Ring-A-Ling: Salvation Army Arms Red Kettles With Credit Card Readers
The ringing will soon begin, and no, we're not talking about sleigh bells (yet). The jingle-jangle we're referring to belongs to a small red bell, a bell that signals shoppers to donate some of their gift-giving funds to charity. The Salvation Army has ramped up its fundraising efforts this year, adding a special new device to their iconic Red Kettles.
Father Dollar Bill Gives Out Benjamins on Skid Row
Reverend Maurice Chase, aka Father Dollar Bill, was at it again this Thanksgiving, handing out $15,000 in cash yesterday to eagerly awaiting homeless in what has become an annual tradition. Singles, twenties and a few benjamins were handed out to those in need at the Salvation Army Mission at 5th and Sanford in downtown LA. KTLA reports that the money Father Chase donates comes from Mrs. Bob Hope, Mrs. Frank Sinatra, Bob Newhard, Eli Broad, Vin Scully and many others. His stated goal, despite criticism, is simply to make sure skid row residents know they are not invisible.

Record stores may have folded, but fans of vinyl soldier on. Where to get their fix? Well, there's Amoeba, there are swap meets, there are Sing Along With Mitch albums laguishing at the Salvation Army. And this week, one vinyl fan took her for-sale collection virtual with Hollywoodland Records, a blog-slash-store. Prices range from $1 - $50, but most are less than $10. It's not a bigtime operation; in fact, you've got to live nearby to play. Sales are made by appointment/pickup only, no mail order.
