LA Dodgers defeat San Diego Padres 6-2. Clayton Kershaw completed his Cy Young season with a 21-5 record, 2.28 ERA and 248 strikeouts with his 7 1/3 inning effort in San Diego having at least a share of the lead in each of the triple crown categories.
LAst Night's Action: Clayton Kershaw Wins 21st and Triple Crown Lead, Kemp Still Chasing Triple Crown
LAst Night's Action: Trojans Get Horned
Arizona State defeat Sun Devils defeat USC Trojans 43-22. You could sense this lurking in the shadows for the Trojans. They had a hard time closing out Minnesota and Utah in the first two weeks of the season. While they looked dominant last week, it was against an awful Big East team in Syracuse.
LAst Night's Action: Angels Choke Away October Hopes
Oakland Athletics defeat LA Angels 3-1. There is one word to describe the remaining teams fighting for playoff spots: choke. As bad as the Boston Red Sox have choked in September, it’s not like the Tampa Bay Rays or the Angels have lined right up there to overtake the Sox.
Lessons to Be Learned in Dodgers Win
There were a couple of lessons to be had in the Dodgers’ 8-5 victory over the San Diego Padres: always take outs when they are given to you, and it’s never over until the 27th out is secured.
Loney Continues His Resurgence, Kershaw Wins 17th for Dodgers
Armed with a two-run homer and a double, James Loney’s resurgence continued as he helped the Dodgers defeat the San Diego Padres 4-1.
“James, love it,” Manager Don Mattingly said. “He’s been swinging the bat good there.”
LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Silent in San Diego
San Diego Padres defeat LA Dodgers 3-0. Even Petco Park couldn’t contain Ted Lilly who gave up his third career homer at Petco Park, the place where offense goes to die. It looked like Lilly would record only his second game in his last eight where he didn’t give up a home run. Then the sixth inning came around and blew that to hell.
LAst Night's Action: Kershaw Complete for Dodgers
LA Dodgers defeat San Diego Padres 6-2. Padres’ starter Cory Luebke’s night started to fall apart in the fifth inning. After Jamey Carroll led off the inning with a double, Luebke’s inexperience allowed the Dodgers to break the game open. Clayton Kershaw laid down a bunt along the third base line that was going foul. However before the ball had a chance to cross the line, Luebke picked it up and threw to first. Only the throw was high, and Kershaw was safe on first.
Dodgers Shut Down By Padres Pitching
In his third plate appearance in the seventh inning off of San Diego Padres’ starter Dustin Moseley (W, 1-3), Andre Ethier laced a grounder down the line to first base. The ball bounced sky-high off the glove of a diving Padres’ first baseman Brad Hawpe dribbling mere feet away from Hawpe in foul territory. Hawpe got up, spun around to tried and locate the ball. Once Hawpe finally located the ball the charging Ethier had made it safely to first base.
Dodgers Cough One Up Against Padres
Sometimes art imitates life. If playing the game of baseball can be construed as art, well the Dodgers did a good job of imitating their life in their 5-2 loss to the San Diego Padres.
Dodgers Make Things Interesting, Hang On To Defeat Padres
As chaotic as things have been for the Dodgers, at least on Friday night there were some shining moments to report on from the field. Even another wild fishing trip from closer Jonathan Broxton searching for the third out in the ninth inning couldn’t spoil what the Dodgers accomplished: they flashed some power against a pitching staff with the best ERA in the National League as they defeated the San Diego Padres 3-2.
LAst Night's Action: Ducks' Finn Helps Clinch Playoff Berth
Anaheim Ducks defeat LA Kings 2-1. Thanks to Teemu Selanne’s two goals, the Ducks clinch a spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. And for the very first time both the Ducks and the Kings make the playoffs in the same season. Also another interesting note: with the San Jose Sharks also in the playoffs, California has more playoff teams (3) than Canada (2, Vancouver Canucks; Montreal Canadiens.) Go figure.
LAst Night's Action: Angels, Dodgers End Seasons on Winning Note
LA Angels (80-82) defeat Texas Rangers (90-72) 6-2. Hideki Matsui hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning to give the Angels the lead. Back-to-back RBI singles by Bengie Molina and Julio Borbon tied the game in the fifth inning. Peter Bourjos gave the Angels the lead with a solo homer to lead off the sixth inning, the sixth home run of the season. The Angels finished off the Rangers in the ninth with three runs.
Furcal and Ethier Knock out Latos and Padres
After losing their last six against the San Diego Padres, the last thing anyone expected was for the Dodgers to win. But they did play spoiler knocking Padres wunderkind starter Mat Latos (L, 14-8) out of the game before he could record an out in the sixth inning with a 3-1 victory. Combined with the San Francisco Giants’ 13-0 win over the Chicago Cubs, the Padres now are a ½ game behind the Giants in the NL West.
LAst Night's Action: Angels Rally But Lose in 12
Texas Rangers defeat LA Angels 2-1. Losers of four of their last five games, the Rangers were desperate to get a win. They got the scoring started when Julio Borbon came home on Michael Young’s sacrifice fly ball to left field. That lead would hold until the seventh inning when Mike Napoli led off the bottom of the inning with a home run. The stalemate held until the 12th inning when a passed ball by catcher Jeff Mathis allowed Jeff Francoeur to score from third for the Rangers 2-1 lead.
Dodgers Stauffed by Padres
You kept waiting for the Dodgers to do something to no avail. In the end they played like a team playing out the string in their 3-1 loss to the San Diego Padres.
LAst Night's Action: Angels Shutout, Dodgers Get Shutout
LA Angels leads Texas Rangers 2-0. Ervin Santana (W, 17-9) tossed his fourth complete game and first shutout this season as he surpassed his career high in wins blanking the AL West leading Rangers. Hank Conger got things started for the Angels’ offense in the second inning with a leadoff triple and scored on Kevin Frandsen’s groundout. Hideki Matsui added another run in the fourth inning after leading off with a double, advancing to third on Mike Napoli’s fly ball to right field and Conger’s grounder.
Dodgers Bow Out Shutout Style
By the sixth inning the Dodgers hope for postseason play was officially doused thanks to the San Francisco Giants’ 1-0 win over the Chicago Cubs. The Dodgers decided to pay them back by being shut out by Clayton Richard and the San Diego Padres 6-0 to keep the Padres ½ game behind the Giants in the NL West.
LAst Night's Action: Dodgers, Angels Offense Continue to Mold
San Diego Padres defeat LA Dodgers 2-1. An Aaron Cunningham sacrifice fly in the second inning and an Adrian Gonzalez RBI double in the third marred Clayton Kershaw’s (L, 11-10) outing against the Padres. Padres’ starter Mat Latos (W, 14-5), a day after being scratched from a start against the Dodgers with flu-like symptoms, mowed through the Dodger lineup striking out 10 tying a career-high. Scott Podsednik finally sparked the offense in the sixth inning with a two-out double coming home on Rafael Furcal’s single. The Dodgers had a rally going in the eighth inning thanks to a leadoff double by pinch hitter Jamey Carroll off of reliever Mike Adams, but after Adams got pinch hitter Jay Gibbons to fly out closer Heath Bell (S, 39) came in and struck out Podsednik, walked Furcal and struck out James Loney to end the threat. By the way Kershaw had his second one-two-three first inning of the season, and the Dodgers fall under .500 for the first time since April 29.
LAst Night's Action: Angels Swept By Lowly Orioles
Baltimore Orioles defeat LA Angels 5-4. For the first time since 2003 the Angels were swept by the Baltimore Orioles. Angels’ starter Dan Haren was pitching a shutout until the sixth inning when he gave up a leadoff homer to Nick Markakis. The Orioles would score once more in the sixth on Felix Pie’s single and twice in the seventh. The Angels woke up in the eighth to tie the game at 4-4, but Cesar Izturis walked off with a single that brought in Julio Lugo for the winning run. The Angels will tuck their tails between their legs and head off to Detroit for a three-game series.
Dodgers Meekly Bow to Padres 5-0
Two wins was too much of a good thing for the Dodgers as they got shut out by the San Diego Padres 5-0.
Dodgers Bring Out Bats in 9-0 Shutout Rout of Padres
It appears that the Dodgers really do want to make it to a third consecutive October. Despite a patchwork lineup manager Joe Torre cobbled together thanks to injuries to Russell Martin and Rafael Furcal, the Dodgers got their offense going in their 9-0 win over the San Diego Padres.
Lilly, Dodgers Defeat Padres 2-1
Perhaps it’s the first wave of a solar storm that hit the Earth today that righted the nature of the NL West. Whatever it was the Dodgers will take it any way they can as they beat the San Diego Padres 2-1 and broke their six-game losing streak.
Dodgers Continue to Flail against Padres
The Benny Hill Show theme song that played after the third inning showing home video bloopers seemed like a more appropriate soundtrack for the entire game for the Dodgers. Base running gaffes, throwing errors and their inability to get a runner home doomed the Dodgers in their 10-5 loss to the first place San Diego Padres.
LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Still Can't Score Runs
San Diego Padres defeat LA Dodgers 3-2. After being positive about George Sherrill’s two previous outings, Sherrill (L, 1-2) rained on my optimism in the ninth inning today. With Scott Hairston on second base, Oscar Salazar fought Sherrill through eight pitches which ended up being a single up the middle that brought Hairston home for the walk-off win. The Dodger offense continued to struggle with the only offense coming off of James Loney’s solo homer in the second inning that tied the game 1-1 and a Garret Anderson single that drove Jamey Carroll home in the fifth inning to tie the game 2-2. Dodgers starter Vicente Padilla only went four innings while Mat Latos didn’t sneeze at all on the mound during his five innings. Padres closer Heath Bell (W, 5-0) got the win for his hitless ninth inning.
LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Bats MIA
San Diego Padres defeat LA Dodgers 6-1. On this day, the Dodger pitching couldn’t mask the somnambulant offense. Coming into this game the Dodgers starters had a 0.21 ERA in their last six starts giving up only one earned run in 43 innings. Well that streak had to end at some point with starter Hiroki Kuroda (L, 8-9) giving up three runs, the first runs since Vicente Padilla gave up a homer to Ike Davis of the New York Mets on Friday night. His inexplicable inability to throw a strike in the sixth inning led to his downfall when he gave up two runs to give the Padres the 2-1 lead. After a leadoff to Scott Hairston in the seventh inning, Kuroda was lifted. Hairston eventually scored on his brother Jerry’s double off of Jeff Weaver to give the Padres the 3-1 lead and tagging Kuroda with three earned runs. Jerry Hairston would score Chris Denorfia’s single off of Weaver for the 4-1 lead.
LAst Night's Action: Sick Ethier Lifts Anemic Dodger Offense over Padres
LA Dodgers defeat San Diego Padres 2-0. For six innings the Dodgers offense continued to be anemic. It wasn’t until Andre Ethier, who was pulled from the starting lineup due to illness, pinch hit in the seventh inning with the bases loaded and two outs and grounded a single to left center field to bring in two runs. Thankfully for the Dodgers the starting pitching has been lights out with Chad Billingsley (W, 9-5) continuing to carry the torch with six shutout innings. Hong-Chih Kuo pitched two shutout innings striking out five while Jonathan Broxton got his 20th save by striking out nemesis Matt Stairs to end the game. Former Dodger Jon Garland (L, 9-7) did a good job of matching Billingsley inning for inning, but after the Ethier single he was done.
Four Cosas About the Dodgers 4-1 Victory Over the Padres
Here are the four moments in the Dodgers’ 4-1 win over the San Diego Padres:
LAst Night's Action: Lakers Power Past Suns
LA Lakers defeat Phoenix Suns 124-112. It got a little hairy there for a second for the Lakers as the Phoenix Suns made a push in the third quarter. But Pau Gasol and the Lakers pushed their lead and now have a 2-0 series lead in the Western Conference Finals over the Suns. For the Lakers Gasol had 29 points and nine rebounds, Kobe Bryant scored 21 and a personal playoff record 13 assists, while the “lucky” Lamar Odom scored 17 points and 11 rebounds in the Lakers’ victory.
Dodgers Finally Slip against Padres
Bad pitching by both teams helped drag the game as if this was a Yankees-Red Sox game. At the end of this three hour, forty-eight minute hit-fest it was the Padres who stood on top 10-5. The teams combined for 26 hits and left 22 runners on base.
Anemic Dodgers Lose Series to Padres
With the Dodgers offense being about as consistent as that of a teenaged boy’s face, the Dodgers (81-57) decided to bring the bad offense to the game against the San Diego Padres (61-77) in front of 47,528 fans losing 4-3.
