-1 loss. Thankfully he loosened up in the third period and the offense bailed him out for the 4-3 win over the Carolina Hurricanes.
LAst Night's Action: Rangers Too Hot for Angels
Texas Rangers defeat LA Angels 3-2. Angels’ starter Jered Weaver (L, 9-6) who came into the game with a 1-3 record at Rangers Ballpark at Arlington with a 4.59 ERA gave up a solo homer to Michael Young in the first inning. The Angels came back in the fifth inning when Maicer Izturis hit a double off of Cliff Lee (W, 9-4) that bounced off the end of left fielder Josh Hamilton’s glove to center fielder Julio Borbon that scored Hideki Matsui. The Rangers pulled back ahead in the sixth inning with an RBI double by Hamilton and a sacrifice fly by Bengie Molina. Mike Napoli got the Angels to within a run with a solo shot off of Lee in the seventh, however that would be the closest they would get. Lee ended up pitching into the ninth inning with closer Neftali Feliz getting the final two outs and his 26th save of the season.
Sacha Kljestan Sets the Tone for Chivas USA
Chivas USA captain Sacha Kljestan scored a beauty of a goal last night from about 25 yards out to open the scoring in a 3 - 2 win by Chivas USA over the San Jose Earthquakes, in what is arguably the team's best 90 minutes of the year.
Chivas USA Hoping for Home Advantage
Three points. It may seem like a trivial quantity, but it sure would go a long way as far as Chivas USA is concerned.
After registering their first victory two weeks ago against New York at the Home Depot Center, the red-and-white then took a 3 - 0 beating in Houston a mere week later. The positives displayed against New York seemed to quickly vanish in the Houston match, leaving Head Coach Martin Vasquez searching for answers.
Galaxy and Chivas USA Fall Short
Galaxy and Chivas USA drop respective games by similar scoreline as the MLS season quickly approaches its halfway point and SuperLiga action got underway.
LAst Night's Action: Angels Back on Winning Track
LA Angels defeat Baltimore Orioles 6-5. The Angels led the game 5-1 with two outs in the top of the ninth. What happens? Oh Francisco Rodriguez just blew the save (with help from a Mark Teix-error) to tie the game up 5-5. But the Angels came back in the bottom of the ninth with the bases loaded. Oriole's closer George Sherrill walked Chone Figgins with the walk off walk. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. The Angels are the first team in the majors to 70 wins.
LAst Night's Action: Beckham Scores!
LA Galaxy defeat San Jose Earthquakes 2-0. The Galaxy still looked to be reeling from Sunday night's 4-0 loss against the Colorado Rapids when San Jose scored a goal in the second minute. Fortunately for the Galaxy the goal was waved off by an off-sides call, and the Galaxy went on to score two goals in the first half. David Beckham scored his first goal in the MLS in the ninth minute assisted by Landen Donavon and Donavon scored a goal in the 37th minute assisted by Beckham in the Galaxy's victory.
Landin' in LA
Donovan coming to the Galaxy is akin to the Lakers signing Shaq or the Angels signing Vlad Guerrero. Donovan might the best American soccer player, having led Team USA to the quarterfinals of the 2002 World Cup, and single-handedly led the San Jose Earthquakes to two MLS Cup titles. At 23, the best is yet to come.
