With the Dodgers offense being about as consistent as that of a teenaged boy’s face, the Dodgers (81-57) decided to bring the bad offense to the game against the San Diego Padres (61-77) in front of 47,528 fans losing 4-3.
With the Dodgers offense being about as consistent as that of a teenaged boy’s face, the Dodgers (81-57) decided to bring the bad offense to the game against the San Diego Padres (61-77) in front of 47,528 fans losing 4-3.
In a highlight-laden game, a storm of Dodger-good and Padre-bad netted the Los Angeles Dodgers (81-56) a 7-4 victory.
It was supposed to be an easy week at Chavez-Ravine. The NL West’s two cellar-dwells were coming to face the Dodgers for seven games.
LA Angels defeat Kansas City Royals 2-1. Royals pitching confounded the Angels most of the night. Instead of seeing Gil Meche who had to be scratched because of shoulder fatigue, they got Robinson Tejada. With one out in the first inning, Maicer Izturis hit a single. From there Tejada retired the following 15 batters. Finally in the eighth inning Vladimir Guerrero came through on a bases loaded single that scored two. Jered Weaver kept the affair close only giving up one run in the fourth inning. He went seven innings giving up nine hits and an intentional walk with six strikeouts.
Thanks to no offense and a couple of bad defensive plays, the Dodgers were defeated by the last place San Diego Padres 2-0. Padres starter Wade LeBlanc (1-1), who was recalled to the Padres from AAA Portland Beavers on August 29, pitched six shut out innings giving up only two singles and three walks while striking out two on 96 pitches. He had previously pitched against the Dodgers in Dodger Stadium twice last season losing both decision while racking up a 16.30 ERA.
“I can’t wait to get to the field,” Dodgers slugger Manny Ramirez said of his 50-game suspension. “I miss the game the game that I love.”
San Diego Padres defeat LA Dodgers 3-1. Ah the frustration of youth. Clayton Kershaw could not find the strike zone to save his life. He gave up three runs in his short 2 2/3 innings which in reality felt much longer. After giving up a Dodger run in the first inning thanks to shoddy defense behind him, Kevin Correia just kept getting the Dodgers hitters out picking them off like a sniper. While the Padres bullpen was shaky, they did just enough to prevent another Dodger run to score. As for Kershaw he's young. He'll be all right. As for the Dodgers they head to Dallas to face the Andruw Jones and the Texas Rangers in interleague play.
LA Dodgers defeat San Diego Padres 8-5. James McDonald is a young pitcher, and it has shown so far this season. In this game he got into trouble in the first inning but was able to get out unscathed. But the second inning was a different story altogether when he couldn't find the strike zone. He walked four giving up three runs and was pulled after two outs in the second inning for 2006 World Series Champion Jeff Weaver. I was half expecting to see Jim Tracy in the dug out there for a second. But Weaver pitched four scoreless innings after being called up earlier in the day from AAA Albuquerque. Meanwhile the Dodger offense did what it does coming through for the win. The Dodgers are now 7-0 at home to start the season for the first time since 1947 when they went 9-0 at Ebbets Field.
LA Lakers defeat Denver Nuggets 116-102. Andrew Bynum played in his first game for the Lakers since being injured in January in Memphis posting up 16 points and seven rebounds in 21 minutes played. All in all not a bad return for the big guy. Meanwhile Pau Gasol gobbled everything in the paint scoring 27 points while grabbing 19 rebounds, 11 of which were of the offense variety. Kobe Bryant did his thing with 33 points and the Lakers are within 1/2 a game of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
LA Dodgers defeat LA Dodgers 5-2. Chad Billingsley had a rough fifth inning walking the first three batters and somehow getting out with only two runs. But Bills came back in the sixth inning getting the meat of the Padres order, Brian Giles, Adrian Gonzalez and Kevin Kouzmanoff, out in order. Manny Ramirez went 2-for-4 with a walk, a double and three RBIs, and Casey Blake got his first hit of the season - a solo home run in the second inning to left field. After that fifth inning, the Dodgers took the lead after the Manny double bringing Rafael Furcal and Orlando Hudson home. Manny would score when James Loney singled to right. A note: the Dodger bullpen has not given up a run so far this season.
LA Lakers defeat Sacramento Kings 122-104. I worried about this game a couple of weeks ago, and after falling behind 12 points in the first quarter it seemed justified. But the Lakers hung up 40 in the second quarter while only allowing the Kings to score 18, and they were on their way to a rout. Pau Gasol led the Lakers with 26 points and 12 rebounds while Kobe Bryant scored 22 points. Remember at the beginning of the decade when all that could heard at Arco Arena were cowbells and chants of "Beat LA"? Now they've been replaced with MVP chants to Kobe Bryant. So sad. The Lakers are now half a game behind Cleveland for the best overall record in the NBA.
LA Dodgers defeat San Diego Padres 4-1. Manny Ramirez went 0-for-3 with a walk and scored a run in the third inning thanks in large part to an errant pick-off play by Padres ace Jake Peavy. The game started off on the right foot for the Dodgers when Rafael Furcal and Orlando Hudson led off the game with consecutive singles. Matt Kemp would close out the scoring with a towering home run to deep center field in the seventh inning. Kemp also robbed Jody Gerut of a line drive double when he made a diving catch into the sunlight in the sixth inning. Despite having a shaky spring, Jonathan Broxton smoked the ball by the last three Padres hitters striking out two for a perfect ninth. This marks the second time Peavy has lost to the Dodgers, the first since 2003 when Kevin Brown was the winning pitcher for the Dodgers.
San Diego Padres defeat LA Dodgers 7-5. Yeah the Dodgers lost, but as Vin Scully so eloquently put it, "Who cares?" The Dodgers found out at 2:32 pm that they were NL West Champs. They went through warm ups, batting practice and the game, then the celebration began. Now this is the first celebration I have seen where the players took to the fans. Russell Martin and Manny Ramirez were among the players spraying fans with champagne and beer. Next for the Dodgers is the final series of the season at San Francsico. As for the postseason, the Dodgers could face either the New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies or Chicago Cubs in the first round.
LA Dodgers defeat San Diego Padres 12-4. The Dodgers sure know how to pile it on. Tuesday they scored six runs in the first inning. Wednesday night they scored six runs in their final offensive inning. Everyone got in on the action even Jeff Kent, Juan Pierre and Rafael Furcal. Yes Furcal made his first appearance with the Dodgers since Cinco de Mayo and was inches away from hitting an extra-base hit down the left field line only for it to go foul. He would strike out on the next pitch but come in defensively for the ninth inning. The Dodger's magic number is one. The Diamondbacks play an afternoon game against the Cardinals, so it might be possible for the Dodgers to clinch the division before they even get to the park.
LA Dodgers defeat San Diego Padres 10-1. It was over in the first inning when Padres starter Wade LeBlanc got his first out when the eighth man Angel Berroa came to the plate. By then the Dodgers had already scored five runs. Dodger's starter Chad Billingsley came to bat after that with a squeeze play for the second out and the sixth run. While Billingsley had a somewhat shaky performance, he only gave up one run. Meanwhile the Padres managed to get a hit in every inning but just couldn't string together the hits. It's much like it has been all season for them. With the Diamondbacks losing 7-4 to the Cardinals, the Dodgers magic number is down to three.
LA Angels defeat NY Yankees 4-2. Andy Pettite had not notched a win since August 20. Wednesday afternoon would be no different. With the bases loaded in the fifth inning, Pettite was one strike away from getting out of the jam. Unfortunately that last strike was a two-run double by Robb Quinlan which also plated Vladimir Guerrero on a Xavier Nady error. Francisco Rodriguez got his 56th save, now needing one more to tie Bobby Thigpen. 74 minutes after Rodriguez threw his last strike the Seattle Mariners defeated the Texas Rangers 8-7 which sent the Angels players streaming out onto the field in front of the 5,000 faithful who stuck around to witness the Angels clinch their fourth AL West title in five years. This is the earliest in the history of the AL West that the division has been clinched. Now for the Angels: playoff positioning.
LA Dodgers defeat San Diego Padres 6-2. Andre Ethier keeps on feasting on those fastballs. In the eighth inning with the Dodgers down 2-1 and Russell Martin on second, Ethier drove a ball out to left field for a game-tying triple. Then with the bases loaded in the ninth inning and the Dodgers leading 3-2, he hit a bases-clearing double that was barely fair down the right field line to give the Dodgers a 6-2 lead. Dodger's starter Hiroki Kuroda was shaky in this outing but managed to give up only two runs on nine hits and two intentional walks. Ethier helped Kuroda's cause by throwing Adrian Gonzalez out at the plate on a Chase Headley RBI double in the third inning. What doesn't Ethier do? With the Diamondbacks losing the Dodger's magic number is down to 16.
San Diego Padres defeat LA Dodgers 4-0. It had to happen at some point. After winning eight straight games, the Dodgers go down to San Diego to be dominated by my countryman Cha Seug Baek in his first win at Petco Park. The only ray of light for the Dodgers was NL co-player of the week Andre Ethier who had a single and two doubles in the Dodger's four-hit effort. Blake DeWitt was the only other Dodger to get a hit. Greg Maddux meanwhile did not look good even showing some frustration in the sixth inning with home plate umpire Angel Hernandez. Fortunate for the Dodgers was the fact that Tim Lincecum dominated the Arizona Diamondbacks shutting them out for eight innings up in San Francisco. The Dodger's magic number is 18.
LA Dodgers defeat San Diego Padres 6-4. The Dodgers sweep the Padres and are on a five game winning streak heading into a weekend showdown against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Nothing was more jaw-dropping than witnessing Angel Berroa hit his first homer since the bronze age. Starter Hiroki Kuroda wasn't quite so dominant as he had been at home giving up four runs on ten hits and a walk in 5 1/3 innings. But the Dodgers capitalized on first-time starter Wade LeBlanc in his four innings of work that had him all over the plate except for the strike zone and a breaking ball that seemed to hang over the plate.
LA Dodgers defeat San Diego Padres 8-4. Well the Dodgers figured out how to get hot down the stretch: keep Jeff Kent away. Since he left the clubhouse, the Dodgers have won every game handily. Listening to the game while stuck at work, the description of Clayton Kershaw's pitches did him no justice. Those pitches were outright filthy. Meanwhile the offense exploited all of the Padre's weaknesses. Andre Ethier was a double short of the cycle, and Manny Ramirez drove in three runs in the first three innings while getting his 30th home run of the season. This Jeckell-Hyde personality of the team has turned my feelings toward them Jeckell-Hyde.
Tampa Bay Rays defeat LA Angels 6-4. It seemed conceivable at the beginning of the season that the Angels would be fighting for the best record in baseball with a team from the AL East in August. The inconceivable part of this is the team they are fighting with is the Tampa Bay Rays. The Angels went into St. Petersburg trying to withstand the Rays who had swept the series back in May at Tropicana Field and have won four of six in total from the Angels. Angel's starter Jon Garland giving up five runs in three innings is not the way to win in this sort of situation. Although the Angels had plenty of chances down the stretch to take the lead, the Rays' bullpen made the perfect pitches when needed. Now both teams will wait and see what happens with Tropical Storm Fay (not Fay Vincent) to see if they can play the next couple of games.
Boston Celtics defeat LA Lakers 97-91. Objectively speaking, the Lakers are pathetic and pitiful. The 21-point lead they had at the end of the first quarter was the largest in NBA Finals history. They led by 20 points in the third quarter. Then they choked like they were sucking on a 13" dick. In the third quarter they took everything good they did in the first half and flushed it down the toilet. To put it historically, it's the largest second-half deficit ever overcome in the Finals. I predicted the trophy was going to be hoisted this Sunday, but it looks like I predicted the wrong team.
LA Angels defeat Tampa Bay Rays 4-2. Backed by homers by Gary Matthews Jr and Vladimir Guerrero and a timely two-run single by Maicer Izturis, John Lackey effectively shut down the Tampa Bay Rays giving up two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts. For the Rays, Scott Kazmir who had an ERA of 1.4 coming into the game gave up only six hits with ten strikeouts. But those three runs he gave up was too much to overcome.
LA Lakers defeat Boston Celtics 87-81. What an ugly game. Pau Gasol was Ga-soft again. Lamar Odom sat on the bench with foul trouble most of the game. So leave it up to Sasha Vujacic to take up the slack. With 20 points he was the only Laker not named Kobe Bryant to score double-digits. The Lakers were more aggressive as perfectly shown by Jordan Farmar in the second quarter. After getting pushed by 6'11" PJ Brown going after a rebound, 6'2" Farmar got into Brown's face. The Lakers defense also did a good job holding Paul Pierce to only six points. MVP of game two Leon Powe had only one point, and although Kevin Garnett got 13 points he yet again retreated to the perimeter. The Lakers now trail the Celtics two games to one.
LA Angels defeat Toronto Blue Jays 3-1. Angel's start John Lackey pitched a masterful game against the Chicago White Sox in his season debut on the 14th but didn't get the win. So Lackey came out Tuesday night and pitched just as well giving up one run on seven hits in seven innings while the bullpen pulled through to give him his first win. Things got interesting in the ninth inning when Angel's closer Francisco Rodriguez walked three to load the bases and went 3-0 on Alex Rios. Rodriguez got Rios to strike out on the next three pitches to end the game. Angel's shortstop Erick Aybar left the game in the first inning after dislocating his pinky while fielding Alex Rios' grounder. A trip to the DL might be in the future for him.
LA Lakers defeat San Antonio Spurs 106-85. The Lakers played shoddy defense the first half against the shorthanded Spurs. But then again the Spurs did also which explains the tied score at half. In the second half the Lakers absolutely shut down the Spurs and Tony Parker while keeping up their offensive efficiency. If the Lakers win Tuesday against the Sacramento Kings, the Lakers will be the #1 team in the west. And to think in October Kobe's Escape from LA was at fever pitch.
LA Dodgers defeat San Diego Padres 11-1. The Dodgers continue to win against San Diego pitchers not named Peavy. For what seems like the first time this season, the Dodgers were able to consistently string hits together to get more than one run to score in an inning. Padres started Chris Young couldn't get ahead of any hitter, and Derek Lowe did what he does best: the sinker to induce ground outs retiring 20 of his last 21 hitters. Hopefully the Dodgers can get something going from this.
LA Dodgers defeat San Diego Padres 3-2. Dodger second baseman Chin-Lung Hu zinged a liner down the third baseline in the top of the ninth to score in Russell Martin from second base for the go-ahead run. The Dodgers end up taking two of three games from the Padres at Petco, and Jake Peavy denies using pine tar Saturday afternoon.
LA Lakers defeat Dallas Mavericks 112-108. The Lakers broke Lawler's Law by defeating the Mavericks even though the Mavericks got to 100 points first. Lamar Odom has a season high 31 points while Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol got 25 points each. The Lakers join the New Orleans Hornets as the only two teams in the Western Conference to clinch a playoff spot. With six games left to go, their only tough games are at home against the Hornets on the 11th and the San Antonio Spurs on the 13th.
