LA Drops from #3 to #16 on Forbes' List of 'Best Cities for Singles'
As a city known for its beautiful weather and beautiful people, you'd think it would be difficult to name a more ideal city for singles than Los Angeles. However, Forbes.com, actually found 15 other cities that they think are a better fit for bachelors and bachelorettes in their "8th Annual Best Cities for Singles" list.
Trader Joes Commissions Local Wine Company
One of Los Angeles' hidden gems in an industrial part of downtown is the San Antonio Winery, who has been around for some 91 years.
LAst Night's Action: Kings See Red
Red Wings 3, Kings 0 - The best hockey team in the NHL was in Staples Center on Tuesday night. Unfortunately for local fans, the worst team in the NHL calls it home. The Kings lost to Detroit for the 17th time in 18 games. Next up, LA hosts Anaheim, then gets some time off for the all star break. That means plenty of rest, since it's not like the Kings will have many players going.
Lakers: The Passion Bucket Overfloweth
Dude, strange things are afoot in Lakerland. Last night, en route to the Lakers beating the Nuggets 116-99, Kobe Bryant passed the ball. He made shit happen. And then, postgame, with a smile on his face, Kobe spoke in approving terms about his team, citing the fullness of their “passion bucket”. WHO IS THIS MAN?
Bynum Out 8 Weeks With Kobe's Positive Attitude
You can halt production on that purple and gold 2008 NBA Champions afghan you’ve been crocheting so diligently -- Lakers center Andrew Bynum is going to be out for the next 8 weeks. Bynum suffered a dislocated kneecap and a bone bruise courtesy of Lamar Odom’s big ass foot during the Laker’s victory over Memphis on Sunday. The good news is that the injury will not require surgery and the 20 year old big man is expected to recover fully.
LAst Night's Action: Lakers Heating Up
Lakers 112, Pacers 96 - The purple and gold have won six of seven and 12 of their last 15 games. Against Indiana, several players had big nights. All five starters hit double-digits in scoring, including 26 from Kobe Bryant, 23 from Andrew Bynum, and 22 from Derek Fisher. The Pacers are 0-9 against the Lakers in Staples Center.
LAst Night's Action: Ball Hog Scores 20,000
Lakers 95, Knicks 90 - Kobe Bryant had 20,019 points on 15,314 shots (plus 6,184 from the charity stripe) last night. Not bad for a guy under the age of 30 ... The Kobster was actually 14-of-28 for 39 points (plus 11 rebounds and 8 assists), but in the process became the youngest player in NBA history to reach the 20,000 career points mark. Bryant raved about playing in Madison Square Garden and said the Knicks were one of four teams he would be willing to play for outside of the Lakers ... Los Angeles is 8-2 in their last 10 and just 2.5 games behind San Antonio for the top record in the West ... "The Times has learned that Kobe Bryant is now happy and committed to the Lakers forever or until they lose five in a row, whichever comes first."
LAist Interview: The Reverend Bob Levy
Will the real reverend please stand up. The Reverend Bob Levy and his collective of stand-up comics known as the Killers of Comedy (Rev. Bob Levy, Jim Florentine, Sal Governale, Richard Christy, Shuli, Yucko the Clown, Beetlejuice & The Iron Sheik), are coming to the Avalon and even Hollywood will notice. Bob is a regular on "The Howard Stern Show", is a professional comedian, has horrible spelling skills, and lives with in the basemen...
LAst Night's Action: Anaheim Edges Los Angeles
Ducks 4, Kings 3, SO - Southern California's teams are getting to know each other pretty well. After opening the season with two games in London, they now face each other in three of their next six games. Last night in Anaheim the Ducks showed signs of life, but blew a two goal lead in the third period. The eventually beat Los Angeles 2-0 in a shoot-out. Spurs 107, Lakers 92 - The Lakers are...
Happy 90th to the San Antonio Winery
Last weekend we were happy to take part in the Harvest Festival, as part of a year-long 90th Anniversary celebration for the historic San Antonio Winery, a place much loved by LAist. The gracious Riboli family hosted the event, which was held at the winery, which has been in its same location on Lamar Street in East Los Angeles since 1917. There was food provided by the winery's onsite Maddalena restaurant, and wine aplenty...
Guy Hiking with a Guy with a Sword ends up in Hospital
Believe it or not but there's not a lot of hiking happening with many of us here at LAist. Sure there's Zach and a few other show-offs, but even they could tell you that if you start lacing up your hiking boots and notice someone stretching with a freaking sword, things will probably not end well.
LAst Night's Action: Local Teams Beaten, Bruised
Phillies 15, Dodgers 3 - After loosing 10,001 games, Philadelphia took out 124 years of cheesesteak-fueled frustration on the Dodgers. Starting pitcher J.D. Durbin had three of the team's 26 hits one of 15 Phillie runs. All this from a guy who had never reached base before in his life. Heck, he'd never won a game in his life, either. Check both off his to-do list. The Dodgers actually had a respectable 14 hits (yup,...
LAst Night's Action: 10,001 Reasons LA Is Better Than Philly
Dodgers 10, Phillies 3 - Imagine how good the Dodgers would be if Jason Schmidt were healthy. On Monday it was another All Star, Brad Penny, who notched his 11th win of the season and gave the Blue Crew their 5th in a row. Jeff Kent and Matt Kemp each contributed a three-run shot. The Phillies trailed by as many as nine en-route to their MLB leading 10,001st franchise loss. Beckham Watch - There's drama...
Name The NBA Champion, Win Free Stuff
Will Cleveland complete a giant turnaround on the shoulders of LeBron James? Will San Antonio continue their NBA legacy with another championship? We don't have a stinkin' clue, but if you make the best prediction LAist will give you a box of 2006-2007 Topps Full Court Basketball Cards. The box contains 108 cards, including two relic cards and one that's been autographed by two different NBA stars. If you haven't heard, it seems like everybody...
Rocketing Towards a First-Round Exit
Last night’s nationally televised game between the Clippers and the Rockets (a five-point win for Houston) demonstrated the kind of progress that the Clips have made over the last month, and why the team will hold on to the eighth spot with their eleven remaining games. It also illustrated the reasons why the Clips have fallen far short of the lofty expectations set forth for them this year. Both teams displayed a level of execution...
The CW (Clipper Weekly): Home Stretch
Current Record: 34-36, 3rd Pacific, 8th West Last Week: While the LA hoops world has been focused on the Bruins’ repeat run to the Final Four and Kobe’s insane scoring binge, the Clippers have quietly found their groove at the best possible time. Over the last two weeks since the last CW, the Clips finished their pivotal road-trip 3-3, which may not seem terribly remarkable, but considering the team’s road woes throughout the season, it...
LAst Night's Action: Chicago Goes Down
Clipper 103, Bulls 89 - The struggling Clippers defeated a strong Chicago squad despite missing Sam Cassell due to injury. Cuttino Mobley led the way with 25, followed by Corey Maggette with 22. Elton Brand had 21 and 12 rebounds. Los Angeles is essentially even with Golden State for the eighth and final spot in the Western Conference playoffs. Three teams (Dallas, Pheonix, and San Antonio) are already in. Dodgers - LAist discovers that beer...
LAst Night's Action: Clippers Spurned
Spurs 93, Clipper 84 - With all the talk about the winning streak from that team in Texas, it's easy to get confused. That's because the Mav's 17 game streak is over, but San Antonio is on their own run of 13. Los Angeles was the latest victim, and in convincing fashion. The Spurs had 18 points from the charity stripe compared to just 3 for the Clippers, who also gave up 22 points off...
San Antonio Winery Celebrates 90th Anniversary with Wine & Tamales
A few miles northeast of City Hall, tucked in an triangle bordered by the 110, the 5 and the 101 freeways is one of Los Angeles' secret gems, the San Antonio Winery. Instead of Italian immigrants, warehouses and trucking lots now dominate this unprepossessing little slice of industrial Los Angeles. And in the midst of it the San Antonio Winery stands as the last remnant of a little known and largely forgotten aspect of Los...
American Idol: Opening the Wrong Doors in San Antonio
San Antonio was the last stop on the American Idol audition tour last night, and LAist is glad that this phase of the show is over – and the cattiness of the Hollywood auditions begins next week. After awhile, all the weirdos start to blend together -- like Bryan who screamed “Rebel Yell” to start the show. Although our ears were blistering, we paid more attention to his ugly camouflage pants and Ryan Seacrest's...
TV Junkie: House Gets in the Gypsies' Faces
Crap - I have no time to get snarky with you today.
American Idol - Wretched, Retching On All Fours, Los Angeles I’m Yours
We may not have a football team, but we have American Idol. Last night, Los Angeles welcomed home its own. AI in LA ! Starring: Paula’s cleavage! Olivia Newton Sandy Xanadu John! Mr. Jackson’s snazzy pink and white striped shirt! And charmer extraordinaire, Simon “I’m not being rude, but…” Cowell! This epidode opened on an epileptic panther-man with megalomaniacal ambitions and wild assertions, who got all Cold Hearted Snake on the stairs while making...
LAst Night's Action: Where Art Thou, Kobeo?
Knicks 99, Lakers 94 - The Lakers got through the first half of the season without losing three games in a row, but it finally happened at Madison Square Garden. Kobe Bryant missed the game on a suspension for elbowing San Antonio's Manu Ginobili on Sunday. The elbow didn't draw a foul in the game, but the league responded strongly. Since the Lakers were already in New York, just down the street from the NBA's...
Big Stage, No Star
When the curtains come up near Broadway for the Lakers and New York Knicks tonight, the role of Kobe Bryant will be played by Maurice Evans. Nobody likes to pay Broadway ticket prices to see the understudy, but the NBA has suspended Kobe for tonight’s game in New York because of his “intentional” elbowing of Manu Ginobli of the San Antonio Spurs with 2.7 seconds left in Sunday’s game. Watch the video for yourself --...
LAst Night's Action: The ED! Edition
Ducks 4, Stars 1 - After taking more than a week off, the Ducks returned to the ice looking HEALED! Three key players were back after suffering from injuries before the All Star break. The fresh bodies helped Anaheim recover from their recent skid and play more like their impressive season start. Spurs 96, Lakers 94, OT - The Lakers led most of the game, but not when it counted the most. Tied at 80...
Bad News Bear Makes Good
No worries for all you out of work, over-the-hill actors out there -- there is hope. Consider Jackie Earle Haley, former child star and recent pizza delivery man. Haley is a surprise Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Ronnie McGorvey in the drama Little Children.
The Texas Two-Step
The Lakers go up against the best franchise of the last decade in San Antonio, win one of the most exciting and best-played games of their season last night — despite 2/5ths of the starting lineup watching from home — and what is the Lakers reward?
LAst Night's Action: Lakers Drop Balls, Cake. Still Win.
Lakers 100, Spurs 96 - The Lakers opened a three game road trip by surviving a late San Antonio rally. Both teams suffered from ball control issues. The Lakers dropped the rock 17 times (7 by Kobe), and the home team had 19 turnovers resulting in 25 points. Before the game, Kobe threw a lot of cliches at the press about getting back to basics. While the turnovers didn't live up to the expectations,...
