Photo by maxedaperture via Flickr Remember Walkscore, the website where you type in your address and the spit out a score rating the walkability of your neighborhood? Today, they released America's Most Walkable Neighborhoods and Los Angeles came out at #9. #9?!?! Well, it's not for the city as a whole, but rather for certain neighborhoods, specifically Mid City West, Downtown, Hollywood. Ahead one step of Los Angeles is Long Beach at number 8......

In Sunday's wee hours, an unusual car chase took place on our local freeways, between the LA County Sheriff and a Vons big rig. According to the San Jose Mercury News:Officials say the hourlong pursuit began when LA County Sheriff's deputies responded to a report that a big rig was weaving. Sheriff's Sergeant Dan Raimo says the driver failed to yield and headed onto Highway 101. The big rig eventually stopped near Cerritos and......

When the chips are down and you need cash to settle up some legal matters, unloading some real estate is a good move. Which is precisely why the Roman Catholic Archdiocese has sold off their 3424 Wilshire Boulevard Archdiocesan Catholic Center to Jamison Properties for a cool $31 million. Of course, that $31 million is just a drop in a bucket with a pricetag of $660 million for the church's past sins. According to the......

What started off as some goofing off on the escalators at the Hollywood & Highland shopping complex turned deadly last night, when an unnamed man fell to his death. He had been trying to slide down the bannister of one of the upper escalators when he reportedly lost his balance and fell several stories onto another escalator below. The fall caused a severe head injury, and the man was pronounced dead at the hospital. It......

US Figure Skating champion Christopher Bowman, 40, was found dead yesterday in a room at the Budget Inn in North Hills. The former child actor and successful figure skater in the late 80s and early 90s was also known for his powerful struggles with alcohol and drug use. His death is being investigated as a possible overdose. A fire that took place last night at San Jose Edison Academy, a West Covina charter school, is......

A London vacation for $900 -- airfare and hotel? Cancun for $500? I got an email alert this morning about big after-holiday airfare sales -- and as a frequent traveler who is often frustrated by the price of airline tickets, I jumped at the chance to research some sweet mid-winter vacations. Via Expedia, if you book now and travel by mid-March, you can snag very cheap round-trip tickets out of LAX for places like......

Lakers 122, Suns 115 - Andrew Bynum's growth as a player has been the Laker fans' biggest gift this year, and they celebrated on Christmas by watching the youngster drop a career high 28 points along with 12 rebounds and 4 assists ... All five starters for both teams scored in double digits, with Kobe's 38 leading the way. He seems as intent and driven as ever, though it's still difficult to really trust the......

Lakers 103, Bulls 91 - Los Angeles spread the scoring around to down Chicago. Sasha Vujacic scored 19, Kobe Bryant had 18, and Lamar Odom had 17 (plus 16 rebounds). Raptors 80, Clippers 77 - As if the Clip Show wasn't missing enough performers, Cuttino Mobley was out sick. Both teams shot under 40% from the field. UCLA 77, Western Illinois 52 - In a breeze of a game, K-Love was 5-of-5 for 16 points.......

Avalanche 4, Kings 2 - The Avs buried Los Angeles with two quick goals about a minute apart in the first period, and never looked back. The Kings managed a mere 21 shots on goal, and Colorado sent them to their fourth straight loss. USC 83, Delaware State 54 - This one was almost painful to watch. About the only highlight from this drubbing was the USC band repeatedly counting down the Delaware game clock......

Lakers 113, Clippers 92 - Kobe Bryant, again playing through pain (this time it was a pulled groin), sunk 32 points to lead the Lakers to victory. The Clippers also had players dinged up, and a host of them (including Elton Brand) never made it onto the court. Chris Kaman won the battle of the big men statisticly with 18 points and 16 rebounds, but young Andew Bynum (14 points, 9 rebounds, 6 blocks) performed......

Bruins 83, Colonials 60 - UCLA (ranked #1 by ESPN/USA Today and #2 by the AP) hammered George Washington at home and got a lot of players involved. Darren Collison returned from a pre-season knee injury to score 14 and Alfred Aboya had six points despite a broken bone under his eye. Three other players scored in double digits, including highly touted freshman Kevin Love who had 11 points and 11 rebounds. Kings 3, Sharks......

Lakers - The Lakers punished Detroit with 41 points in the 4th-quarter on Friday. Six Lakers hit double-digits in the game. They stayed hot through Sunday, when they destroyed Chicago 106-78. Five reserves hit double-digits on that night, and the bench outscored the starters 73-33. The Bull's bench, by comparison, had 31. Clippers - With their full roster back, the Warriors put together a 122-105 drubbing of the Clippers on Friday. The Clippers fell again......

Orlando Bloom will not be prosecuted after an October 12th incident in which he injured his two passengers in a car crash involving parked cars. He said he was avoiding a photographer who suddenly changed lanes. Seeing these paparazzi in action, we suspect it was them who caused the crash, most likely on purpose for some higher dollar photo sales. Starting from last week today, the San Jose Mercury News has a great timeline......

If Heath Biter failed to give you a rotten feeling about the Kings' chances this year, how does a 5-1 drubbing to a division rival treat you? To make matters worse, the points weren't taken by, say, the San Jose Sharks or Anaheim Ducks - two Pacific Division sides boasting some of the best odds of winning the Cup. Instead, the LA players had their asses handed to them by the Dallas Stars, a......

No sex in the champagne room. No crying in baseball. No place like home. No alcoholic beverages served after the 7th inning. Add another to the list: No smoking in multi-unit, multi-story residences in Belmont, California. That’s right, when the law takes effect it will be illegal to smoke cigarettes in your home if you share common floors or ceilings with other units. John Locke would be fuckin pissed. Located one hour south of San Francisco and 45 minutes from San Jose Airport, Costanoa Coastal Lodge and Camp is a self-penned “eco adventure resort” located in Pescadero, Calif. The relaxing vacation spot uses sustainable methods to run their operation, from recycling to choosing local produce for the California coastal cuisine they serve in the restaurant. There’s free wi-fi but cell phone service was (fortunately) sparse. To get there, you have to take Highway 1......

A few months ago I came home from work to find one of my roommates sitting on the couch with a glass of wine in hand. From the time I first met this friend, one thing was very clear: he loved wine. In fact, he had a very special relationship with one brand in particular, Charles Shaw. Good ole' Two Buck Chuck was a loyal friend to my roommate all through college. Chuck had......

Angels 9, Mariners 5 - With the best record in baseball, the Halos have secured at least a tie for their third AL West crown in four years. They can close it out tomorrow night (or pretty much anytime in the next couple weeks) and be the first team in baseball to clinch a playoff birth. There were some fireworks on the field on Thursday (Vladimir Guerrero popped one out of the park) and on......

Angels 2, Devil Rays 1 - LAnaheim picked up a second straight 2-1 victory thanks to another solid outing from their rotation. Ervin Santana had 10Ks, and the Halos swept Tampa Bay to inch just a little bit closer to their third pennant in four years. Sitting at 90 wins, their magic number is down to three. Life isn't so sweet for the Devil Rays, who dressed their rookies in Hooters attire. Welcome to the......

Rockies 3, Dodgers 1 - Olmedo Saenz cranked a pinch-hit home run in the seventh, but the Dodger's offense was otherwise anemic. Rockies starter Jeff Francis had 10 Ks. Rockies 9, Dodgers 8 - Just when they were looking to turn things around in the second game of the double header, Takashi Saito allowed a two run dinger in the bottom of the ninth. He wasn't the only Dodger pitcher to have a rocky night.......

With a major project concluded, I'm back to regular writing. Hockey is back, too. You can watch a free game downtown tonight. Angels 10, Devil Rays 7 - The last time the Halos played small ball this well, they won a World Series. They could be headed back, with their magic number down to five. The Angels piled up double digits against the Devils without a home run on Monday, the 11th time they've reached......

Do you live downtown? Can you prove it? Then get yourself to Staples Center tomorrow night. The Los Angeles Kings are throwing a party just for you. I’m not sure how the Kings define “party”, but starting at 6:30, the 2007-2008 team will be introduced. AEG President Tim Lieweke and all-time Kings great Luuuuuuuuuuc Robitaille will also be present to tell you all about exhilarating real estate developments and about how exciting this hockey......

Around 4pm today a one-acre fire broke out within sight of the Griffith Park Observatory. ABC has been running indepth coverage, although there is very little news online and no photos available at this time. Hikers have been evacuated. No, it's not some crazy Southwest or Virgin deal. This is the Magic Bus as the LA Times calls it. A new nonstop line will roll into Los Angeles next week, serving seven cities with a handful of fares as low as $1. Megabus, a subsidiary of Coach USA, will carry passengers from L.A. to San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland, Las Vegas, San Diego and Phoenix. The fleet will follow routes well served by......

Now that his extramarital shenanigans with Telemundo newscaster Mirthala Salinas have firmly supplanted his other accomplishments in the eyes of many Angelenos, pundits' tongues are a-wagging over the potential ramifications to his long-term mayoral career. Or, put more simply, can he move beyond Mirthala? While some commentators, such as San Jose State's Larry Gerston, have already written off Villaraigosa's future prospects, advising him not to "make any plans to run for the Democratic nomination in......

Even in death, Sopranos fans are trying to prove that their favorite character is dead. On Sunday the critically-acclaimed mob drama The Sopranos wrapped up their series with a controversial ending that has left fans either applauding or jeering, but it seems like the fans who loved the show the most are the ones who are looking for clues to prove that the main character, Tony Soprano, was whacked. Many are claiming that there......

Dodgers 4, Blue Jays 3, 10 - It was a strange interleague game against Toronto. Brad Penny allowed one run in 7 and 2/3 innings, but got no decision. Takashi Saito blew the save, but didn't lose the game. Rudy Saenez only faced one batter, but it was enough for the win. Olmedo Saenz finally won it with a two-run blast in the bottom of the tenth. Angels 10, Cardinals 6 - The Halos hung......

State Route 99 cuts straight through the Central Valley to Sacramento via Bakersfield and Fresno (see map below). D.C. United 2, Chivas USA 1 - The MLS gets no respect. ESPN and SI.com lump it in with their general soccer coverage. Yahoo! Sports has them listed just below the WNBA. They might not party like their Euro counterparts, but LAist.com is willing to give Chivas USA top billing tonight. So here it goes ... after a scoreless first half, winless D.C. United found the net twice (the second on a penalty kick) and......
