Asian Gang's SGV Pot Growhouse Goes Up in Smoke
A fire in a home in the North San Gabriel Valley led authorities to discover a marijuana growing operation of about 1,700 plants, according to the Star-News. The fire was sparked by a compost pile in the living room. In the San Gabriel Valley, authorities say it's a growing practice to see homes gutted to make room for equipment and marijuana plants that will become the pot sold at dispensaries. An LA County Sheriff's detective says these operations are run by "Asian Gangs" who rent the homes and cultivate the crops. No arrests were made, though a man was seen running from the scene when the fire broke out.

An Environmental Protection Agency division overseeing the cleanup of a 190-acre Monterey Park landfill shuttered in 1984 has received more funding, the federal agency announced today. A settlement of $3.87 million from 12 companies that dumped hazardous materials and wastes at the site between 1948 and its closing has been completed.
Full Funding for 11 Miles of Gold Line Extension Approved, Groundbreaking in June
Funding for the first phase of the Gold Line Foothill Extension was approved this morning by the Metro Board of Directors, setting in motion work that will allow for a June groundbreaking. Today's vote moved $690 million, raised from the voter-approved Measure R sales tax, to the coffers of the Gold Line Construction Authority, which will build 11.3 miles of light rail track, extending the line from Pasadena to Azusa, generally along the 210 freeway.

The Station Fire may be 56 percent contained, but its smoke is still affecting air in the San Gabriel Valley and the San Gabriel Mountains. "Air quality may reach Unhealthy levels, or higher, due to high concentrations of fine particulates in smoke-impacted areas," the South Coast Air Quality Management District announced this afternoon. With temperatures expected to rise to triple digits today, the Morris Fire north of Azusa has burned through three square miles of the Angeles National Forest and is now 45 percent contained, according to authorities this morning. The fire began Tuesday afternoon and quickly spread into dry brush of San Gabriel Canyon and sending smoke into the Los Angeles basin that may stick around until Sunday.

Dense Fog Moves to the Valley
Good news for LAX: "The Marine layer has lifted across the L.A. County Coastal Communities and as a result, visibilities have improved over the coast," reported the National Weather Service shortly before 1:30 a.m. this morning. Last night's fog diverted one plane yesterday morning to Ontario Airport with passengers sitting on board for around nine hours.
Dense Fog Creeps Over Southern California
An "urgent weather message" from the National Weather Service at 2:45 a.m. warns of a dense fog advisory throughout portions of the Los Angeles region including downtown, coastal areas in LA County, San Gabriel Valley, Santa Clarita Valley, Ventura and Santa Barbara. It could reduce freeway and roadway visibility to "one quarter mile or less through mid morning," the service says. The advisory officially will end at 9 a.m., so enjoy it while it lasts.

I have taken up that challenge – most recently at Noodle House in Monterey Park, which has gotten a lot of internet buzz recently. Gold Vs. Purple: Advocates Choose Their Trains
Next week, the Metro board will vote on two very important issues. One will put a half-cent sales tax increase, that would raise funds for public transit, on November's ballot. The other is the Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP), a document guiding public transit in Los Angeles County for years to come.
