Ashore and expected to be reunited with her family in a few days, 16-year-old sailor Abby Sunderland has talked to the press regarding her thwarted attempt to circumnavigate the globe solo. Sunderland told the AP that comparisons of her to other teens are unfair: "I think that a lot of people are judging me by the standards they have for their teens and other teens that they know … and thinking 'she's exactly like them...They don't understand that I've sailed my whole life and I do know what I'm doing out there," (via LA Now). And that spirit of exploration still has the Thousand Oaks teen enthralled: "I don't know when or how I will, but I'm pretty sure I will one day sail around the world." more ›

That's a 28,000 mile trip for the Thousand Oaks native who saved up $6,000 for his 36-foot Intrepid sailboat. Although he has beaten records, a younger sailor is already trying to beat him with a faster boat, but Sunderland shrugs it off knowing someday his record will be beat. Next up? "I'm hoping to set off on my next adventure soon — Mt. Everest or down to the Arctic Circle," Sunderland said. KCET's SoCal Connected has been following him with web cam interviews throughout the late spring. more ›
